Abigail Martland

Biography Abigail graduated from the University of Chester with an upper second-class honours law degree (LLB) in 2018. After the completion of her degree, Abigail joined the employment and discrimination team at Stephensons in August 2018 as a graduate paralegal. Abigail secured the role of case manager in September 2021 and currently manages a varied case load of both civil and employment discrimination claims brought on behalf of claimants pursuant to the Equality Act 2010. Abigail has since graduated as a Fellow of CILEx (Chartered Legal Executive) in November 2022, following the successful completion of an apprenticeship with the firm.

Adam Smith

Biography Adam is a graduate paralegal in the regulatory department, and specialises in regulatory defence, professional discipline and road traffic offences. Adam joined Stephensons in August 2023, after graduating from the University of Sheffield with an upper second class (2.1) honours Law (EU and International) degree in July 2023, with a year at Utrecht University, the Netherlands, achieving a first-class grade in June 2022. Adam assists the partners and solicitors within the regulatory department specialising in numerous areas including: road transport regulation and operator licencing; road traffic offences; customs and excise; firearms licencing; health and safety investigations; trading standards investigations and prosecutions; and data protection and litigation.

Alison Fanning

Biography Alison joined the conveyancing team at Stephensons in July 2017 as a paralegal after having served 16 years in residential conveyancing at a previous law firm. Alison currently works alongside case manager, Rebecca Fletcher, assisting mainly in sale transactions. Alison has a considerable amount of experience having spent her working life in the legal profession and having progressed through the ranks to her current role. She is supervised by Natalie Bradley.

Amy Dutton

Biography Amy is a solicitor in the Court of Protection and community care department. Amy commenced her career at Stephensons in June 2011 whilst studying her law degree at Edge Hill University. Amy successfully completed three summer student placements at Stephensons whilst completing her studies working in both the crime and civil liberties departments. She then graduated with an upper second class honours degree in 2014 and joined the regulatory department shortly after in May 2014 as a graduate paralegal. Whilst in this role, Amy studied her Legal Practice Course part-time at Manchester Metropolitan University which she completed in June 2016, achieving a distinction. Amy was subsequently offered a training contract at Stephensons which she commenced in September 2017. Amy then completed her training contract having undertaken seats in the regulatory, probate, and employment and discrimination department, prior to qualifying as a solicitor in September 2019. Amy has a particular interest and experience in representing vulnerable children and adults with physical disabilities and mental health conditions. Amy frequently represents clients lacking capacity and is experienced in section 21A appeals against Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS). Amy is Westlaw certified having completed both her basic and advanced legal research training. Outside of work, Amy enjoys baking and spending time with her dog, Betsy. I worked with Amy Dutton on a variety of CoP cases, specifically in relation to s21a challenge for persons under DoLS. Amy was always quick and helpful in her responses, and was always willing to speak with me about cases before initialising challenges, helping me clarify statements and ensure that challenges were correctly filed. Amy went out of her way to ensure my clients and service users views and wishes were understood and heard by the courts and by social services. Biography Having obtained an LLB Hons from the University of Liverpool, Amy qualified as a solicitor in 2010. Since qualification, Amy has practised exclusively in family law at two North West high street firms and has strong links with the Liverpool and Manchester court circuits. Amy has undertaken all aspects of family law during her career to date and now specialises in child care work. Amy has a vast amount of experience in advising parents in cases where social services and the local authority has become involved with their family, whether at a pre-proceedings stage or court proceedings. Amy has been involved in a wide and varied range of cases including those with issues of neglect, drug and alcohol issues, mental health issues, learning difficulties or disabilities, sexual abuse, non-accidental injuries and many others. Amy has experience in representing children in care proceedings via their children's guardian and successfully obtained her Law Society Children Panel Accreditation in February 2020. Amy conducts her own advocacy and has appeared in courts across the North West.
