We study the pathogenic fungus Cryptococcus neoformans, which causes lethal infections in immunocompromised individuals. We are investigating unique aspects of cryptococcal biology with the dual goals of understanding basic processes and identifying potential drug targets. One focus of our work is the dominant virulence factor of C. neoformans, its polysaccharide capsule. We are examining how the capsule is synthesized and regulated, using approaches ranging from biochemistry and cell biology to molecular biology and genome analysis. We are also interested in the interactions between this fungal pathogen and its host, including how it enters the brain.
