Afonso Amaral

Afonso Amaral is a candidate for both the Ph.D Programs in Engineering and Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University and at Instituto Superior Técnico of the Universidade de Lisboa (IST-UL), as well as researcher at IN+ Center for Innovation, Technology and Policy Research. Afonso holds an integrated Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering from IST, and was a researcher for 9 months in the cooperative research program "cátedra 4.0" between IST and The Navigator Company. He has specialized in maturity models and implementation of critical technologies in Small and Medium Enterprises, their integration in Industry 4.0, and how these companies can shape themselves to reap the full benefits of their inherent digital transformation. Currently, he is researching into the entry barriers of critical markets and is interested in topics such as entry barriers, critical technologies, flexibility, supply chain and strategic management.

Ana Sofia Moita

PhD (2009), MSc (2004) and Diploma Engineer (2001) in Mechanical Engineering in Instituto Superior Técnico, Technical University of Lisbon, Ana Moita is a senior researcher in IN+, Center for Innovation, Technology and Policy Research/Instituto Superior Técnico, and an Assistant Prof at Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa. A.S. Moita developed a strong background in wettability modification strategies, including micro-and-nanostructuring techniques applied to surface modification. In the last years, she has deepened these activities for microscale applications, towards devising microfluidic devices for thermal (energy conversion) and biomedical applications. PI/co-Pi of several national and international projects she prepares all the work of the Laboratory of Interfacial plus Microscale Phenomena at IN+ since 2014. Currently she has several projects in collaboration with the industry including a large project with UFRJ - Brasil and Petrobrás, towards the development of a microchannel based heat sink to cool high concentration photovoltaic panels. Through her work and scientific recognition she gained support from a strong national and international network. Being the supervisor of 6 PhD's (5 in progress), more than 50 Master Thesis, 3 Bachelor Thesis and 9 working stages (collaborative international programmes), A.S. Moita regularly lectures Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Heat and Mass Transfer, Experimental Methods in Energy and Environment among other subjects. A.S. Moita was an invited lecturer in 12 international conferences/workshops in the last 5years. Also, A.S. Moita has been an invited lecturer for seminars in several international and national universities. She received 4 awards/distinctions. She is reviewer for numerous international conferences, more than 70 journals and 5 funding agencies (including ESA projects), being part of the scientific and or technical committee of 22 international conferences/workshops. A.S. Moita published 8 book chapters, more than 60 peer reviewed journal papers, most in Q1 and Q2 journals and around 100 conference papers (H=22, more than 1500 citations). She is Guest-Editor in 3 SI's in Applied Science, Energies and Symmetry, journals from MDPI and part of the Editorial board of Experimental Thermal and Fluid Science, Elsevier, since august 2022.

André Gonçalves

Bruno Gouveia

Bruno Gouveia recently completed his master's degree on Mechanical Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon. During his academic years at IST he was involved in several voluntary activities and was also the coordinator of the department of business and institutional relations of the mechanical engineering students' association, Fórum Mec nica. Bruno's main research interests include combustion and diagnostic techniques, mainly applied to biomass and renewable fuels such as biogas and hydrogen. He also has a great passion for teaching.

Carlos Miguel

Carlos Miguel was trained as a mechanical engineer but has a diverse background. With a Masters in Production and Project from University of Coimbra where he was consistently on the top 3% of the students and where he wrote a thesis on mathematical transfer in finite element simulation (DD3Trim, revised and augmented version). He also worked on computer vision, robotics and human-machine interaction in the Colrobot project. Additionally he diversified his education into economics, psychology, computer science, aeronautical engineering. Currently, Carlos is PhD Candidate in the LTI-EDAM Program from MIT Portugal. He is currently working on hybrid propulsion systems for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles using hydrogen being supervised by Prof. Edgar Fernandes at IST and Prof. Douglas Hart from MIT.

Carlos Santos Silva

Carlos holds a degree (1999), a MSc (2001) and a PhD (2005) in Mechanical Engineering from IST. His academic career started in 2004 as lecturer at Escola Náutica Infante D. Henrique (ENIDH), Department of Maritime Engines, Automation and Control Systems area. In June 2008, he joined Instituto Superior Técnico as an invited assistant professor for Sustainable Energy Systems for the MIT Portugal Program, as the WS-Energia Industrial Chair in the Physics Department in 2012, and as an assistant professor at the Mechanical Engineering Department in 2015. He worked in industry at the Neuro-Informatics Department of Siemens Corporate Technolgy, in Munich, Germany between 2001 and 2004 and as a project manager at the start-up Albatroz Engineering bwteen 2006 and 2008. He is a co-founder of WATT-IS since 2012. He is the author of 30 papers in peer-reviewed international journals in systems modeling and operations research and more than 80 communications in international conferences.

