Sérgio Matos

Sérgio Matos received his PhD in Computer Engineering in 2007 by the University of Leicester (UK). He is Assistant Professor in the Department of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics, Universidade de Aveiro since 2018, and researcher in the Biomedical Informatics and Technologies group of the Institute of Electronics and Informatics Engineering of Aveiro since 2008. He is currently the director of the Master's in Data Science at Universidade de Aveiro. His main research interests are in machine-learning, data mining, information retrieval and extraction. S. Matos has published over 100 papers in international journals and conference proceedings. He has been an active participant in several biomedical and clinical shared tasks and community challenges, including Biocreative, i2b2/n2c2, TREC and BioASQ, and is a member of the program committee and reviewer for several conferences and journals in these fields. He has also served as evaluator for RTD project proposals (ANI). S. Matos is currently involved in one European (H2020) and one National research project (FCT). He participated in two other European (FP7) projects and was member of the Management Committee of an ICT Cost Action from 2013 to 2017. He was the PI of a nationally funded research project (FCT) and two exploratory projects in text and data mining, and participated in other four nationally funded research projects. He has supervised 20 MSc students and 5 PhD theses and is currently supervisor of one PhD student, working in the areas of machine learning, natural language processing, information retrieval and information extraction.
