Dr. Maya credits her previous career in engineering for strengthening her research and critical thinking skills. She taps into these skills as she helps tackle complex patient cases.
Dr. Maya Sankaran received her Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine degree from the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine. Prior to becoming a naturopathic doctor, Dr. Maya was a chemical engineer in Research & Development with an interest in developing environmentally friendly packaging materials. Dr. Maya credits her engineering background for strengthening her research and critical thinking skills and encouraging a detail-oriented focus and the ability to adapt to changing conditions. She feels that these skills help her in tackling complex patient cases.
She decided to pursue a career change to naturopathic medicine after encountering frustrations in conventional medical care for her own health. Through her own experiences as a patient, Dr. Maya dealt with many of the same frustrations her patients experience, including a lack of exploration into foundational aspects of health, such as nutrition, lifestyle, and environmental factors. The rushed nature of appointments offered limited opportunities to ask questions and delve into the reasoning behind treatment decisions, contributing to an overall sense of not feeling heard. Dr. Maya grew up with a deep appreciation of Eastern philosophies and traditional systems of health, including Ayurveda and homeopathy, and was drawn to naturopathic medicine as a field that blends the wisdom of traditional medicine with the diagnostic tools of conventional medicine.
Dr. Maya values a collaborative and individualized approach to healthcare. She believes strongly in healthcare that provides patients with the time and space to share their unique stories, goals, and preferences and views herself as a guide to help patients understand all of the factors that impact their health and ultimately become experts in their own health.
With her research and clinical background, Dr. Maya enjoys doing a deep dive into the underlying factors that affect her patients' health. This starts with collecting a detailed health history for each patient to prioritize laboratory testing and guide treatment plans. She is committed to meeting patients where they are in their journeys and provides a range of treatment options to guide patients to achieve optimal health. Dr. Maya is trained in lifestyle counseling, clinical nutrition, botanical medicine, homeopathy, and the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine and acupuncture. During her clinical training, Dr. Maya completed a mental health rotation and enjoys working with patients with a wide range of conditions.
Kelly helps patients stay on top of their care plan! She'll follow up with up with you to ensure the next step in your health journey is easy and clear.
Marwa uses her training from Institute for Integrative Nutrition and MindBodyGreen to empower patients in making sustainable lifestyle changes to better their health & wellness.
McKenna has a background in integrative nutrition and has a passion for health and wellness. She wants to give you the best patient experience here at MIMC!
Melissa is passionate about bringing a functional medicine approach to her patients in order to get to the root cause of their concerns.
