Andrew Crompton

Andrew has over 35 years' experience in the public/private residential sector in Wales. Starting his early career with the Oldway Property Corporation in Merthyr Tydfil he joined SHAW Housing Association (now Linc Housing Association, Cardiff) where he was Land and Property Acquisition Surveyor. He later joined Ideal Homes Wales Ltd as Land Manager, becoming Land Director when they were acquired by Persimmon PLC in 1996. Following the successful growth of Persimmon, including the acquisition of Beazer & Westbury, Andrew was appointed Managing Director of Charles Church Wales (a new regional operating company within the Persimmon Group) with an annual turnover of £120 million. In 2006 he was elected as Regional Chairman for The Home Builders Federation, a post he held for over 3 years, actively supporting the industry and liaising with central and local government bodies on emerging policy issues. Since leaving Persimmon as Land and Planning Director in 2015 he established his own development consultancy business and focuses primarily on newbuild residential and mixed use schemes.

Chad Patel - CFO, Secretary

Chad has over 40 years' experience in the finance and treasury management disciplines in the professional, private and quasi-public sector. He has worked in accountancy firms, international manufacturing companies and housing organisations. Prior to joining Tirion, Chad was the Managing Director and Group Finance Director for Hendre, a major housing association in South Wales. Whilst at Hendre, Chad was instrumental in driving financial efficiency and treasury management to deliver the funding needed for non-grant aided developments of housing and care facilities. He also initiated and implemented a new corporate structure; initiated and completed the acquisition of new businesses and lead internal reorganization. Chad joined Tirion as a consultant in 2013 and became the Group Finance Director in 2019 on a part-time basis and became full-time in 2021. Outside the employment/consultancy positions, Chad has served as the Treasurer of Welsh Council for Voluntary Organisations (WCVA) an umbrella body for the charitable sector in Wales; Finance Director for Tennis Wales, the national governing body for tennis in Wales.

David Ward - CEO

David has over 30 years' public and private sector-built environment experience and has worked in local/central government and private consultancy. Between 2000 and 2002 David was Head of the Urban Unit in Welsh Government where he was responsible for developing policy and initiatives to support the regeneration of communities in Wales. In 2002 David joined Newport Unlimited, Wales' only Urban Regeneration Company as Director of Planning and Strategy responsible for the delivery of a £500m regeneration programme. In 2006 David joined Arup where he established Wales' largest multi-disciplinary urban development consultancy team. David has worked extensively in the UK, Scandinavia, Russia and Eastern Europe where he was Project Director for a wide range of major urban and regional development projects. In 2011 David played a pivotal role in the formation of the Tirion Group, which was established to pursue new financing models for residential led regeneration with a focus on affordable housing. David took up the part-time role of CEO in June 2012 and became full-time in 2016.

Gayna Jones

Chair of the Design Commission for Wales Gayna is a graduate of Aberystwyth University, with private, public and voluntary sector experience throughout her career. Starting in human resources in a Unilever company, she went on to work for the voluntary sector, finally settling into a career in housing. After a decade as Chief Executive of a Housing Association, she established her own Housing Consultancy. Gayna has also served as a local authority councillor, was the first independent member appointed by Welsh Government to the Regulatory Board for Wales. Gayna is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Housing (FCIH) She currently chairs our Estates and Communities Committee.

John Lovell

John is our Technical Director and Chairs Tirion's Development Companies. He is responsible for the design and delivery of our construction sites and incubating new projects. He was a founding member of Tirion. During his 50 years experience in the industry, as a Director of Arup for 25 years, leading the design and project management of some of the world's most iconic buildings. He led Arup's European Building Sector for 8 years and it's Wales division for 20 years. Developments created and delivered in Wales include - Wales Millenium Centre, The Senedd, Cardiff City Football stadium, and many other significant national projects. He retired from Arup in 2012 to develop his own portfolio of projects and assist with the setting up of Tirion, including solutions for residential development on technically challenging brownfield sites. His current priorities include delivery of zero carbon homes.

