For 150 years, Masonic Homes has been a trusted community caregiver. In 1867 in downtown Louisville, a group of Masons established the first Masonic Home to care for widows and orphans of Masons lost to the Civil War. Later, more Kentucky widows and orphans arrived as a result of WWI, coal mining accidents and other hardships... At Masonic Homes, the lives of many children from rural areas were transformed as they were educated in traditional studies, and also learned important trades such as printmaking, woodworking, and farming. In 1926, the Home moved to a larger, 127-acre site in St. Matthews. Today, Masonic Homes thrives as an innovative caregiver that offers specialized services to people of all ages and affiliations, at both its historic St. Matthews location, as well as two other Kentucky campuses in Shelbyville and Northern Kentucky...
