Biography
Alden Bumstead comes to the Data Science Initiative via a winding road through literary theory and gender studies, nonprofit consulting, and advocacy for mental health research. This has made her a jack of many trades and master of a few. She has a Ph.D. in American Literature from Duke University and a humanist's fascination for science.

Biography
Dr. Linda Clark holds a joint appointment with the Data Science Initiative and the Sheridan Center for Teaching and Learning at Brown. Dr. Clark is responsible for developing an introductory Data Science Fluency undergraduate course, a Data Science Fellows course, and supporting the work of faculty integrating data science and data literacy into their classrooms.
Before coming to Brown, Dr. Clark earned a Ph.D. in Higher Education and a Master's degree in Counselor Education from Penn State University, and a B.A. degree in Psychology from Clark University. Dr. Clark's career spans administrative positions supporting diversity initiatives, intercollegiate athletics, student support, and institutional research. Her faculty appointments include the Department of Statistics at Penn State and the Department of Educational Leadership at Central Connecticut State University. Dr. Clark's research relates to the organizational aspects related to assessment and operations in higher education, including multiple interdisciplinary works examining assessment efforts of academic programs. Dr. Clark serves on multiple NSF grants examining student outcomes
Outside of academia, Dr. Clark consulted in corporate settings, designing, implementing, and executing statistical analyses as part of larger data science projects. She also supported smaller-scale projects related to health care and customer surveys.

Biography
Holly Case is professor of History focusing on the history of modern Europe who has written two books and a number of academic and general-interest articles on a variety of themes relating to politics, literature, diplomacy, science, war, and the history of ideas. She now teaches a course on the History of Artificial Intelligence (HIST 1956S) and together with Eliezer Upfal in Computer Science has initiated an interdisciplinary reading group on AI across multiple fields at Brown (Computer Science, History, Neuroscience, History of Art, Applied Math, Philosophy, Modern Culture and Media, and Data Science).

Karianne Bergen is an Assistant Professor in the Data Science Initiative and Department of Earth, Environmental & Planetary Sciences, effective January 2021. Her work has focused on machine learning for pattern recognition and discovery in large, complex sensor data sets, with recent applications to earthquake monitoring. Her research interest is in scientific machine learning, including knowledge-guided and interpretable learning for the physical sciences.
Dr. Bergen received her Sc.B. in Applied Mathematics from Brown University and her M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Computational and Mathematical Engineering from Stanford University. She did her postdoctoral training at Harvard University as a Data Science Initiative (HDSI) Postdoctoral Fellow in Computer Science and Earth & Planetary Sciences. She also previously worked as a data scientist at MIT Lincoln Laboratory.

Biography
Nasim is a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Data Science Initiative (DSI) at Brown University, working with Suresh Venkarasubramanian. Her research interests are the societal aspects of machine learning algorithms, algorithmic fairness, recommender systems, GDPR (General Data Protection Regulations), and general machine learning.
Previously she was a Postdoctoral Scholar at Tufts University. She got her Ph.D. in Information Science in 2022, working on fairness-aware recommender systems under the supervision of Robin Burke at the University of Colorado Boulder. She has a master's degree in Data Science from DePaul University in 2016 and a bachelor's degree in Software Engineering.
She loves biking, doing Yoga, and learning to play Ukulele. She gets overly excited about doing small artsy projects and making desserts!

Roberta De Vito is an assistant professor in the Department of Biostatistics and the Data Science Initiative at Brown University with a strong passion for developing innovative statistical models and tools for health problems.
Her work aims broadly on developing and advancing methods for the analysis of high-dimensional, heterogeneous data sets to identify and understand the association and the impact of nutrition and genomic data on diseases. In this big picture, she uses Bayesian approaches and machine learning techniques to investigate issues, such as cancer prevention and detection, and depression on children and teenagers.
Dr. De Vito received her B.S. in Statistics from University La Sapienza in Rome, Italy, and her Ph.D. in Statistics from the University of Padua in Italy. She was a former visiting Ph.D. Student at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health under the supervision of Giovanni Parmigiani. She did her postdoctoral training with Barbara Engelhardt at Princeton University.

Biography
Shekhar Pradhan holds a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Maryland, College Park, and a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He has taught computer science, data science, and philosophy at a number of universities, most recently at Columbia University in their Applied Analytics program. He has also founded three start-ups over the years, leveraging his expertise in machine learning and natural language processing. Currently, his research focus is on investigating strategies for incorporating linguistic knowledge in deep learning frameworks for natural language processing.

Suresh Venkatasubramanian is a Professor of Data Science and Computer Science at Brown University. Suresh's background is in algorithms and computational geometry, as well as data mining and machine learning. His current research interests lie in algorithmic fairness, and more generally the impact of automated decision-making systems in society. Prior to Brown University, Suresh was at the University of Utah, whereas an assistant professor he was the John and Marva Warnock Assistant Professor and received a CAREER award from the NSF for his work in the geometry of probability. He has received a test-of-time award at ICDE 2017 for his work in privacy. His research on algorithmic fairness has received press coverage across North America and Europe, including NPR's Science Friday, NBC, and CNN, as well as in other media outlets. He is a past member of the Computing Community Consortium Council of the CRA, spent 4 years (2017-2021) as a member of the board of the ACLU in Utah, and is a past member of New York City's Failure to Appear Tool (FTA) Research Advisory Council, the Research Advisory Council for the First Judicial District of Pennsylvania and the Utah State Auditor's Commission on protecting privacy and preventing discrimination. For the 2021-2022 academic year, he served as Assistant Director for Science and Justice in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.
