BIOANALYTICAL TOXICOLOGY

At the Bioanalytical Toxicology group, we work at the interface of exposure science, biology, toxicology, and ecology to understand how chemical mixtures as well as nano- and microplastics disrupt biological systems from a molecular to a community level. Using in vitro assays, omics, invertebrate models, and mesocosms, we investigate the impacts of complex exposures to chemicals and plastic particles on human health and the environment. We combine non-target mass spectrometry and computational tools to elucidate the composition of complex environmental matrices (drinking, surface, wastewater) as well as everyday plastic products to better characterize human and environmental exposomes... The group works on multiple projects to characterize the toxicity of nano- and microplastics in aquatic invertebrates. Our research is guided by using realistic plastic particles (e.g., fragments, fibers produced in house), testing natural particles for benchmarking, and including multiple stressors..
