Dr Abhi Kulkarni

Job Titles:

Dr Abhi Kulkarni is a genetic pathologist who obtained his medical degree in India before training in Montpellier, France and Hannover, Germany to obtain an ‘Advanced Diploma in Molecular Cytogenetics' in 2004. In 2006 he moved to the UK to head a prenatal genetic service in London, and there was awarded fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists, United Kingdom. Dr Kulkarni was actively involved in the European Cytogenetics Association and headed a permanent working group, Molecular Cytogenetics. He was also involved in drafting national recommendations for the use of chromosome microarray in pregnancy and landmark research projects, including the introduction of NIPT onto the NHS, and the 100k genome project. Dr Kulkarni began his career in Australia as a Principal Scientist, Monash Pathology, Melbourne in 2015 from where he was awarded the prestigious Ed Krumins award and an honorary fellowship of the Human Genetics Society of Australasia. He began his training as a genetic pathologist in 2019, working at Monash Pathology, Melbourne and SA Pathology, Adelaide. He was awarded his FRCPA in 2021. Dr Kulkarni's key areas of interest are reproductive medicine from preconception to birth, paediatric genetics, particularly growth and neurodevelopmental disorders, and hemoglobinopathies, and has a strong background in translational research and validation of new technologies and automation in diagnostic genetic medicine. He is passionately involved in educating and guiding medical scientists and genetic pathology trainees

Dr Alice Livings

Job Titles:

Dr Alice Livings completed a Bachelor of Science with First Class Honours in Chemistry at the University of Queensland, before moving to Sydney where she completed her medical degree with First Class Honours at the University of Sydney. She worked in a number of hospitals in the greater Sydney area prior to undertaking her advanced training in Haematology at Royal North Shore and Liverpool Hospitals. Following completion of her training she was the Pitney Fellow at St George Hospital. In 2021 she moved back to Queensland and commenced work at QML Pathology as a consultant haematologist as well as practising as a clinical haematologist.

Dr Colin Ades

After obtaining his Fellowship in 1990, Dr Ades worked at the Royal Brisbane Hospital as a Staff Pathologist for two years. He then come to work at QML Pathology as a Senior Associate Pathologist. After nine years with QML Pathology Dr Ades began working as a Partner at IQ Pathology - a specialist histopathology company. In 2008, he re-joined QML Pathology as a Consultant Histopathologist. Dr Ades continues as a member of the Australiasian Soft Tissue Tumour Registry and the Gastroenterology Society of Queensland. His special interests include head and neck, endocrine, soft tissue, haematopoietic and gastrointestinal pathology.

Dr Darina Vuong

Dr Darina Vuong is a histopathologist and cytopathologist at QML Pathology Gold Coast with special interests in skin, gynaecological pathology and cervical cytology. Dr Vuong studied Bachelor of Science (major Biomedical Science) at The University of Queensland, graduating in 2003, receiving the Alan Blackshaw Prize for Physiology Studies and Dean's Commendation for High Achievement. She went on to study Medicine also at The University of Queensland, graduating with Honours in 2007 and completed her residency at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane. In 2010, Dr Vuong commenced training in Anatomical Pathology at various institutions across South East Queensland, including Royal Brisbane Women's and Children's Hospital, Prince Charles Hospital, as well as a research position at The University of Queensland Centre for Clinical Research in Breast Pathology under the guidance of Prof Lakhani. During her training, Dr Vuong was also an Associate Lecturer in Pathology at The University of Queensland. Dr Vuong was awarded a Fellowship in Anatomical Pathology and commenced work with QML Pathology Gold Coast in early 2015. She is involved in gynaecological multidisciplinary team meetings with colleagues from other specialties and participates in local GP educational activities including on the Renewal of the National Cervical Screening Program. She regularly attends national and international meetings.

Dr Debra Norris

Dr Debra Norris graduated from The University of Queensland with a MBBS Hons in 1984. She then went on to train in histopathology at the Mater and Princess Alexandra Hospitals, obtaining her fellowship in pathology in 1994. In 1997, Dr Norris undertook a fellowship in haematopathology at Massachusetts General Hospital with world renowned authority Dr Nancy Harris. Dr Norris worked as a Staff Histopathologist at the Mater Hospital before joining QML Pathology in October 2002 as a Consultant Histopathologist. In 2005 she became the Medical Director of QML Pathology. Dr Norris is currently a member of the European Association of Hematopathology and reviewer for the journal of Haematopathology. Additionally, she is an examiner for RCPA, on the Pathology MBS review committee, and a senior VMO to Princess Alexandra Hospital where she provides a lymphoma consultative service for lymphoma diagnosis throughout the state. Her special areas of interest are lymphoma (including nodal, extranodal and cutaneous lymphoma), dermatopathology and gastroenterology.

