Alexander Cherkashin

Alexander Cherkashin, M.D.*, is known for his cross-disciplinary work in the fields of orthopedics, outcome studies and data management. After receiving his medical degree at Novosibirsk State Medical University in Russia, he graduated from the residency program at Kurgan Scientific Center under the guidance of Professor Ilizarov. For the next 12 years, Dr. Cherkashin worked in the renowned Ilizarov Orthopedic Research Center in Kurgan, Russia. While working as head of the hip reconstruction department, he conducted research on the prevention of complications during the application of distraction osteogenesis techniques using computer data management. At the same time, he served on the faculty of the department of continuing medical education at the Ilizarov Center. In 1995, Dr. Cherkashin joined the research department of Scottish Rite for Children, and six years later became director of the Orthopedic Data Management Lab. His outstanding work led to development of the Ilizarov Interactive Database for analysis of the Ilizarov treatment outcome and prevention of complications. He is widely published and is co-author of two books and 39 book chapters, and author of 44 patents in the areas of external fixation and limb reconstruction. Dr. Cherkashin serves as an assistant professor in the department of orthopaedic surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center.

Angie Buckmeier joined the staff of Scottish Rite for Children in May 2022 as the Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer.. As a tertiary referral center for children with complex orthopedic needs, Angie works closely with the nursing staff and physicians to ensure a safe environment that provides the highest quality of patient care for all the children of Scottish Rite. In her role, she is also responsible for Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement throughout the organization and develops and sustains an environment that supports excellence and innovation in clinical practice and patient care that supports positive patient outcomes. Angie is a native of Louisiana and received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the University of Louisiana Monroe and her Master's degree in Health Care Administration and Management at the University of Phoenix. Before joining Scottish Rite, she served in various staff nursing and progressive leadership positions throughout DFW. Angie is certified in Obstetrics and Neonatal Quality and Executive Nursing Practice.

Anna Middleton

Anna Middleton, Ph.D. is a Clinical Research Scientist in the Luke Waites Center for Dyslexia and Learning Disorders at Scottish Rite for Children and a Certified Academic Language Therapist. Her clinical training and work in the field of reading disabilities cultivated her interest in the science of reading and the mechanisms by which methods effective reading instruction improve various student outcomes. She completed her M.A. in Psychology at San Diego State University, and her Ph.D. in Communication Sciences and Disorders from the University of Texas at Dallas. Her research interests include optimizing treatment efficacy to improve reading outcomes for all children, characterizing individual differences in response to reading instruction, and enhancing our understanding of the psychological and neurological mechanisms underlying specific learning disabilities, particularly dyslexia.

Ashley Givens

Ashley Givens joined Scottish Rite for Children in 1998. She previously served as Senior Director of Special Events. Ashley is responsible for the organization's fundraising and community awareness events. With her leadership, the team supports the more than 200 annual events designed to inform and engage the public in the Scottish Rite mission of "Giving Children Back Their Childhood." Events encompass fundraisers, community and patient-centered activities as well as health care and medical symposiums; all with the goal of making friends for the hospital. 
 Ashley earned her undergraduate degrees in management and marketing at Texas A&M University Mays School of Business. She serves as co-chair for the Strategic Health Alliance and is an active member of the Rotary Club of Dallas where she is a Paul Harris Fellow and Price Cross Partner. Ashley previously served on the board of directors of the Rotary Club of Dallas and was a gubernatorial appointment to the Texas Office for Prevention of Developmental Disabilities.

