Amanda Padfield

Job Titles:
  • Director of Public Sector Development
Amanda, who joined SUEZ recycling and recovery UK in 1998, is responsible for the strategic direction of our public sector procurement team. This includes both the retention of current business and successfully tendering for new public sector contracts. Having worked in the industry for more than 25 years, Amanda has extensive experience in local authority services, particularly PFI funding and infrastructure development, and local authority-led commercial services.

Chris Thorn - CFO

Job Titles:
  • Chief Financial Officer
Chris has worked for SUEZ recycling and recovery UK for 12 years. Prior to becoming Chief Financial Officer, Chris was Transformation Programme Delivery Director where his primary focus was on the development and delivery of the transformational programme to align the business with its customer base, delivering significant improvement actions and embed cultural changes. Prior to this role, Chris was Head of Financial Control, Mergers and Acquisitions.

Dr Adam Read

Job Titles:
  • Chief Sustainability and External Affairs Officer
Dr Adam Read joined SUEZ recycling and recovery UK as Director of External Affairs in September 2017. He has more than 20 years' experience in the waste sector as an academic, researcher, local authority officer and consultant. Adam is currently responsible for government liaison and working with UK and international trade bodies in the sector, sitting on a number of technical working groups with the ESA, CIWM and FEAD. In his previous role as a consultant, Adam supported local authorities (and their service providers) in reviewing their services, procuring solutions and considering alternative partnering models. Adam is a regular contributor to trade journals, and a well-known conference speaker and workshop facilitator.

Dr Tracey Leghorn

Tracey joined SUEZ recycling and recovery UK's executive committee in 2018. Her Human Resources career extends over 22 years in the public and private sectors across a range of industries, most recently as a People and Organisation Consultant with the world's largest professional service organisation, PwC. Tracey has extensive experience in improving organisational performance, achieving sustainable growth, and in the design and implementation of large-scale transformational change. Tracey is a Chartered Fellow of the CIPD and her academic credentials include a Master of Laws degree and Doctorate from the University of Leicester, where she undertook research in the area of ‘Women and Work'.

Gary Mayson - COO

Job Titles:
  • Chief Operating Officer
Gary joined the executive committee in October 2015. As Chief Operations Officer, he is responsible for all operations and facilities operated by SUEZ in the UK. Gary has been with the SUEZ group since 1998 and has held a number of senior roles in this time, including Chief Operating Officer - Energy on the UK executive committee, General Manager for the Energy division and General Manager for the North. A civil engineer, Gary worked in a range of engineering and technician roles, including at the Environment Agency and Preston City Council, prior to joining SUEZ.

Jane Roberts

Jane joined SUEZ recycling and recovery UK in 2013 as General Manager for Industrial and Commercial before taking up the position of Director of Industrial and Commercial Process Standardisation in 2016. During her career, Jane has worked in both manufacturing and service industries. She started her career in accountancy and progressed through to commercial tendering before moving into senior operations roles at City Link Ltd and Geodis.

John Scanlon - CEO

As Chief Executive Officer of SUEZ recycling and recovery UK, John is responsible for driving forward the SUEZ group's vision in the UK, and for continuing to mobilise SUEZ's newly won contracts in Greater Manchester and Somerset. John's industrial leadership and strategic vision has been forged over his extensive career with SUEZ, since joining in 1991 as one of the company's first employees in the UK. He has been an integral part of the executive committee since 2003. John has held a variety of operational and business development roles within SUEZ, which led to becoming Chief Operating Officer of Operations in 2015, and prior to that Chief Operating Officer of the Processing division. Before these appointments, John was Business Development Director and heavily involved with the first PFI contract that SUEZ won in Surrey in 1999, which he became the General Manager for in 2000.

John Wilkinson

As Chief Development Officer of SUEZ recycling and recovery UK, John is responsible for driving forward the UK's growth strategy in both public and private sector development in line with the overall SUEZ Groups 2030 vision. John has been at SUEZ for over 20 years, forging his career within the finance function as Financial Controller before moving into an operational role in 2012. Since then, John has held a number of Operational and Commercial roles within SUEZ which lead to becoming Chief Development Officer in 2023. Prior to that John was Regional Director for both our Processing North and Energy Operations North businesses. Before these appointments John led the adoption of lean principles in the Industrial and Commercial division as Change Implementation Manager, and he was responsible for the strategic development of the division's North West operations as Regional Business Manager.

John Wrigley

Job Titles:
  • Regional Director - Central
John joined the SUEZ group in June 2014 as General Manager for Central Region Processing Division. Following the restructuring of our business to create a more regionally focused approach, John was appointed Regional Director in November 2017 and is now responsible for all processing, materials sourcing and industrial and commercial functions with the region. Prior to joining the SUEZ group, John held several senior operational roles in both the public and private sectors.

Leigh Broadhurst

Job Titles:
  • Environment and Sustainable Development Lead
Leigh is an experienced Chartered Waste Manager and IEMA Practitioner with extensive waste and resources industry experience spanning across 11 years. More recently Leigh has shifted his interest towards the sustainable development agenda and is currently leading the integration of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals within the SUEZ recycling and recovery UK sustainable development roadmap. Leigh is the co-chair of the SUEZ recycling and recovery UK Sustainable Development and Social Value Steering Committee, and represents the company in the SUEZ Group Sustainable Development Network.

