Alex Johnson

Job Titles:

A graduate of Newcastle University, Alex Joined BGP as a Structural Engineer and is currently working towards achieving his Chartership with the IStructE. A key part of the Newcastle office Structural Engineering design team, he works on projects of various sizes across all sectors. Alex is often the lead structural engineer on a project meaning that he is responsible for the overall structural philosophy along with the controlling the project within the office, attending meetings and ensuring programme dates are met.

Anthony Crosby

Job Titles:

Our most qualified and experienced chartered surveyor, Anthony attends sites to determine both the problem and solution to all building defects. Equally splitting his time in the office and on site, he is able to offer impartial, specialist advice to confirm the integrity of buildings as well as the safety of those living and working within them. Also specialising in party wall surveying, his reports and notes are used to form contracts as well as informing insurance companies. An Associate Director in the office, Anthony is keen to share his experience with the younger members of the team often taking them to site to see problems first hand.

Bernie Roe HNC

Bernie joined the practice in 1990 as an Engineering Technician and became a Director in 2020. Managing the drawing office, he is responsible for overseeing staff workload as well as being a hands on technician himself. Bernie is the direct contact for our position as framework engineers for GlaxoSmithKlein Barnard Castle site. He was also our lead person for the P21 & P22 framework agreements we held with Interserve at the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough. The surveying of structures and bunds on industrial sites, in particular petrochemical, form a large percentage of Bernie's work.

Chris Nixon

Chris joined BGP directly from college after achieving a BTEC diploma in 3D design, he was responsible for the implementation and current documentation surrounding Building Information Modelling (BIM). Primarily working in Autodesk Revit but also competent in AutoCAD, Chris produces construction drawings for all structural items related to a project. Once involved with a scheme, he is the main point of contact within the office and liaises with the design team to offer the structural solutions required to the project. After achieving an HNC in Civil Engineering he completed his degree in Building Project Management in 2012. He was promoted to Associate Director in November 2021 and hopes to begin his routes with professional bodies beginning with gaining his membership with the Institute of Civil Engineers.

David Templeton

David joined BGP in 2018 as a Degree Apprentice. He is currently completing a degree in Civil Engineering and works with the senior structural engineers to produce structural calculations, reports, drawings and specifications. He is quick to learn and brings a mature and methodical way of thinking to any scheme is is part of. We look forward to providing him with all the support he needs to enable him to reach his full potential and career goals.

Ian Millington

With over 30 years experience, Ian is one of our leading structural technicians. Specialising in reinforced concrete detailing, he works in AutoCAD to produce construction level details to be used on site. Part of our industrial site inspection team, Ian has harness and chemical awareness training to enable him to inspect all structural elements of industrial structures. Having site based technicial knowledge, he now provides reports and drawings to be used on site for construction.

Ian Walker

Ian joined BGP in 1989 and is a Chartered Engineer as well as a Member of The Institution of Civil Engineers & The Institute of Leadership and Management. With over 30 year's industry experience, Ian is involved in projects within many of the North East's local authorities with schemes from hospitals, new schools, leisure centres, fire stations and also many complex refurbishment projects. A confident and communicative structural engineer with extensive experience, he leads teams in the structural coordination within complex multi-disciplinary project teams with tight budgets and time constraints, to successfully deliver these projects to time, cost and quality. A hands-on Engineer, Ian brings technical excellence and in depth understanding and experience of delivering high quality, commercially aware, buildable solutions within a team environment. As a chartered engineer, Ian has helped the business develop into a large independent consultancy with an excellent reputation both locally and now nationally. In the past 5 years, he has worked on projects ranging from £50k to £100 million

Jack Ainscough HNC

Following the completion of his HNC, Jack is now studying for his degree in Civil Engineering. He began his career at BGP within our Structural department and moved across to Civils where he is now a highly valued member of the technical team. He uses his knowledge of all areas to produce the information required on site for construction. Liaising with the rest of the design team, as well as local authorities and statutory bodies, he helps our clients gain approval for many items including section 104 and 278 works. Jack is an advocate of our work experience programme and helps guide students through their placements with us.