Donald E. Katz joined the staff of Scottish Rite for Children in 1986 as a staff orthotist and served as Director of Orthotics through 2007. His responsibilities now include oversight of all Capital Improvement Projects, and he supports the Engineering, Environmental Services, Orthotics, Prosthetics, Psychology and Security departments. Don earned his Six Sigma Green Belt in Healthcare from Villanova University and leads the organization's Lean/Six Sigma efforts. Don earned his Bachelor of Science degree from UT Southwestern Medical Center's Prosthetic and Orthotic program after attending The University of Texas at Austin. He attended The University of Texas at Arlington where he earned his Master of Science in Health Care Administration. He is a Fellow with the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists, an Associate Fellow with the Scoliosis Research Society, and a past president of both the national Academy and the Texas Chapter of the Academy. In 2012, he was appointed to serve as Chairman of the Orthotic and Prosthetic Education and Research Foundation. He authored the book chapter, "Orthoses for Spinal Deformities," in the Atlas of Orthoses and Assistive Devices published by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and has published original research in the journal of Spine, the Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics, the Journal of Prosthetics and Orthotics, the journal of Gait and Posture, and the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.

Dr. Carol Wise

Dr. Carol Wise is Director of the Scottish Rite for Children Center for Translational Research at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (UTSW) and Professor in the McDermott Center for Human Growth and Development and departments of Orthopaedic Surgery and Pediatrics at UTSW. Originally from Texas, she received her undergraduate degree in chemistry from Texas A&M University and her doctorate degree in biochemistry from UTSW. She completed postdoctoral fellowships in human molecular genetics with James Lupski at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and with Michael Lovett at UTSW. Dr. Wise co-directs the division of Molecular Genetics and Scottish Rite for Children GOOD for KIDs, a program aimed at solving rare debilitating musculoskeletal diseases in children using next-generation genomic methods. Dr. Wise is a founding member of the International Consortium for Spinal Genetics, Development, and Disease. Dr. Wise's work focuses on identifying the genetic determinants and underlying mechanisms of pediatric musculoskeletal disorders, particularly adolescent and early-onset forms of scoliosis.

Karl Rathjen, M.D., joined the staff of Scottish Rite for Children in 1996 as a pediatric orthopedic surgeon. In 2012, he was named the President of the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children Foundation. [In 2015, he was also named assistant chief of staff.] Throughout his various leadership roles, his dedication to patient-centered care has remained steadfast. In his role as President of the foundation, Rathjen provides leadership to support Scottish Rite for Children's development and community outreach initiatives. In this capacity, he also directs the organization's first-ever capital campaign, the Boundless Centennial Campaign. Rathjen earned his undergraduate degree from The University of Texas at Austin. He received his medical degree and completed his internship and residency from UT Southwestern Medical Center. She served as the Health Law Practice Leader and was a member of the Trial Department, focusing her practice on health law and commercial litigation. Lori received a bachelor's degree in finance from Baylor University and graduated cum laude from the SMU Dedman School of Law in 1990. Her work has been published in several law trade publications. She is the recipient of the Dallas Women's Lawyers Association Outstanding Corporate Counsel Award and has been featured in Texas Monthly's "Texas Super Lawyers" and Lawdragon 3000's "Leading Lawyers in America." During his time, he worked with major health systems on cultural and operational transformation initiatives around high reliability, B2B brand building and marketing, pre-merger partner vetting and the commercialization and privacy protections of health care data. Prior to Summit, Riordan was the vice president of stakeholder engagement at Texas Health Resources, where he led the realignment and rebuilding of the public relations and internal communications teams to better engage and activate 25,000 employees, partners and the Dallas Fort Worth community. Before that, he spent two years at public relations firm Burston-Marsteller, where he was a senior director specializing in public affairs campaigns, issues management and crisis communications. He also was senior advisor and speech writer for the assistant secretary of the Administration for Children and Families within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Matt Chance joined the staff of Scottish Rite for Children in 2015. As Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, he has oversight of all the clinical, ancillary, nonclinical support and IT aspects of the day-to-day operations, and works closely with the physicians and staff to ensure every Scottish Rite patient receives clinical and service excellence. Prior to joining Scottish Rite for Children, Matt served as Chief Executive Officer of Baylor Medical Center at Uptown and in various operational roles at Children's Medical Center Dallas and with the Veterans Affairs North Texas Health Care System. Michelle Hays joined Scottish Rite for Children as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer in February 2023. Michelle's responsibilities at Scottish Rite for Children include oversight of the Finance, Revenue Cycle, Managed Care and Supply Chain operations. Prior to joining Scottish Rite for Children, she was the Market Chief Financial Officer for HCA Healthcare in El Paso, Texas. She took on progressive leadership roles with St. David's Healthcare (HCA) in Austin, Texas as the CFO for St. David's Round Rock Medical Center, St. David's Georgetown Medical Center and the Heart Hospital of Austin. She started her career as an auditor with Roberts, Cherry and Company in Shreveport, Louisiana. Michelle is a native of Louisiana and earned her bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting at the University of Louisiana Monroe. She is a Certified Public Accountant Inactive. She has served on the Louisiana Society of CPAs committees for New CPAs and Auditing and Accounting. She has been a panelist at the Malcolm Baldrige Annual Conference. Additionally, she has been a board member of the Sun Bowl Association, the Leander Chamber and the Leander ISD Educational Excellence Foundation.

