T. Christian Heyne

  • Vice President of Policy
T. Christian Heyne is the Vice President of Policy at Brady, leading all legislative efforts at the federal and state level. Prior to assuming this position, Christian served as the legislative director at the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence. Christian grew up in Thousand Oaks, California. He began advocating for stronger gun laws after a man with a history of violence shot his parents on Memorial Day 2005. His father survived multiple gunshots, but his mother was killed. In the wake of this tragedy, Christian and his Dad started a chapter of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence in Ventura County and helped to pass a number of local ordinances, such as a requirement to report lost and stolen handguns. Shortly thereafter he started Brady's only collegiate chapter at California State University, Chico. In that role in 2007, he helped lobby for AB 1471, which required the implementation of microstamping technology as a crime-solving tool in California. During his career in the gun violence prevention movement, Christian has worked to build consensus both in the states and in Congress. Christian has successfully developed, lobbied, and helped implement a variety of local, state, and federal policies. Recently, Christian worked in 13 states across the country to help introduce and pass extreme risk laws, which allow families and law enforcement to work with courts to remove guns from individuals at an increased risk of violent behavior. He has also collaborated with law enforcement and stakeholders in a number of states to ensure these policies are implemented as effectively as possible. Christian prioritizes strong relationships across the spectrum of the gun violence prevention movement and its relevant partners - from those in academia to policymakers to implementers. He strives to ensure that survivor voices are genuinely heard and reflected in each stage of this work. After receiving a Legal Studies degree and a Paralegal Certificate from California State University, Chico, Christian moved to Washington, D.C., where he currently resides.