Jack Hall

Jack joined BGP as a graduate engineer following a full time civil engineering degree in 2011. He is part of the structural engineering design team and works on projects of various sizes across all sectors. He is often the lead structural engineer on a project meaning that he is responsible for the overall structural philosophy along with the controlling the project within the office, attending meetings and ensuring programme dates are met. He is also involved in industrial structural assessment's for asset management on a number of industrial sites in Teesside. Jack is currently a graduate member of the Institute of Structural Engineers and is progressing towards chartered membership.

James Herbert

Since James began his career at BGP, he has worked on variety of schemes in a wide range of sectors including numerous large scale projects. He is experienced in the preparation of the civil engineering designs for the highways, drainage, levels and construction of the infrastructure works for site to work from. He will prepare reports, drawings and documents for site appraisals, Planning applications, tender documentation including calculations, drawings and specifications. James produces construction details in the form of 2D drawings and 3D model information for the Highways, drainage and site infrastructure.

Jeff Hague

Job Titles:
  • Senior Structural Technician
Spending many years based in the steel fabrication, cladding and glazing sectors, Jeff swapped site for the office in 2006. His on site experience both in the UK and abroad serves him well, and he is an established structural technician capable of technically detailing all elements of a project. He primarily works in Autodesk Revit and is also fully competant with AutoCAD to provide sites with the construction level information required.

Jim Conway

Jim joined BGP shortly after the formation of the company in 1987 and is a Chartered Engineer as well as a Member of The Institution of Civil Engineers. As part of the design and subsequently management team, he has been instrumental in the successful development of the business into one of the largest independent consultancy practices in the North East, with an excellent reputation both locally and nationally. He has been responsible for the implementation and co-ordination of the Civil & Structural engineering services delivery within the practice. Jim is a hands on part of the design team, involved in the design meetings, preparation of the project briefs, agreeing program delivery, resources and monitoring of the performance and service requirements. As a Chartered Civil Engineer he is personally involved in many projects directly, contributing the experience of his extensive knowledge of public buildings, leisure facilities, retail, commercial, education, building structures, roads and drainage.

Joanne Adams

Joanne works within our accounts department and is a core member for the team working through project invoices as well as staff time sheets. Other responsibilities include purchasing office equipment and dealing with client queries regarding payments.

John Creber - CTO

Job Titles:

As a Chartered Engineer and a Member of the Institution of Structural Engineers, John joined BGP as an Associate Director in 2019 and was promoted to Technical Director in November 2021. John takes on the lead engineering role on some of our most complex projects. Having previously work for an international consultancy he has extensive experience in successfully delivering complex projects on time and to budget. His responsibilities and duties start at project conception through to project completion on site. He also carries out initial assessments, detailed tender and construction information for both sub and superstructure design to provide the most suitable solutions.

Josh Davies

Job Titles:

Josh joined BGP as an apprentice Civil and Structural Technician in 2015 and is currently working towards his HNC in Civil Engineering at Teesside University on day release, which is now moving into his 2nd year. Josh provides assistance to the engineers and technicians in the production of drawings using AutoCAD, Revit and hand sketches. He is enjoying developing his skills further as he gains more experience and being set different tasks to widen his knowledge. Josh assistance on a wide range of projects from small residential to large industrial / commercial buildings and infrastructure. Through his good work ethic and eagerness to learn, Josh has already established himself as a valuable member of the team. With continued in-house training and support, his skills will develop further and we look forward to seeing him progress his career in the industry.

Lucy Frost MEng

Lucy joined our Civil Design team as a graduate Civil Engineer in September 2020. She returned to BGP after undertaking a number of placements at the practice during her studies. Graduating from Newcastle University with an MEng in Civil Engineering, she specialises in highways and infrastructure. Lucy assists in the production of site wide drainage and external works schemes on a variety of projects across the Healthcare, Education, Leisure, and Residential sectors. A graduate member of the Institution of Civil Engineers, she's now working towards Chartered status.

Matthew Austen

Matthew joined BGP as Technician in 2014 shortly after achieving a degree in Civil Engineering. Having worked at an international steelwork fabricators throughout his studies, he brought with him a wealth of experience in detailing structural steelwork. Matthew is a key part of the Technical Department, working with Autodesk Revit to produce 3D building information models alongside 2D drawings to be used on site.

