Betty S.F. Lai

Betty's practice focuses on corporate and commercial law, specializing in corporate finance transactions, bank lending, corporate acquisitions, amalgamations and reorganizations, incorporation and maintenance of offshore companies, trademark applications as well as purchase and sale of businesses and franchised operations. Betty also assists health care professionals in establishing, purchasing and selling their practices, the use of corporations in their practice and tax planning, lease negotiations, and partnership, shareholder, associate and cost-sharing agreements. Betty also advises clients on establishing family trusts and offshore trusts and assists foreign corporations and individuals investing in Canada to comply with the requirements of the Investment Canada Act. Betty joined Sun & Partners in 1993 and became a partner in 1996.

Christina Tang

Christina Tang is a Senior Law Clerk in the Litigation Department at Sun & Partners. Christina first joined the firm in 1988 as a law clerk in the Corporate Department and later rejoined our firm in 2000. Christina has extensive experience in handling civil, commercial, and family litigation. Prior to joining our firm she worked in the legal department at the Mass Transit Railway Corporation in Hong Kong. She also worked at Deacons, Solicitors & Notaries in Hong Kong (Kowloon Office) for over 12 years as a Senior Secretary for the Partner-in-Charge of the Litigation Department.

Derek Lee

Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Derek Lee obtained his law degree from Queen's University (1973) and was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1975. He practiced law in Toronto, articling with the law firm of Stikeman, Elliot, Robarts and Bowman and partnering in his own firm of Stikeman, Lee and Chenoweth where he carried on a commercial/corporate/real estate practice. In addition to the practice of law, Mr. Lee served as an advisor and assistant to federal and provincial cabinet ministers between 1982 and 1986. In 1988, he was elected to Canada's House of Commons and served there as a Member of Parliament for 23 years. Mr. Lee is one of Canada's most experienced parliamentarians. He is widely regarded as an expert in parliamentary and government procedures and in 1999, published a law book on parliamentary subpoena powers which is used as a reference in common law parliaments around the world. He was a member of the Parliamentary Committee which reviewed the Canadian Security Intelligence Service Act in 1990 and was a founding Member and served as Chair of the Subcommittee on National Security for over a decade. His initiative in the House produced the first ever oversight of Canada's signals intelligence agency (CSE) and at the request of the Prime Minister, he chaired the Interim Committee on National Security (2004). Mr. Lee has served for many years on and has chaired the Standing Committee on Justice, including the first ever review of Supreme Court of Canada judicial appointments. He was a leading member and chair of the Standing Joint Committee for Scrutiny of Regulations for over 20 years in its highly regarded oversight of federal; regulatory affairs and reform. He was appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Government House Leader between 1999-2001. Throughout his elected tenure, he demonstrated a commitment to rise above partisanship and work collaboratively with his fellow Members of Parliament in order to accomplish measurable results. In the 2006 Federal Election, Mr. Lee obtained both the largest majority and highest percentage of the vote among all Liberals elected to the House of Commons. Derek Lee, who was a Member of Canada's Parliament for 23 years, serves Sun & Partners as counsel to the firm. Mr. Lee has been recognized as being one of Parliament's foremost experts on National Security, a field in which he has been engaged since 1989. Indeed, some of his most important policy work may be found in this area. Internationally, Mr. Lee is a strong advocate and participant in exchanges aimed at reducing political and religious conflict and improving human rights. Among other examples, he has visited the Kashmir and Punjab regions many times, encouraging constructive approaches with governments, political factions and religious groups on both sides of the Line of Control between India and Pakistan. At home in Scarborough, Mr. Lee is a passionate advocate for environmental initiatives. In 2002, he was the driving force behind the Federal Government's decision to set aside 7000 acres of Federal lands as protected green space on the Oak Ridges Moraine connected to the Rouge Park and provincial greenbelt. He has also worked tirelessly for the preservation of the Rouge Valley park system and sat for 15 years as the federal voting member of the Rouge Park Alliance, which governs the 11,500 acre Rouge Park.

Howard Wright

Howard Wright is a trial lawyer at Sun & Partners where his practice includes civil, commercial and criminal litigation. Howard has acted on a wide range of civil and commercial matters, ranging from commercial disputes, injunctions, and mortgage enforcement. Howard started his legal career and completed his articling at the Ottawa office of one of Canada's largest law firms where he concentrated on litigation. He first joined Sun & Partners in March of 2003 and left the firm in January of 2004. Howard later rejoined Sun & Partners in May of 2006. Howard takes a pragmatic and results-driven approach to resolving clients' problems and provides quality and efficient service and advice in the midst of lengthy litigation processes. Howard became a partner in 2008.

Prior to joining our firm, she acted as the Assistant Vice-President in the Retail Lending Division at Bank of America (Asia) Limited. She has worked in the banking industry for over 20 years.

Shen Sibao

Professor Shen Sibao, LL.M, joined Sun & Partners as honorary advisor to the firm in November 2008. Professor Shen Sibao is the Dean of both the Law School at the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE) of Beijing and the Law School at Shanghai University. As a pre-eminent legal expert in many areas of Chinese and international commercial laws, Professor Shen Sibao serves as the Special Advisor to the Supreme People's Court in China, and as a member of the Legal Group of the lecturers for the senior officials in the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. In addition, Professor Shen Sibao is also the Chairman of China International Economic Law Studies Association, a member of the Group of Law of the Degree Commission under the State Council of China, and Chairman of Board, Hua Mao and Gui Gu Law Firm of Beijing. Professor Shen Sibao has been frequently invited to attend the academic activities held in the U.S., Canada, U.K., Korea, EU, Australia, Taiwan and Hong Kong. He has written extensively in the areas of international investment law and international trade law, such as The General Introduction of the Corporation Law in the Western Countries, Model Corporation Law in the U.S., International Investment Law, The Establishment and Management of the Stock Enterprises, International Commercial Law, Foreign-related Business Law in China, and more than 60 law review articles in either Chinese or English. Professor Shen Sibao graduated from Peking University's Law School with a L.L.M degree, and is the recipient of numerous awards including the Fulbright Scholarship. Professor From 1999 to 2000 Shen Sibao was a visiting scholar at Columbia University's Law School in the United States. He has made significant contributions in many areas of law, including international economics law, corporate law, international investment law and law of foreign investment enterprises. Professor Shen Sibao has been invited to participate in the drafting and amending process of foreign investment related laws, the Foreign Trade Law, the Corporation Law, and the Arbitration Law of China.