Jon Matthews

Jon has over 29 years of experience in the residential sector and has gained a vast and varied experience in residential development. Jon started his career with Lovell Partnerships Ltd as a sponsored student. Upon graduating (1994) with a degree in Building Technology and Management, he started his career with Lovell working in Pre-Construction of affordable housing projects, Estate Regeneration Projects and open market housing. Within three years, he was appointed into a senior managing role in South Wales. In 1999, he joined Bovis Homes South Wales and South West of England Land team and after a short time was appointed Area Land Director. After leaving Bovis Homes, Jon joined Redrow Homes and regional house builder Redcliffe Homes working in their respective Land Teams. In 2007, he joined King Sturge LLP to set up a new Residential Department in their Cardiff Office and was appointed Partner in 2008. Jon returned to Lovell Partnerships, after the restructure at King Sturge LLP. He worked for the Leadbitter Group, Bellerphon Partnerships and Greenwich Communities. During this time, Jon's prime focus was seeking new land led opportunities with partners involved in affordable housing, elderly care and open market housing. In 2016, Jon started his own Consultancy business. During his work with client United Welsh Housing Associations, he represented clients on the sale of land, acquired land for development and provided advice on potential residential developments. In November 2018, joined Tirion as a Consultant working on new opportunities and existing projects.

Ken Haines

Ken operates as an objective team member with both internal and outsider viewpoint, mindful of strategic factors and monitoring performance of Tirion in all areas of its growth, organisation and operation. He is a reminder when needed of what we are all "here to do". He gained extensive experience in the built environment sector with responsibility for technical evaluation, design and project management for development companies operating in Midlands, Southern England and South Wales. Posts held included Quantity Surveyor, Design and Construction Manager. Founder, Managing Director and later Chairman of a PLC Construction and Development Group with sales exceeding £80m and concluded by successful negotiation of strategic sale to Vinci PLC. He is experienced in formation and management of growth orientated teams and the required financials to achieve success. He has been responsible for many significant Public, commercial and residential developments in the Capital and throughout South Wales. He operates his own investment company of mainly commercial and office buildings. He is also a Trustee of Registered Charity Huggard.

Peter Mathias - Chairman

Peter is a Chartered Architect, a co-founder of the international practice Holder Mathias Architects and latterly its Senior Partner/Chairman before his retirement in 2013. During his professional life his role involved advising clients on major mixed development projects and their associated business plans. During his career he was President of the Royal Society of Architects in Wales and a Council Member of the Royal Institute of Architects (RIBA). He chaired its Sound Practice Working Group and was latterly a member of the reorganised RIBA Board. Outside his professional interests, he enjoys the performing arts, and was a member of the Board of Welsh National Opera and a Governor of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama before its incorporation into the University of South Wales Group, a member of its Finance and General Purposes Committee and Chaired its Estates Committee. With the reorganising of the Tirion Group, he was appointed as Group Chair in 2014. His knowledge of residential design and master planning along with a strong social commitment, his experience in governance, business and commercial affairs enables him to make a unique contribution in chairing the Group Board during its formative stages.

Sean Mayo - Chairman

Sean is a Chartered Certified Accountant and commercial real estate developer with almost 40 years' experience in project development and delivery in the UK and overseas. After leaving accountancy practice, he pursued a career in the corporate world of real estate and construction, rising through the corporate ranks to board level with two public limited companies. In 1996 he founded a group of property development companies where he has been a significant shareholder and CEO for the last 25 years. In addition to transacting property investment and developments in Australia and the Caribbean, Sean has been instrumental in a number of major developments locally. Most notably, in its infancy, the Bradley Stoke new 10,000 house suburb of Bristol, and more recently, the 100 acre redevelopment of the former BP Sports and Leisure complex at Llandarcy, near Swansea. Sean is a non-executive director and business consultant to a variety of businesses in the healthcare, telecoms, waste management and maintenance sectors.