Matthew Lofthouse

After graduating in Civil Engineering from Teesside University in July 2014, Matthew decided to take a gap year and travelled around Australia before joining our Newcastle Office in July 2016. Matthew has quickly demonstrated an exceptional ability in structural analysis and façade engineering. He has shown a particular flair for structural design in load bearing masonry structures and has designed a number of exceptional structures including the Clumber street and Hillhead Parkway care schemes in Newcastle. Working with various companies and clients nationwide, Matthew also enjoys working on the designs for bespoke steelwork frames and intricate cladding support systems. While working towards achieving Chartership with the IStructE, Matthew is very involved in the structural design process in the office for a wide range of projects from cladding support bracketry to full load bearing masonry structures.

Michael Ramsay

Michael joined BGP as a Structural Engineer in 2009 and became a Director in 2020. Michael is a Chartered Engineer and a Member of the Institution of Structural Engineers. He is currently leading some of our most prestigious large projects and is responsible for a team of Structural Engineers and Technicians. Michael takes on the project lead role on many of our most complex projects. Working closely with multi-disciplinary project teams he helps to successfully deliver these projects on time and within budget. His responsibilities and duties involve the completion of structural assessments and designs from appraisal to completion of works on site. He also carries out the development of detailed tender and construction information for both sub and superstructure design to provide the most suitable and economic solutions.

Neville Baines

Neville joined BGP in 2004 and is a Chartered Engineer as well as Member of The Institution of Structural Engineers. Neville is our Technical Design Manager ensuring technical excellence and continual development whilst also being fully involved in the design process within the office as a hands on designer. Having previously worked for Conder Structures as Lead Engineering Design Coordinator he joined BGP from a national consultancy in 2004. He learned the finer points of economical and buildable design solutions resulting in his extensive detailed knowledge of structural issues with large scale industrial and commercial buildings. From the beginning of his career, he has worked on steel framed industrial and commercial buildings and brings with him his experience of working for a design and build constructor, understanding the requirement for high quality and commercially aware approach to design development. He always takes the lead on the Practice's most complex and challenging projects, advising clients and constructors on the most cost effective solutions for both permanent and temporary works.

Nigel Watson

One of our longest serving structural engineers, Nigel brings a wealth of experience to the office. Specialising in refurbishment works, he is very proud to have worked on a host of Theatre refurbs including Darlington Hippodrome, Middlesbrough Town Hall and Stockton's Globe Theatre. Liaising directly with the structural technicians, he takes the structural lead designer role in providing information for site to construct to. Surveying on site is key to a lot of his line of work which he has become well accustomed to. Being a member to both the Institute of Civil and Structural engineers is testiment to his experience and ability.

Paul Winship

Paul joined BGP in 1997 and is a Chartered Engineer as well as a Member of The Institution of Civil Engineers. Paul has been an integral part of the growth and success of the company for over 20 years, working in the industry for over 30 years. As part of the design team, Paul has helped the business develop into a large independent consultancy with an excellent reputation both locally and nationally. He has worked on projects ranging from £500K to £50 million. A hands-on Engineer, Paul brings a technical excellence, in depth understanding and experience of delivering high quality, commercially aware, buildable solutions within a team environment. As well as the aforementioned skills in structural engineering, he has extensive experience in the field of infrastructure in terms of highways and drainage design.

Richard Walton

Richard has worked for BGP within the Civil Engineering department since 2013 and is a chartered engineer (CEng) with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE). His project experience covers a variety of sectors and includes a number of high-profile education developments within Northumberland such as Darras Hall Primary, Morpeth First School and Ponteland Schools and Leisure. His work includes the production of detailed engineering design information for road and drainage infrastructure for the various design stages and in order to obtain adoption via Local Authorities or Drainage Undertakers using his knowledge of design software packages that includes Microdrainage and AutoCAD Civils 3D. He has vast experience in the preparation of documents for planning that includes flood risk assessments and drainage strategy reports in accordance with the latest statutory legislation and lead local flood authority (LLFA) requirements. He was promoted to Associate Director in November 2021.

Rob Allen

Rob joined BGP as a senior structural technician in 2018 and is capable of working in all sectors of the industry. Specialising in reinforced concrete detailing, he is fully profficient in the software AutoCAD which he uses to produce drawings for construction. Working closely with the rest of the technical team, Rob is the direct link between the architect and our engineers to ensure that the correct detailing is being carried out and coordinated within each scheme. His experience in R.C detailing meant that he was the right man for the job to be detailing one of our largest piled schemes to date. Millburngate in the hisoric city of Durham includes cinemas, hotels, restaurants, car parking and retail units that is sure to offer a unique development for the city and region.