Lynne Malpass

Job Titles:
  • Head of Environment and Industrial Risk
Lynne joined SUEZ in January 2008, having worked in the environmental field since 1996. Lynne has held several senior roles in the company becoming Head of Environment and Industrial Risk in July 2018 following her role as Head of SHEQ from 2015. In her current role, Lynne manages EIR, Permitting, Sustainable Development and technical elements of the landfill business. Lynne is a member of the North East Steering Group for IEMA (Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment).

Mark Taylor

Job Titles:
  • Regional Director - South West
Mark joined SUEZ recycling and recovery UK in March 2023 with 30 years' experience in the waste management industry, gained in the UK and Australia. During his time in Australia, Mark managed waste treatment operations nationally and waste collection and treatment regionally across South Australia and the Northern Territory. In the UK he held senior operational roles in energy from waste, organics, recycling, waste transfer and logistics as well as municipal collections. Until November 2023, he was responsible for the strategic development of the I&C business working with customers to develop solutions required in a rapidly changing waste management industry landscape. Mark is now the Regional Director for the South West and, with his team, is responsible for managing operations at 50 facilities across the region and over 700 frontline staff. The portfolio includes the substantial Cornwall PFI, Devon HWRC and Somerset municipal contracts, plus many more.

Mark Thompson

Mark joined the business in 2002. Previously, he worked in private practice as a commercial lawyer for three years having qualified as a solicitor in 1999.

Matt Rogers - CIO

Matt joined SUEZ recycling and recovery UK in 2016, following positions in the property, insurance and banking sectors. Matt specialises in digital delivery, enterprise architecture and software development to help lead business transformation.

Michael Pusey

Job Titles:
  • Regional Director - South East
Michael, who joined SUEZ Group in 2012, is responsible for our activities across the south-east of England. These operations range from municipal contracts in London and surrounding districts to the innovative Eco Park under development in Surrey. Michael brings more than 20 years' director-level experience to his role from other industries, including logistics and food manufacture, as well as recycling and waste management companies.

Paul Marsden

  • Health and Safety Director
As Head of Health and Safety for SUEZ recycling and recovery UK, Paul has been instrumental in driving forward a transformational behavioural change program ‘Safety in Mind', which has led to a positively strong and inclusive culture embedded throughout our organisation. Since joining SUEZ in 2004 he has held a variety of operational roles across a range of activities starting off his career as a front line operative assisting and promoting recycling with members of the public, moving onto supervisory and managerial roles responsible for the overall service provision. Paul is a key player in raising the profile of health and safety within the recycling and recovery sector, representing SUEZ on strategic groups such as ESA and WISH, and leading groups producing industry guidance published and endorsed by the Health and Safety Executive.

Sarah Ottaway

Sarah Ottaway became SUEZ recycling and recovery UK's Sustainability and Social Value Lead in 2019, after 12 years delivering various programmes related to service enhancement, innovation and behaviour change in SUEZ's public sector operations. In 2018 and 2019, Sarah was included in the Lets Recycle 35 under 35 "young guns" due to her efforts having a notable impact in the resources sector. Sarah is currently responsible for developing the sustainability of SUEZ's services and leading the continual improvement of its social value impact, while utilising her experiences to support SUEZ's policy and circular economy activities.

Steve Holgate

Job Titles:
  • Director of Fleet and Mobilisation
Steve has led the municipal division since 2014 and is responsible for the overall strategic direction of all our municipal contracts and fleet management services. Steve has 30 years of waste management experience. His career began in local government. Since joining SUEZ, he has held positions within our industrial and commercial, treatment, and municipal development divisions.

Steve Patterson

Steve re-joined SUEZ recycling and recovery UK in January 2023, after nearly 20 years of working in senior operational and development roles in the commercial, municipal, automotive and hazardous waste sectors in the UK and the Middle East. As Regional Director - North, Steve is responsible for over 1,000 employees, all non-energy assets across the north of the country, and is working with 19 local authorities, handling c.2 million tonnes of material per annum through 80 facilities.

Stuart Hayward-Higham

Stuart Hayward-Higham is Chief Technical Development and Innovation Officer at SUEZ recycling and recovery UK. Stuart is currently responsible for non-bidding emerging development activities in SUEZ recycling and recovery UK, delivering tools, techniques and information to meet customers' business imperatives. This includes delivering new solutions or making successful niche activities mainstream through to market intelligence, market modelling and forecasting. Main activity themes for Stuart include harnessing waste as a resource, energy and bio-fuels manufacture, sorting, extraction and value enhancement for waste mix resources and the increasing introduction of circular economy based products and solutions.

Tim Otley

Job Titles:
  • National Energy Director
Tim took charge of our energy-from-waste facilities in the south of the country in 2016, as our portfolio doubled. He also has responsibility for the region's landfill business and its associated gas utilisation plants and leachate treatment facilities. A geologist by training, Tim began his career as a graduate management trainee at a small landfill company within the SUEZ group. He went on to establish and run our landfill gas business, and specialised in the trading of energy.