Robert L. "Bob" Walker - CEO, President

Robert L. "Bob" Walker joined Scottish Rite for Children in 1979. He previously served as the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer and was named President/CEO in 2012. In his role, Bob is responsible for the overall strategic and operational direction of the organization and continuing its position as one of the top-ranked pediatric orthopedic centers in the world. He works closely with the Board of Trustees, medical staff and executive leadership to ensure that the highest degree of medical care is provided to our pediatric patients. Bob has served on the board of the Texas Hospital Association and on its Executive and Audit committees. He is a past chairman of the Texas Hospital Association Foundation Board and was a member of the American Hospital Association Regional Policy Board and the Children's Hospital Association Public Policy Committee. Bob is past board chairman of the Dallas-Fort Worth Hospital Council and served for many years on the Shelton School and Evaluation Center board, where he was also chairman. Bob serves on the executive committee of the BMW Dallas Marathon, and he is a member of the advisory boards of The Ronald McDonald House and Camp John Marc. A native of Garland, Texas, Bob earned his Bachelor of Business Administration from East Texas State University (now Texas A&M University-Commerce) and his Master of Health Care Administration from Trinity University. Bob has been honored by both Garland High School and Texas A&M University-Commerce as an Outstanding Alumnus and was awarded the Senior Leader award by the North Texas Chapter of the ACHE. He is a past recipient of the Dean Leonard A. Duce Award for Excellence in Healthcare, awarded by the Trinity University Department of Healthcare Administration, is a past recipient of the Dallas Father of the Year award, and a past recipient of the Anson Jones Award which is presented annually by the Fort Worth Scottish Rite Foundation. Bob is a 33° Scottish Rite Mason and holds fellowship status in the American College of Healthcare Executives.

Sharon Maples joined the staff of Scottish Rite for Children as Chief of Business Development - Strategy in 2016. She is passionate about developing and implementing strategic initiatives, as well as leading health care teams through operational processes to improve the quality of their care. Sharon earned a bachelor's degree in business administration and a master's degree in hospital and health administration from the University of Iowa in Iowa City. Prior to joining the team at Scottish Rite, Sharon supported large physician group practices as a health care consultant and served as CEO of UT Southwestern University Hospitals and Vice President for University hospitals, UT Southwestern Medical Center. She is a member of the International Women's Foundation and Texas Women's Ventures, and has been active with the American Heart Association.

Stephanie Brigger has served as Vice President of Development at Scottish Rite for Children since 2003. She is accountable for the organization's fundraising and development activities. Stephanie joined Scottish Rite in 1987 as director of Ambulatory Care and was the Administrator for outpatient services, medical records, laboratories, chaplaincy services and patient access areas in an administrative role. Stephanie obtained her Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) credential in 2019 and was named Outstanding Fundraising Executive by The Greater Dallas Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) in 2020. Stephanie received her bachelor's degree in nursing from The University of Iowa in 1981 and graduated summa cum laude from The University of Texas at Arlington in 1993 with a master's degree in nursing administration. She was named one of Dallas-Fort Worth's Great 100 Nurses in 1995 and is a member of the Leadership Dallas class of 2003.