Ross Mungin

Ross is one of our core members in the structural technician team. Working primarily in Revit, he produces 3D models as well as 2D drawings to assist in the visualisiation and construction of projects in all sectors. Specialising in the retail industry, he is leading the redevelopment of Teesside Shopping Park which includes extensions and modifications to existing structures, an overhaul of the car parking system and new glass facades to all units. Working closely with our engineers design requirements, Ross is able to ensure that structural items are modelled within a building information model alongside the architect to eradicate all clashes within a virtual model before the job begins on site.

Sam Johnson

Sam joined BGP in 2018 as a trainee and works within the surveying department providing assistance to the building surveyors with site surveys, reports and administrative duties. He is enjoying developing his skills and has quickly become a valued member of the team. He is always keen to learn and we are proud to be the company helping him to achieve his career aspirations.

Sarah Watson

Sarah joined the BGP administrative department in 2000. Sarah is part of the administration team and provides valuable support to the Teesside office undertaking reception and administrative duties.

Stephen Belbin

Stephen joined BGP as a senior structural technician in 2015. Previously, he has worked for a number of engineering consultancies predominately in the industrial sector. He has spent time as a site based technician assessing structures and providing remedial works and replacement structures. Stephen is part of the technical department working with Revit and AutoCAD to produce 3D building information models, drawings, reinforced concrete detailing and schedules

Stephen Clark

Stephen is responsible for the structural design of many of our larger schemes. Working particularly closely with local authorities, he took on the lead engineer role throughout the building school for the future (BSF) contract. Also the lead of our industrial site inspection team, he has harness and chemical awareness training to enable him to inspect all structural elements of industrial structures. He also has specialised breathing apparatus training which enables him to enter hazardous chemical areas of sites inaccessible to most. Stephen uses his site based technical knowledge to enable him to provide reports and design information to be used on site for construction. He was promoted to Associate Director in November 2021.

Stephen Ramshaw

Stephen joined the practice in 2003 as a civil engineering apprentice and became a Director in 2020. Stephen has developed a key set of technical and practical skills and now manages the Civil & Infrastructure department. He is responsible for the design team management as well as being one of the direct contacts for new projects. Specialising in residential, commercial and infrastructure developments, he coordinates with the design team to offer both civil and structural advice to ensure that projects are being delivered as efficiently as possible.

Steve Proctor

Responsible for the company's IT & Telecoms Infrastructure, completion of tender submissions and software Licencing Steve is an invaluable member of the office. After Finishing his degree in Computer Science at Sunderland University, he joined BGP. Brought onboard to develop the company's IT infrastructure network, as well as providing day to day support to the design staff with their software and hardware requirements Steve has been here ever since. 21 years later, Steve has successfully managed and carried out 3 full office moves including both the Network infrastructure and Telecoms, 4 full server migration upgrades of the network infrastructure as well as the ongoing program of software and hardware replacement.

Tom Brown MEng

  • Structural Engineer in January 2021 Following 4 Years
Tom joined BGP as a Structural Engineer in January 2021 following 4 years at a consultancy in Sheffield. Tom graduated with a Masters degree in Civil and Structural Engineering in 2016. Working on a wide variety and scale of projects from domestic alterations and extensions to large industrial and residential schemes, he takes a leading role in the overall design philosophy of projects. Tom also carries out structural reports for a number of our clients investigating and analysing problems. With experience in the role of Principle Designer on projects and a good understanding of health and safety, Tom is a highly valued member of staff. Tom is currently a graduate member of the Institution of Structural Engineers and is actively working towards chartership in the near future with the support of BGP.

Vanessa Stuart

A knowledgeable Financial Controller with a demonstrated history of overseeing the accounting operations and ensuring the accuracy of financial information. Experienced predominantly in the Oil and gas engineering sector (UK and Dubai) alongside the manufacturing and recyclables industries. Vanessa joined BGP in December 2020.

Zach Waller

Zach joined BGP in 2017 as a Degree Apprentice and is currently completing a degree in Civil Engineering. Zach works alongside our Senior Civil Engineers and produces highways, drainage and detail drawings as well as written specifications to be used to construct on site. We hope to see him continue to develop his knowledge and understanding with the experience gained from his degree and within the workplace.
