In 1971 the Danish mining company Greenex A/S (established in 1964 and 62.5% owned by Cominco Ltd through the subsidiary Vestrgron Mines Ltd) obtained a 25-year exploitation concession. Underground exploration in 1971-1972 indicated a probable ore reserve of 4.1Mt grading 15.0% Zn, 5.0% Pb and 28g/t Ag. Fifteen months later the mine was brought into production which lasted for 17 years. During the 17-year life of the mine ore was extracted using a room and pillar mining method, leaving behind large empty caverns (up to 25m high). During the operation the broken ore was hauled by truck to ore passes and then by locomotive haulage to the primary crusher bin just inside the tramway portal. The crushed ore was skipped across the fjord to the ore dressing plant by an aerial tramway with a free span of 1,500m.
