Andrew Freeman

Job Titles:

Andrew founded Fairer Finance with James in 2014. He has over 25 years of experience as a risk manager, think-tank director, consultant and journalist. Among his activities, Andrew runs The Finance Foundation, a not-for-profit think tank. Since 2012 he has been a Risk Fellow at the Centre for Risk Studies, part of the Judge Business School at the University of Cambridge. Prior to setting up Fairer Finance, Andrew enjoyed spells at Deloitte and McKinsey, where he was a founding member of the firm's Global Risk practice. Andrew started his career in journalism, working on the Lex column at the Financial Times before going on to spend 14 years at The Economist. Andrew lives with his family in Cambridge. He is also a Governor of St Mary's School, Cambridge.

Dr. Oliver Crawford

Oliver is Fairer Finance's Head of Research. Prior to joining the business in 2021, Oliver completed his PhD in History at the University of Cambridge. He has taught History at Cambridge, King's College London and the London School of Economics. In 2019-20, he was a visiting fellow at the International Institute for Asian Studies in Leiden. Besides his academic experience, he has worked as an administrator at Capital City College Group. In his spare time, Oliver enjoys long-distance running, cryptic crosswords and Indonesian literature.

Eve McGrady

Eve is a Consultancy Manager at Fairer Finance, leading the company's work on Consumer Duty. Before joining in 2021, she graduated from the University of Bristol with a BA in French and Russian. During her degree, she worked in a tech start-up in Paris, and spent six months studying in Tomsk, Siberia. Outside of work, Eve enjoys cooking and singing in a choir.

Helen Parker

Helen's career has been spent championing consumers' interests, first in executive roles and now as a non-executive. She was a member of the senior leadership team of Which? for more than a decade. As Editorial Director she was responsible for Which?'s independent information and advice, and its comparative ratings. She also served as Policy Director and finally Deputy CEO. Helen now has a number of non-executive roles with a focus on consumer protection and empowerment. These roles include being Deputy Chair of the Financial Services Compensation Scheme, which protects consumers when financial services companies fail, and a member of Aegon's Independent Governance Committee, whose role is to challenge the company on the quality and value for money offered to its two million workplace pension customers.

Iwan Doherty

James Daley

James Daley has been a consumer campaigner and financial journalist for over 20 years. Before launching Fairer Finance in 2014, he worked for the consumer group, Which?, where he campaigned for a better deal for customers of banks and insurers in the wake of the financial crisis. James is frequently interviewed on national television and radio, and has regularly appeared on shows such as Watchdog, Rip-off Britain, Dispatches and Moneybox. Before working at Which?, James spent 10 years as a business and finance newspaper journalist, latterly as the The Independent's personal finance editor and cycling columnist. He is a member of the Chartered Insurance Institute's professional standards committee, and an a member of the Association of British Insurers' Consumer Advisory Group. He lives with his wife and two children in Tooting, where he's also Chair of Governors at Smallwood Primary School.

Ruth Gilbert

Ruth is the Head of Fairer Finance Scotland, which launched in September 2017. She is an experienced consultant who has advised major firms in the insurance and technology sectors on product design and communications. She has designed life and health insurance products, helping companies adapt to their customers needs. Writing the terms and conditions in financial services has featured at many points in Ruth's career. From the early days, she believed helping the reader to understand is even more important than crossing the legal t's and dotting the compliance i's. Her law degree allowed her to take more conservative colleagues some way on this journey. There's no surprise then that she has joined Fairer Finance's team to do more of this for financial services companies in Scotland and beyond.

Tim Hogg LinkedIn

Tim Hogg is a behavioural economist with 10 years experience in advising both the public and private sectors on how to design and implement regulation. Tim specialises in assessing the Consumer Duty implications arising from business models, product design, pricing, and customer communications. Tim has advised firms across financial services on the fair value of their products, including: general & life insurance; investments & pensions; current & savings accounts; mortgages; consumer credit; and funeral plans. He focusses on quantifying consumer outcomes and providing the consumer perspective. He is an experienced trainer on behavioural science, and designs behavioural experiments and surveys. Tim won the International Institute of Communications 2018 Future Leaders Competition and has testified to the European Commission in a competition law context. Tim lives in North London, where he spends as much of his time as he can playing football, frisbee, and any other sport he can get his hands on.

Yasmin Robson
