Burl is a natural out-growth on the trunk of a tree which was subject to a combination of unpredictable forces within its cells, creating beautifully highly figured wood. Prized for their unique one-of-kind character, no two burls are identical nor can they be produced on demand. Burls to be sculptured are sourced from nature throughout the world, all without cutting down nor endangering the tree... To reveal the natural wonder already inherent within the burl, every piece is hand hewed . . .converting the wood into a sculptured vessel using only simple traditional 19th century hand tools, no machinery…woodworking unplugged. A challenging and time consuming process; blending skill, labor and design into a shape of unmistakably distinct character. On select burls hand carved embellishments are artfully added. Lastly, a hand rubbed finish of natural tung oil is lovingly applied.
