Salt Boatworks isn't the first company to sell design plans. The concept dates at least as far back as the 1950s, when companies like Glen-L provided customers measurements to draw the boat and cut the wood. But Parchman says those plans still required a certain level of boat-building knowledge, and he wanted people with zero experience to be able to build one. With full-size patterns, "you know the parts are going to come out right. There's no way to fudge the number and end up with one side crooked."
