THE CAPE ALOE MOVEMENT

The Cape Aloe Movement is a collective initiative formed by the traditional tappers, public sector and industry to develop the biodiversity economy of the aloe industry in the Cape region of South Africa. Inspired by the ideals of the Nagoya Protocol, The Cape Aloe Movement promotes the sustainable utilization of the indigenous Aloe ferox plant in a manner that is fair and equitable to the indigenous traditional tappers as well as the broader stakeholders in the aloe industry. This is achieved by combining the herbal heritage of the Aloe and the centuries old tradition of aloe tapping, by the indigenous rural entrepreneurs, into a unique value proposition in the market. Sustainable industry growth based on this unique value proposition, as well as sound commercial principles, encourage incentive driven compliance to the domestic regulatory framework required by the Nagoya Protocol.
