This native New Yorker and former teacher, says that learning about all the new advances and technologies being developed in ophthalmology is very exciting, but the part she enjoys MOST is meeting our patients and helping to make their visit here the BEST experience possible!

Dr. Katherine Ilyayev

Dr. Katherine Ilyayev is a licensed optometrist providing comprehensive eye care at Metro Eye MD. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biology from St. John's University, and then earned her doctorate from SUNY College of Optometry. Dr. Ilyayev is a highly dedicated optometrist, committed to providing personalized and high-quality patient care. Throughout her training, she placed a strong emphasis on ocular disease, surgical co-management, and speciality contact lenses. She has experience in treating and managing various ocular conditions including glaucoma, macular degeneration, cataracts, allergic conjunctivitis, and dry eye disease. She also has a special interest in myopia management and uses orthokeratology, soft multifocal contacts, and low-dose atropine to slow the progression of nearsightedness in children.

Dr. Nicholas Nissirios

Dr. Nicholas Nissirios is the creator and director of Metro Eye MD, LASIK clinics in Astoria and Bayside, New York. Dr. Nissirios is a board certified Ophthalmologist specializing in Cataract, Cornea Transplantation and Refractive Surgery. He completed his medical school training at the University of Athens Medical School in Greece, followed by a 2-year post-doctoral research fellowship in Glaucoma at Mount Sinai Medical Center in NY and an Internal Medicine internship at Albert Einstein/Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, NY. He then completed his residency in Ophthalmology at Nassau University Medical Center/State University of New York (SUNY) at Stony Brook, NY, where he served as chief resident in Ophthalmology. Dr. Nissirios has sub-specialized with fellowship training in Cornea and External Eye Diseases, Premium Cataract Surgery and LASIK/Refractive surgery in New York with two of the top US ophthalmologist in the field. During his fellowship, Dr. Nissirios specialized in cataract surgery with implantation of multifocal, accommodating and astigmatism correcting intraocular lenses, including the most modern Laser Cataract Surgery, being one of the first in New York and one of the few ophthalmologists in the country being certified to operate this latest technology. He was also trained and is fully certified in the latest techniques in custom bladeless laser refractive surgery and corneal transplantation. Dr. Nissirios has been active in ophthalmic research, authoring many article publications, including being involved in multiple prospective and experimental research trials. He is an attending of Ophthalmology at the Nassau University Medical Center participating in the training of Ophthalmology residents. He is also an assistant attending of Ophthalmology at the prestigious New York Eye and Ear Infirmary and Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital/Lenox Hill Hospital in New York city. Dr. Nissirios is member of numerous professional societies including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. Dr.Nissirios and his wife have three kids, Yianni, Nikoletta, and Elias. When Dr.Nissirios is not practicing Ophthalmology he enjoys spending time with his family and playing soccer, the sport he loves the most. Dr. Nissirios is fluent in Greek.

Dr. Pooja Mahadev

Dr. Pooja Mahadev was born and raised in the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania. She attended Penn State University where she obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences and Health Professions. She then graduated from SUNY College of Optometry with her Doctorate in Optometry. She continued her education at Nova Southeastern University to complete a residency in Primary Care with Emphasis on Cornea and Contact Lenses. Dr. Mahadev is passionate about providing personalized and high-quality patient care. She provides comprehensive eye exams and has experience in treating and managing various ocular conditions including glaucoma, macular degeneration, cataracts, allergic conjunctivitis, and dry eye disease. Additionally, Dr. Mahadev is experienced in fitting specialty contact lenses for corneal conditions such as keratoconus, pellucid marginal dystrophy, ocular surface disease, and corneal dystrophies. She also has a special interest in myopia management and uses orthokeratology, soft multifocal contacts, and low-dose atropine to slow the progression of nearsidedness in children. Her passions outside of optometry at our LASIK clinics in Bayside and Astoria, New York include skiing and playing tennis. In her free time, Dr. Mahadev enjoys traveling and spending time with her friends and family.

Elizabeth Derpogosian

Elizabeth was born and raised in Glyfada, a southern suburb of Athens, Greece. She studied Sociology at the Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences in Athens, specializing in criminology. During her studies, she has attended seminars in psychology, special education and linguistics and took part in conferences held in Greece and other European countries such as France and England, on combating domestic violence against women and the establishment of human rights in third world countries. She has worked for several years with children with learning difficulties, providing assistance in their daily study as well as in the development of their speech and expression. Elizabeth, in addition to Greek, which is her native language, speaks English and French. In 2017, she got married to her College Sweetheart and they moved to New York a year later, where they now live and work permanently. Elizabeth, as the surgical coordinator at Metro Eye MD, is dedicated to helping patients before and after their eye procedures, providing information on the entire process so patients know what to expect, guiding them step by step through each phase and making sure that their experience will be as enjoyable and stress-free as possible. In her free time, Elizabeth enjoys reading books and going on outings with her husband. Her dream is to travel to as many countries in the world as she can.
