Someone recently asked me, "How can we get more New Yorkers to care about helping older people?" It was a good question. Truth be told, I have yet to meet a New Yorker who said they don't care about helping older people. What I have seen is many New Yorkers who don't yet realize the profound challenges people face as they age in New York City. For example, up to one in five older new Yorkers say they worry about where their meals will come from. Up to three quarters of people over 65 who are homebound, live alone. Once New Yorkers realize these issues exist, they naturally want to help make it better. There are SO MANY ways we can help New York be a better place to age. It all starts by checking in on your neighbors, and that is exactly what you will do by getting involved with Encore. Spend part of a morning delivering meals to a neighbor who can't leave their homes; or spend part of an afternoon socializing with older adults at an Older Adult Center (OAC).
