Adhi Sharma - President

Dr. Sharma is board certified in toxicology and emergency medicine. He has been the clinical quarterback of Mount Sinai South Nassau's response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Under his guidance, the hospital surged capacity to 500 beds as it cared for more than 1,700 COVID-19 patients over the course of the pandemic. Dr. Sharma obtained his medical degree from New York Medical College in Valhalla, NY, and completed his emergency medicine residency at Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Jacobi/Montefiore Medical Center. He also completed a fellowship in medical toxicology at NYU/Bellevue Medical Center. He holds a Masters in Health Care Administration at George Washington University. Dr. Sharma is an associate professor of emergency medicine at the Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine. He is a co-author of journal articles published in the Journal of Emergency Medicine, Academy of Emergency Medicine and Emergency Medicine Clinics of North America. Dr. Sharma has also authored chapters published in clinical textbooks, including Rosen's Textbook of Emergency Medicine; 5-Minute Pediatric Emergency Medicine Consult, and Goldfrank's Toxicologic Emergencies. Prior to working at Mount Sinai South Nassau, Dr. Sharma served as the chair of emergency medicine at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip.

Alan Wong

Dr. Wong joins us from Catholic Health, where he served in multiple leadership roles at Mercy Medical Center in Rockville Centre, NY, including Vice President for Patient Safety and Chief Quality Officer, Chair of Internal Medicine and Chief of Pulmonary and Critical Care. During his time at there, he was responsible for patient quality and safety issues, risk management, and hospital accreditation. Dr. Wong also co-chaired the performance improvement committee and the patient experience committee, as well as many other clinical and quality initiatives. As Chief Medical Officer, he is responsible for the administration of, and liaison with, all medical staff throughout the hospital, employed and attending. A long-time Nassau County resident, Dr. Wong attended medical school at New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he obtained both his MBA and DO degrees, and then completed his internal medicine residency and Pulmonary and Critical Care fellowship at the then-Winthrop-University Hospital.

Alexander Hatsis

She oversees all aspects of Internal Audit and Corporate Compliance for the Hospital, Outpatient Departments and Captive PCs. Ms. Amato is a Certified Public Accountant with a bachelor's degree in accounting from Adelphi University and Master of Business Administration from Molloy College. She received both her Certification in Healthcare Compliance (CHC) and Certification in Healthcare Privacy Compliance (CHPC) from the Healthcare Compliance Association (HCCA). Ms. Amato received her CPC (Certified Professional Coder) from the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) and served on the Board of the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) Metro NY Chapter where she chaired the Compliance and Internal Audit Committee for 10 years. Athanasios Smyrlis

Athanasios Smyrlis, MD, FACC Interventional and Clinical Cardiology Board-certified in cardiology, interventional cardiology, echocardiography, nuclear cardiology and internal medicine, and specializing in invasive cardiology, Dr. Smyrlis was fellowship-trained in interventional cardiology at Winthrop University Hospital (SUNY, Stony Brook, N.Y.). He completed cardiovascular disease training at the Western CT Health Network (Yale School of Medicine, CT) where he served as Chair of the hospital's Quality Improvement Committee. He received advanced CHF and heart transplant training at Yale New Haven Hospital. Dr. Smyrlis earned his medical degree from the University of Ioannina Medical School, Greece, where he ranked in the top one percent of his class. He completed his internal medicine residency at the Albert Einstein Medical Center, Philadelphia, PA. Charles E. Thompson III

Dr. Charles Thompson has practiced Bariatric Surgery since 2013 and joined Mount Sinai as a Bariatric Surgeon in 2022. After completing his undergraduate studies at Morehouse College, Dr. Thompson earned his medical degree from Howard University. He then completed his internship and residency in General Surgery at Howard, where he served as Chief Resident during his final year. To finish his training, Dr. Thompson moved to Cleveland Clinic Florida for his fellowship in Bariatrics & Minimally Invasive Surgery. With his board certification by the American Board of Surgery, Dr. Thompson's interests include treatment of obesity and studying the disparity in health outcomes in the bariatric community. In addition to his clinical role, Dr. Thompson is part of the core faculty of the Mount Sinai South Nassau General Surgery Residency Program. Dana Sanneman

Jason Freeman

A specialist in both coronary and peripheral interventional procedures, Dr. Freeman has been active in research on stenting in acute myocardial infarction as well as peripheral arterial interventions. A graduate of New York Medical College, Dr. Freeman has served as an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the NYU School of Medicine. Prior to coming to Mount Sinai South Nassau, Dr. Freeman also served as Director of North Shore University Hospital's (NSUH) cardiac care unit and medical Director of its cardiology ACLS training program. Mr. Pohlman also coordinates all relationships with auditors, third-party reimbursement agents, managed care companies, investment bankers, and the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York. Mr. Pohlman joins Mount Sinai South Nassau after nearly two decades at Catholic Health Services of Long Island (CHS), where he provided steady leadership and sound economic and financial insight. His most recent role was Chief Operating Officer for CHS's St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown. Previously, he had served as St. Catherine's Vice President of Finance and Administration. During his tenure, Mr. Pohlman also served as CHS's Regional Vice President of Finance, coordinating the financial operations of three acute care hospitals and two skilled nursing facilities in Suffolk County. Josh Kugler

Vice President, Physician Services Dr. Kugler began his role at Mount Sinai South Nassau (MSSN) in 2001 as an Emergency Medicine physician. He was appointed Clinical Chair for the Department of Emergency Medicine in 2004. From 2007 to 2009, Dr. Kugler served as the Chief Medical Officer, resuming his role as Clinical Chair thereafter until 2020, at which point he maintained a close relationship with us working as a liaison for the Mount Sinai Network team. We are pleased to have Dr. Kugler return to our administrative team as we continue to grow our health care delivery system here at MSSN. Dr. Kugler obtained his bachelor's degree at Duke University, his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and a master's in healthcare management from Harvard University. Dr. Kugler's clinical training includes an internship in General Surgery (National Naval Medical Center-Bethesda) and an Emergency Medicine Residency (NYU-North Shore University), where he was a Chief Resident. Dr. Austin brings over 20 years of clinical and management experience. She is responsible for establishing processes and systems that ensure the provision of outstanding patient services across all aspects of the oncology service line, clinical research, outpatient infusion, and genetic counseling. She is responsible for leading and developing strategies for the service line and serves in a dyad partnership with physicians and department leaders in the development of effective business plans for expanding services. Lawrence Kanner

Dr. Kanner oversees and directs electrophysiology operations in Mount Sinai South Nassau's state-of-the-art Electrophysiology Lab. He cares for patients with a variety of cardiac rhythm disorders and congestive heart failure, with medications, pacemakers, defibrillators, and the latest in advanced cardiac ablation techniques. He received his bachelor's degree from Harvard University and medical degree from the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at SUNY Buffalo. He completed his medical residency and specialty training in cardiovascular disease at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset and thereafter received advanced fellowship training in clinical cardiac electrophysiology at the renowned Lahey Clinic Medical Center in Massachusetts. Before joining Mount Sinai South Nassau, Dr. Kanner served as an attending physician in the section of cardiac electrophysiology at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset. Michael R. Sood