Dr Edward Chew

Dr Edward Chew is a clinical and laboratory haematologist with Fellowships from the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) and Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (RCPA). He has Extended Scope of Practice in Molecular Genetics (Haematology - FISH, cytogenomics and targeted panel testing). His passion for genetics started with his B Med Sci on mouse QTL testing and continued with a PhD at The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research. During his PhD, he identified a novel inherited predisposition to haematological and solid cancers (MBD4-associated neoplasia syndrome) that was included in the 5 th Edition WHO Genetic Tumour Syndromes. He is committed to improving our understanding of genetic diseases and advocating for genetic testing on individual and population levels. To that end, he is a member of national and international societies, including as a Biocurator for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) ClinGen Myeloid Malignancy Variant Curation Expert Panel. He is an RCPA National Examiner (Haematology) and a member of the RCPA Haematology Advisory Committee.

Dr Emma Taylor

Dr Ethan Oost

After graduating with a bachelor's in Medicine and bachelor's in Surgery in 2000 from the University of Pretoria in South Africa, Dr Ethan Oost worked as a general practitioner in rural South Africa and the United Kingdom. During this time, he spent four years working as a surgical trainee before relocating to Australia in 2007. Settling in Perth, he completed his post-graduate training in anatomical pathology in 2015. Dr Ethan Oost joined QML Pathology in late 2015, working histopathology and cytopathology at the Buderim laboratory on the Sunshine Coast. He has maintained a broad interest in general pathology and cytopathology.

Dr Forough Foroughi

Dr Foroughi is a consultant anatomical pathologist at QML Pathology since late 2020. She is involved in diverse areas of anatomical pathology in her current position, mainly dermatopathology, gastrointestinal pathology, uropathology and breast pathology. Before joining QML Pathology, she was working at Royal Darwin Hospital as a staff specialist, after being awarded the Fellowship of the RCPA in 2019. She received two years of training as an anatomical pathology registrar in Darwin from 2017-2018. Before that she was a consultant anatomical/clinical pathologist for 6 years in her home country. She had been awarded an Australian Government's Endeavour Executive Fellowship in 2016, in conjunction with the School of Medicine at Griffith University, Gold Coast. She also had an honorary observership in gastrointestinal pathology in 2014, in University College London Hospital, UK. Dr Foroughi has special interest in gastrointestinal pathology, uropathology, dermatopathology and breast pathology.

Dr George Marshall

Dr George Marshall is an experienced Chemical Pathologist, who after completing his undergraduate medical training in 2006 at the University of Otago, went on to complete his specialist training in Chemical Pathology in Brisbane. In 2013 Dr Marshall achieved his fellowship in Chemical Pathology with the RCPA. In the same year he began work as a Chemical Pathologist for Dorevitch Pathology and later Mater Pathology, before joining QML Pathology in June 2017 as a Chemical Pathologist. Dr Marshall's areas of special interest currently lie in endocrinology, toxicology and inborn errors of metabolism; however, is available for consultation in all areas of biochemistry, endocrinology and toxicology.

Dr Helen Mahoney

Dr Mahoney graduated from The University of Queensland in 1974, before training in anatomical pathology at the Mater and Princess Alexandra Hospitals, Brisbane. In 1984 she joined QML Pathology as a pathologist and is currently in Charge of the North Lakes Laboratory, where she specialises in histopathology. Dr Mahoney continues to be an active member of the Australian Medical Association (AMA) and previously spent two years on the branch council in Queensland, including one year as state secretary. She has also acted as secretary of the Redcliffe and Districts Local Medical Association.

Dr John Adkins

Graduating MBBS with Honours from the University of Queensland in 1981, Dr John Adkins completed his Internship at the Royal Brisbane Hospital. After 2 further clinical years at the QE II Hospital Dr Adkins returned to the Royal Brisbane Hospital, completing his training in Anatomical Pathology in 1989. Joining QML Pathology in 1990, Dr Adkins became a Consultant Pathologist at the Buderim Laboratory, providing pathology services across the Sunshine Coast and Wide Bay regions. He was is now the Pathologist in Charge of the Buderim Laboratory. His special interests centre on general surgical pathology.

