Dr. Brian C. Murray is Interim Director of the Nicholas Institute for Energy, Environment & Sustainability, Research Professor at the Nicholas School of the Environment (primary) and Sanford School of Public Policy (secondary), and Faculty Associate of the Duke Initiative for Science & Society. In 2015 he was Fulbright Visiting Research Chair in Environment and Economy at University of Ottawa's Institute of the Environment. He is widely recognized for his work on the economics of energy and climate change policy, including the design of market based mechanisms to reduce greenhouse gases and deploy low-carbon energy. Members of the United States Congress, state legislators and regulators have sought the counsel of Dr. Murray and colleagues in developing energy and climate legislative proposals and regulatory options. Their development of the cost containment reserve mechanism is now in use in several greenhouse cap-and-trade programs in North America. Dr. Murray has been invited as a co-author of several national and international assessments of natural resources, especially related to energy and climate change. Of particular note, he serves on a National Academy of Sciences panel on greenhouse gases and the tax code, where he led the panel's efforts on biofuel subsidies. He was a convening lead author of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's Special Report on Land Use, Land Use Change, and Forestry. He has convened several forums of economic modeling experts to examine and communicate the results of their climate, energy and land use policy efforts to the public and private sectors. His research has examined the economic effects of traditional command-based regulatory strategies for pollution control and more market-oriented approaches such as cap-and-trade programs and emission taxes. He has been a consultant to a wide range of clientele in the public and private sector, including numerous federal government agencies, members of Congress and their staff, state regulatory agencies, CEOs and senior staff from Fortune 500 companies, trade groups, nongovernmental organizations, and other academic institutions. His work has been published in books, edited volumes, and professional journals, including Science, Nature Climate Change, The American Economic Review, The Review of Economics and Statistics, American Journal of Agricultural Economics, Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, Land Economics, Review of Environmental Economics and Policy, Environmental and Resource Economics, Ecological Economics, PLOS One, Ecological Applications, Climatic Change, Mitigation and Adaptation Strategies for Global Change, Energy Journal, Energy Policy, and Forest Science. He is also a regular contributor to Forbes. Julia German, who owns 24 acres of her family's 185-acre working farm, wants to develop a sustainable farm on her property. A recent graduate of Duke Law, Julia has forged a relationship with local tenant farmers, and created an innovative long-term lease agreement that essentially gives her renters the same rights an owner would have. The idea is to eradicate some of the hurdles small farmers typically run into on rented property.
But as ready as the farmers are to begin farming, the German farmland is not. Among many needs are fences for cows and funding for a primary well. Addressing these issues is expensive and yet another reason first-generation farmers struggle to get by.
German knew there was funding for water-quality protections, but she also knew finding those funds was complicated and not unlike the proverbial needle in a haystack. So she hired Unique Places.
"She's trying to have a viable farm and before she can get paid to get a well, she has to fence all the cattle out," says Fisher. "There are three different funding sources-some will pay for the well, some will pay for it but only if there's fencing. It's very complex."
German has confidence in the outcome.
She says, "Fisher has the knowledge of how to get from Point A to Point B ‘I have a well.'"

Mike Barrett is striking a balance between pursuing his own research, and enabling the research of others. As a project manager and Director at the world's largest non-profit Research and Development firms, Mike gets to do just that.
At 23, Mike became the youngest and "least educated" person to receive a grant from National Geographic. Mike's project was to map WWII shipwrecks that posed a risk of oil spills to the fragile reefs in the South Pacific. In the end, Mike mapped more than 3,500 sunken ships, using field-work and historical records. Working at WWF, Mike's colleagues (Duke alums) introduced him to Pat Halpin.
Working with Pat, Mike created a risk index of the wrecks, now known in the literature as the "Barrett Index". Mike shared his data with the Navy, and was able determine the types of oil onboard through a Duke-WHOI fellowship. Unlike most CEM's, Mike stayed in Durham for year two to continue working with Pat, and to work with Luke Dollar and Stuart Pimm on the Big Cats Initiative for National Geographic.
After graduating, Mike was hired by Battelle, the world largest non-profit R&D firm. Working for former CEM, Leslie-Ann McGee ('96) to train U.S. regions in Marine Spatial Planning. Their short course has been recognized as "the resource" by the National Ocean Council, and Mike was invited to build a similar course for the German government. The course is now managed by the Duke Environmental Leadership program.
But Mike is quick to talk about his other passion-encouraging others to pursue their own science. Mike has served almost ten years on the Board for the Explorer's Club's Student Grants, and has spoken several times at Duke to encourage MEM's to submit proposals. "This is a great program to fund people getting out in the field-many of them for the first time."
This passion led to Mike's rotation as the Director of Independent Research and Development at Battelle. Mike also built Battelle's drone program, co-led the data management for the BP oil spill, and helped bring in one of Battelle's largest ever contracts, the National Ecological Observatory Network, a $200M project.

Scott Babcock has served as a project manager and senior planner within the National Park Service's (NPS) Denver Service Center Planning Division since November 2013. Prior to coming to the NPS, he served for about seven years as the strategic planning manager for Colorado State Parks (which became Colorado Parks and Wildlife after merging with the Colorado Division of Wildlife in 2011). He also served as a natural resource planner with ERO Resources and Greystone Environmental Consultants (both Denver-based consulting firms) for a little over six years after finishing his MEM degree at the Nicholas School in 1999.
Scott currently leads a variety of planning teams to help national park units around the country address a wide variety of issues and challenges. Some of his work has included leading visitor use management planning at Zion National Park (UT) and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore (MI), backcountry and wilderness planning at Katmai National Park and Preserve (AK), and road and trail management planning at the Ozark National Scenic Riverways (MO). These planning efforts strike at the core mission of the NPS-essentially conserving resources and providing for their enjoyment in such a manner that they are left unimpaired for future generations. The work that he and his teams are leading can serve as a model for not only other national park units, but also other non-NPS parks and protected areas.
Scott previously served as a Board Member on the Society of Outdoor Recreation Professionals from 2010 to 2014. In 2010, Colorado State Parks awarded him with a Distinguished Service Award for leading development of the agency's strategic plan. Scott is a professionally certified planner through the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) and a certified project management professional (PMP) through the Project Management Institute.

Sidney McLaurin, Jr. spent much of his childhood in the small city of Clinton, Mississippi. Clinton is a relatively suburban place, where quiet neighborhoods are full of decades-old Oak trees and freshly-cut St. Augustine grass. Most folks there are friendly and the seasons come and go without much ado. By and large, the city's residents are well-educated and eschew the negative racial stereotypes of the South. Clinton was, and still is, a slow and comfortable place.
Today, McLaurin lives in Durham, NC and is an integral part of the team that is building Lime, a high growth tech company that offers inexpensive, environmentally-friendly mobility options for cities and campuses. He launched Lime's first-ever market in 2017, shortly after graduating from Duke's MEM/MBA program, and has since continued to help drive Lime's rapid expansion to over 70 operations across the world. Although he's geographically less than 1,000 miles away from his hometown, most people would regard the current point on his life journey as worlds away from the beginning.
Sidney often reflects that his story is probably more fit for a GEICO "surprising" commercial than a bio, and he's grateful for all of the support and blessings that have made it possible. He credits the time in Mississippi for his love of the outdoors and he continues to be fueled each day by a desire to reduce humans' impact on the environment through technological innovation.
