We believe that chemically dependent patients have a disease. Their thinking and their behavior is a reflection of this disease. Craving for the patient's substance is not really in conscious control. Add to that the symptoms of withdrawal may be so severe that using the drug may be the only "realistic" thing to do in the context of the disease. The disease started quite innocently with feeling good from a pill and culminated in a horrible addiction driven by sickness and pain. The "addict" has caused much heartache, disappointment and pain.