Dr Julia Chang

Dr Chang graduated with a Bachelor of Medical Science (Hons) before going on to complete her MBBS (Hons) at the University of Sydney. After graduating in 2000, she began an internship with the Concord Repatriation General Hospital. Following the internship, Dr Chang was the Chemical Pathology Registrar from both Princess Alexandra Hospital and QHPS Central Laboratory, Royal Brisbane Hospital over a four-year period. In 2007 she began working at QML Pathology as a Chemical Pathology Registrar. The next year Dr Chang obtained her fellowship and joined QML Pathology as a Consultant Chemical Pathologist. Her special interests include iron and copper disorders, clinical chemistry of pregnancy, and drug testing.

Dr Kerry DeVoss

Dr DeVoss graduated from The University of Queensland in 1973 before training in chemical pathology at Royal Brisbane Hospital where he went on to become Resident Medical Officer then a Registrar. After a period working in central Queensland, Dr DeVoss joined QML Pathology located in Moreton Bay Region. He later relocated to the central laboratory in Brisbane and became Pathologist in Charge of Biochemistry. Over the years Dr DeVoss has acted in the role of Visiting Pathologist, supervising the operation of the Gladstone (1985-1993) and Darwin (1993-1996) Laboratories. Dr DeVoss is currently the Chemical Pathologist in Charge of the Radio Isotopes/Endocrinology Department - measuring hormones and tumour markers and undertaking antenatal Downs Syndrome risk assessment. His special interests include fertility, thyroid disease, graphical reporting systems, 3D modelling of populations and disease, and automation systems.

Dr Paul Bartley

Dr Bartley graduated from the University of Queensland in 1992. Following training at the Royal Brisbane Hospital, he successfully obtained fellowship with the College of Physicians in the area of Infectious Disease following. Dr Bartley then joined the Royal College of Pathologists and began further education in Microbiology at the Princess Alexandra Hospital and QML Pathology. In 2001, he was awarded the Gus Nossal NHMRC Medical Post Graduate Scholarship to fund his PhD at the Queensland Institute of Medical Research in molecular parasitology. Four years later he was awarded a PhD and in the same year obtained his fellowship with the College of Pathologists. Dr Bartley began working at QML Pathology in 2003, practicing in all areas of clinical infectious disease and as a Consultant Microbiologist. His special interests are in infections in immunocompromised hosts, infections in returned travellers, nosocomial infections and molecular microbiology.

Dr Peter Davidson

Dr Peter Davidson graduated from The University of Queensland in 1985. He went on to practice as a GP in Beenleigh and Chermside before returning to the hospital system to complete his pathology training. Dr Davidson trained in Haematology at the Royal Brisbane Hospital, Greenslopes Repatriation Hospital, and the Australian Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service, before obtaining his fellowship. In 1996 Dr Davidson commenced as a haematologist with QML Pathology and is currently Pathologist in Charge of Haematology and Molecular Haematology. During this time, he has acted as a Visiting Consultant Haematologist to the ARCBS (1996-1997) and the Mater Hospital (1996-present). His special interests include coagulation disorders, iron disorders, non-malignant haematology, the use of expert systems in diagnostic medicine.

Dr Rachel Maywald

Dr Rachel Maywald graduated from The University of Queensland in 2002 with a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Physiology, incorporating and following on with research laboratory experience looking at perinatal brain development in developing models of schizophrenia. She studied Medicine at The University of Queensland, graduating in 2009. She then undertook her training in Anatomical Pathology at various institutions, including QML Pathology, Mater Health Services, The Royal Brisbane Hospital, Princess Alexandra Hospital and Nambour Hospital. She also holds a position as a Senior Lecturer in the School of Clinical Medicine, Royal Brisbane Clinical Unit. Dr Maywald was awarded Fellowship with the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia at the beginning of 2016, and initially worked as a consultant pathologist at The Royal Brisbane and Women's and the Queensland Childrens Hospital, furthering her experience in gynaecological, paediatric and perinatal pathology. Joining QML Pathology in 2018, her professional interests are focussed on gynaecological pathology (including placental pathology) and breast pathology, as well as non-inflammatory skin pathology. She was then appointed as Head of Cytopathology in July 2020. Dr Maywald is a member of the Australian Society of Cytology, the International society of gynaecological pathologists and the Australia and New Zealand Vulvovaginal society.

