Dan Held

Dan has wanted to work in the veterinary field since he was a young boy-he recalls accompanying his father to the veterinarian's office, where he was completely fascinated by the procedures the staff performed. Dan is now living his dream every day as a Licensed Veterinary Technician. Dan was born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He originally attended college to study business, but quickly realized that he wasn't truly satisfied. After being asked by his future wife, Jenn, what he would like to do in life, he couldn't deny it: animal care was Dan's true passion. He began his studies in veterinary technology during the fall of 2007, and completed Baker College's program two years later. He passed his national and state exams in 2009 to officially become a Licensed Veterinary Technician. In his time outside of work, Dan enjoys golfing, hiking, biking, and kayaking in the great outdoors. He and Jenn, who works as a Registered Nurse and is currently working towards her Bachelor's degree in nursing, live in Bellaire with six pets of their own: two dogs and four cats.

Dr. Jeffrey Powers - Founder

Caring for animals has been always been a way of life for Dr. Powers. Ever since he was a child he has always had a deep love for all animals. That is why, it wasn't a surprise when he decided that he wanted to become a veterinarian. Dr. Jeffrey Powers grew up on a small farm in St. Clair County, Michigan. He first inherited a love of animals from his parents and when he got his first dog Pepper, a beagle, in which they immediately developed an inseparable bond. Dr. Powers carried his love for animals all throughout his childhood and loved to read James Herriot's "All creatures great and small" books. Dr. Powers decided to follow in his oldest sister's footsteps who is in the health professions field as well. Dr. Powers graduated from Michigan State University in 1978 with a Bachelor of Science with High Honors, and in 1980 from Michigan State University with a DVM degree with Honors. At the age of 23, he worked under the guidance of Dr. Robert Johnson in Yale, Michigan. He soon established his own practice in 1980, where he would work out of a one room office and would drive the country roads of the thumb of Michigan from farm to farm. Dr. Powers is the founder and owner of Beaver Island Veterinary Services and the owner of Jordan Valley Animal Clinic, providing mixed animal veterinary services to the community of Beaver Island in Lake Michigan and East Jordan Michigan. He is also the founder and former owner of South Sanilac Veterinary Hospital in Peck, Michigan. He continues to care for all animals large or small which explains why his customers often describe him as very caring, sensitive and compassionate in the care of their animals.

Meg Burns

Meg grew up in East Jordan and had her love of animals nurtured from a young age on her parent's farm. Meg joined us in July 2019 after obtaining her Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from Baker College, and moving back to East Jordan and her "small town roots" after spending 11 years in Traverse City. When she is not at the Clinic, she can be found running 5k's or curled up with a good book and her cat, Misty ( Whom she got as a kitten 17 years ago!)

Molly Thompson

  • Veterinary Assistant
A horse-lover through and through, Molly has been competing in barrel racing for 15+ years and was named equestrian of the year in high school. Her collection of animals includes two horses- Sierra and Swift, two dogs-Bailey and Bindi, two guinea pigs-Craig and Clyde, four cats- Gunny, Newman, Boop and Mu Shi and a rabbit- Dr. McCoy. Molly's friendly exuberance does not go unnoticed by pets and their owners, and her cheerfulness calms every pet who graces the Jordan Valley Animal Clinic. Molly is pursuing further veterinary education through Purdue University's Veterinary Technology Distance Learning program and the Jordan Valley Animal Clinic is proud to have her as a team member.

Sara Spanburg

Sara joined us in August 2017, after completing online classes through Animal Behavior College finishing with a certificate in Veterinary Assistance. She is continuing her education thru Penn Foster online working on Veterinary Technology classes. She grew up in Harbor Springs and is currently living in Petoskey with her boyfriend Austin. Sara has been compassionate about animals her whole life and knew she wanted to work in this field at a young age. When she is not at the clinic Sara enjoys spending time boating the waters of Northern Michigan or anything that involves being outside.
