Dr Angus Bain

Angus heads the Ultrafast Laser Spectroscopy Laboratory within the AMOPP group and is a Reader in Physics. His work concentrates on the development of novel time-resolved polarised laser techniques and nonlinear optics. Current work includes studies into fluorescence resonance energy transfer with Cancer Research UK, the development of high two-photon cross-section molecular probes and single molecule spectroscopy (CNRS Rennes). He has also has pioneered measurements of liquid crystal dynamics.

Dr Bill O'Neill

Having completed an advanced fellowship in September 2003 at Liverpool University and established a £5M EPSRC Innovative Manufacturing Research Centre in 2002, Bill was appointed to a lectureship in production processes within the Institute for Manufacturing in Cambridge University Engineering Department in 2003. He has written over 70 scientific papers on the subject of lasermatter interactions, optical engineering and manufacturing process technologies, he is a member of a number of government and industrial advisory boards, and is a non-executive director of Advanced Laser Solutions Ltd.

Dr Chin-Pang Liu

Dr Chin-Pang Liu is an associate professor in the UCL Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering. He obtained both his BEng degree and PhD from UCL, and has over 20 years of experience in photonic devices, microwave and MIMO over fibre systems. His current research interests include photonic sampling of broadband microwave signal using an optical comb generator.

Dr Michael Crisp

Dr Michael Crisp is a Lecturer in Photonic and RF Systems at Cambridge University. He completed both his MEng and PhD on Radio over Fibre Systems at Cambridge. His current research interests include radio over fibre systems, ultra low power RF devices and RFID. He is an inventor on a number of patents which are currently being commercially exploited, and is a founder of PervasID.

Kam Lundin

Kam Lundin is the Cambridge Centre Administrator, providing local support to Centre Directors at Cambridge and deals with site-specific administration such as taught course and elective registration, exam entry and viva arrangement.

Prof Alwyn Seeds

Job Titles:
  • Head of the Photonics Group at UCL
Prof Alwyn Seeds FREng, FIEEE, is Head of the Photonics Group at UCL. His key technical innovations have been in microwave photonics and he is the author of some 250 papers in this research area, inventor on some 14 patents and has been Conference Chair/Programme Chair for many international photonics conferences. Among his leadership roles he is the Vice-President for Technical Affairs of the IEEE Lasers and Electro-optics Society, the lead society for photonics within the IEEE. He is the founder/co-founder of three technology companies including Zinwave.

Prof Cyril Renaud

Prof Cyril Renaud is a lecturer at UCL, leading research on components and systems for THz photonics, where he is the holder of the record for the highest power extracted from a photodetector at 1 THz. He has also worked and studied within some of the most prestigious institutions involved in Photonics in Europe (Institut d'Optique, Ecole Normale Superieur Optoelectronics Research Centre). He is an inventor on 3 patents in photonics.

Prof Daping Chu

Prof Daping Chu has a Doctorate in Physics and is currently the Director of Centre for Photonic Devices and Sensors and the Director of the CAPE at Cambridge. Daping is a CDT Director of Research, a Fellow and Director of Studies in Selwyn College, and holds Nanjing Chair of Technology and Innovation at Cambridge and a number of professorships in China.

Prof Rachel Oliver

Rachel is Director of the Cambridge Centre for Gallium Nitride. She leads research projects across the full range of the Centre's activities, and her personal passion is understanding how the small scale structure of nitride materials effects the performance and properties of devices. She uses expertise in microscopy and materials growth to lead the development of new nanoscale nitride structures which will provide new functionality to the devices of the future.

Prof Richard Penty

Prof Richard Penty studied for his doctoral research in the Cambridge University on optical fibre devices for signal processing applications, receiving his PhD in 1989. Having been a Professor at the University of Bristol he returned to Cambridge in 2001. His research interests include high-speed optical communications systems, high brightness lasers, optical amplifiers, high speed and high power semiconductor lasers and radio over fibre and LAN systems. He has authored over 400 refereed journal and conference papers, is Editor-in-Chief of IET Optoelectronics, co-founder of Zinwave and Master of Sidney Sussex College.

Vicki McGrath