Dr Rachel Wooldridge

Dr Rachel Wooldridge was initially employed as a Medical Laboratory Scientist, following the completion of her Bachelor of Science (majoring in Genetics and Biochemistry) at Monash University in Victoria. She then went on to complete her Masters degree in Genetic Counselling. Dr Wooldridge studied medicine at The University of Queensland and completed her Physician training at the Gold Coast Hospital. She also undertook advanced training in Haematology (both Physician and Pathology) at both the Gold Coast and Royal Brisbane Women's Hospitals. Throughout her training, Dr Wooldridge was an associate lecturer at Griffith University, a member of Postgraduate Medical Education Council of Queensland (PMCQ), and a representative of the Southern Rotation Physician Training Group. Dr Wooldridge was awarded dual fellowship from the Colleges of Physicians and Pathologists of Australasia and commenced private clinical practice and employment with QML Pathology in February 2015. Her special interests include Haematosis, Thrombosis and Pregnancy related haematological disorders.

Dr Rebecca Cleary

Dr Rebecca Cleary completed her medical degree in 2006 at the University of Manchester in the UK. She then went on to complete two years of clinical practice in the UK before moving to Australia in 2008. Once in Australia, Dr Cleary completed specialist training at several tertiary centres in Brisbane. Dr Cleary completed dual fellowships in a variety of centres in Brisbane including Princess Alexandra Hospital and the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital. In February 2018, the fellowships were awarded from the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia. Dr Cleary began her position as Consultant Haematologist at QML Pathology in August of 2018.

Dr Renu Vohra

Dr Renu Vohra obtained a Doctor of Medicine in Microbiology from the University of Delhi, India in 1994 and commenced training as a Pathologist in Australia in 1997. In 2000, she gained her fellowship with the Royal College of Pathologists Australasia (FRCPA). Dr Vohra worked in private pathology in Queensland, progressing from a Registrar position to a Consultant in Microbiology, between 1999 and 2002. From 2002 to 2004, she worked as a Clinical Microbiologist for Pathology Queensland. Dr Vohra joined QML Pathology as a Clinical Microbiologist in 2004, before being appointed as Pathologist in Charge of Microbiology and Immunology in 2009. Dr Vohra's special interests include bacteriology, molecular microbiology and antimicrobial stewardship.

Dr Sally Appleton

Dr Sally Appleton graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in 2004 from the University of Queensland and then continued her studies, completing her Fellowship in Microbiology in 2012. Dr Appleton held the position of Senior Fellow in Microbiology with Queensland Health at their Central laboratory, Princess Alexandra Hospital Laboratory and the Public Health laboratory. In addition to her full-time duties in the Microbiology and Infectious Immunology areas since 2013, Dr Appleton has held a casual tenure since 2006 with the QML Pathology Warfarin Department continuing a long family association.

Dr Stephen Peyton

Dr Peyton's initial registrar training years were spent at John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle, before he returned to his home state of Queensland to complete a fellowship at Pathology Queensland's Central laboratory at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital. His current areas of professional interest reflect the focus of various research projects in the fields of gastrointestinal, head and neck pathology, oral pathology, soft tissue pathology, general surgical pathology and cytology. Gaining fellowship with the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia, he initially worked as consulting histopathologist and cytopathologist at Helix Pathology, furthering his experience in gastroenterology, cytology and solid tumour pathology. Joining QML Pathology in 2015, his professional interests have since extended to include skin pathology.

Dr Timothy McNamara

Dr Tim McNamara graduated from University of Melbourne in 1986. Following training at Geelong Hospital and John Hunter Hospital, Newcastle, Dr McNamara obtained his RCPA fellowship as a General Pathologist in 1995. He worked with Hunter Area Pathology before being appointed Staff Specialist with Pathology Queensland based at Nambour General Hospital and subsequently at Sunshine Coast University Hospital as Director of Clinical Pathology. In 2005 he formed Coastal Pathology with Dr Joe Gatto which merged with QML Pathology in 2019. His special interests centre on general surgical pathology and cytopathology.

Dr Tony Dare

Dr Tony Dare graduated from the University of Queensland in 1976 and began his career working as a GP on the Gold Coast. He then trained as a Pathologist at the Mater and Princess Alexandra Hospitals in Brisbane. Dr Dare spent two years in Maryborough before commencing at the Prince Charles Hospital, Brisbane, where he worked as a Consultant Pathologist and the Director of Anatomical Pathology. Since 1996, Dr Dare has worked at QML Pathology assuming the position of Pathologist in Charge of Gold Coast and Northern Rivers. Dr Dare has published multiple scientific papers in peer reviewed journals covering pathology of skin, heart and lung. His current special interests are in skin and gynaecologic pathology.
