I have been counselling for nearly 20 years now. Prior to counselling, I held Support Worker posts in rehabilitation and learning disability areas. My initial training was in Psychodynamic Counselling, focusing on areas such as the unconscious, defence mechanisms (a way of dealing and coping with internal conflict and pain) and unresolved personal and relationship issues (both past and present). During my counselling experience, I have also incorporated other models of counselling into my work which include: Systemic, Motivational Interviewing and the Cycle of Change... The cycle of change was particularly useful in my last employment, at the Worcestershire Community Alcohol Team - focusing on contemplation, action and maintenance. It aided my counselling relationship with individuals experiencing alcohol misuse (and other related issues) and thus working towards either reduction control or abstinence from alcohol use.
