Adeola Akisanya-Ali

Adeola joined as a board member in 2020. She first learned about Amina groups whilst she was at university in Glasgow. She is passionate about promoting BAME engagement and inclusivity in community spaces and the provision of strengths-based support.

Elisa Sajed

Elisa's motivation for joining the board at Amina is to channel her expertise into an organisation which understands the difficulties faced by minority women at both individual and structural levels. She stands as a board member to provide representation for disabled Muslim women and carers. Elisa is a PhD researcher at the University of Strathclyde investigating domestic abuse in South Asian faith communities in Scotland. She has an MSc in Gender Studies and BA (Hons) in Sociology and Criminology. Elisa has many years of voluntary service working with women from BME communities, encouraging political integration and activity, as well as supporting and advocating for minority women suffering from domestic abuse.

Iqra Arsalan

Iqra became a board member in June 2022. Presently a Welfare officer, Iqra is also working towards a Masters in International Human Rights Law (LLM). Iqra carries out volunteer work with local food banks, and currently runs an animal welfare organisation in Karachi with her husband, ARTS Animal Hospital - it is Karachi's first and only animal hospital dedicated to the free treatment of stray animals. Iqra is one of the founders of ‘Feed the poor Karachi' a charitable organisation in Pakistan which assists vulnerable people with no financial means. Iqra is inspired by the human rights work of Amina MWRC, a subject very close to her heart. As a BME Muslim woman she strongly believes in the work Amina do to support BME women.

Nelum Zafar - Treasurer

Nelum has been involved in various charity work since her teenage years. She was employed by FRAE Fife as a project support worker, where she prepared, published and submitted a report to Fife Council on the needs of BME women while studying at Dundee University. Nelum is an ACCA qualified Accountant. She is a Corporate Accounting Manager in the hospitality sector. Nelum is also an ACCA panel member for West of Scotland where she helps support students, new members and takes part in advocacy work. Nelum has a diploma in Public Service interpreting. She worked as an interpreter with Fife Interpreting services, Global Languages and with Central Interpreting Unit for many years.

Parveen Sajid

Parveen has over 15 years of charity and community engagement experience in Glasgow. She is well-known to the community for her voluntary work with charities to empower women. Parveen is a member of the management committee of World Care Foundation charity that works at home and abroad for vulnerable groups. She is a board member of Al-Meezan, an institution for Islamic education for women and children. She is one of the Scottish coordinators for Muslim Bereavement Support Service, a befriending service for Muslim women. Parveen has been running an active group for over 55's at Al-Meezan since 2014. Parveen has a passion for working to empower all women to achieve their potential in every field, and to enable women to stand up for their rights in every aspect of their life.

Safeena Rashid - Chairman

Safeena is one of our Edinburgh based board members. She first became involved with Amina MWRC when she carried out sessional work in Edinburgh and Aberdeen whilst at university. She remembers fondly this giving her the opportunity to work with a range of people and organisations. Safeena practices law and is an advocate in Scotland. Safeena joined Amina as a board member in November 2016. She enjoys the opportunities that the role affords to meet many inspirational women, and attend a variety of interesting events led or backed by Amina MWRC. Safeena values highly the work that we Amina does.

Sangeeta Dhami

Sangeeta has been involved in community work since her late teens. She is a mother of four and a working GP. Sangeeta joined the board in 2022, seeing Amina as a supportive and effective organisation. She is passionate about being involved in shaping Amina's current and future growth.

Sarah Todd

Sarah Todd has been involved with Amina in a variety of capacities since 2014. From late 2022 she is taking maternity leave from the board. She holds an MA in Social Science from the University of Glasgow with a focus on public policy. Sarah works in the third sector on women's labour market equality. She volunteers across the sector with women and children who are survivors of gender-based violence and/or sexual assault.