David Cruz e Silva

Diana Vieira Fernandes holds a Law Degree (NOVA LAW School), a Post Degree Diploma in Securities Law (Instituto de Valores Mobiliários, FDL) and has a Master in Law and Management (NOVA Law School and NOVA School of Business and Economics). She also received NOVA University's 2011 award of distinction (Diploma of Merit) in the Field of Entrepreneurship. Prior to joining the IN+ - Center for Innovation, Technology and Policy Research at Instituto Superior Técnico, worked on a business association that manages a solar demonstration platform in the Algarve. She also supported several projects related to energy, innovation and data science.

Diana Neves

Diana Neves finished her PhD in Sustainable Energy Systems within the MIT Portugal Program, in 2016, from Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon, Portugal. Before, she had graduated in Meteorology, Oceanography and Geophysics in 2007 and had her master degree in Energy and Environmental Engineering, in 2009, from the same university. Since 2016, she works as post-doctoral researcher at IN+, Center for Innovation, Technology and Policy Research, at Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon. Her main research topics relate to Sustainable Energy Systems planning, through the development of tools to model hybrid and renewable systems. She gives special focus to microgrids, distributed generation and smart grid mechanisms to manage Energy, as demand response, and Energy storage. She has been participating in multiple projects, with utilities, industry and municipalities, towards technology and regional sustainable development, and has publications in high standard international peer-review journals. Additionally, Diana represented Portugal, competing in Sailing at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Diogo Gomes

Diogo Melo Gomes has a bachelor´s degree in International Relations and European Studies from Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa. He also has a master's degree in Environmental and Sustainability Engineering from ISCTE and a postgraduate degree in Engineering and Management of Renewable Energies from Instituto Superior de Engenharia de Lisboa. During his studies he specialized and developed work and research in the area of environmental protection and energy systems, having developed his master's thesis on the role of lithium in the energy transition. At IN+ he is currently working on life cycle and value chain analysis of equipment, materials and systems, for the production of green hydrogen and biofuels.

Fernanda Margarido has a PhD degree in Materials Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico (Technical University of Lisbon). She is Associate Professor with Habilitation at IST/UL, on the scientific area of Environment and Energy of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. She is also President of the Scientific Council and researcher at the Center for Innovation, Technology and Policy Research (IN+). She is the Coordinator of the Waste Processing and Management Laboratory, leading a research group on Materials Recycling of Wastes and End-of-Life Products. Fernanda has been supervisor of 8 PhD thesis and 33 Master thesis. She was co-editor of 3 books and 3 chapters of books. She has been the Principal Researcher of several national and international projects in the field of recycling of wastes and end-of-life products, research that was published in different papers in international conferences (35) and journals (47). She has been an associated-Editor of the International Journal of Mining, Materials & Metallurgical Engineering (IJMMME) (Open Acess), Avestia Editors, since 2014; and a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Powder Metallurgy and Mining, OMICS Group - Engineering Journals, since 2017. She has also organized several courses on post-graduation and professional qualifications and is a member of scientific council of IN+. She was member of the organizing and scientific committee of several international congresses, and has been the representative of IN+/IST in the Coalition for Green Growth, of the Ministry of the Environment since 2016.

Filipe Mendes

Filipe Mendes holds a degree in Engineering Physics (1989), a MSc in Mechanical Engineering (1994) and a PhD in Physics Engineering (2003), from IST. His academic career started in 1989 as Trainee Assistant at the Department of Mathematics of IST and he is Assistant Professor at the Department of Physics of IST since 2003. From 1989 to 1993 he worked at the Centro para a Conservação de Energia (Centre for Energy Conservation), later changed to ADENE - Agência para a Energia (Energy Agency). His research interests focus mainly on thermal behaviour of buildings, solar assisted refrigeration, solar energy and solar energy concentration and simulation of thermal systems.

Florentin Eckl is a research assistant and PhD candidate in Sustainable Energy Systems at IN+ Center for Innovation, Policy and Technology Research. He has a bachelor's degree in Renewable Energies and a master's degree in Energy Engineering from the University of Stuttgart. During his studies, he specialized in the field of energy systems analysis and finally, his master thesis about green hydrogen production and distribution led him to his current research area. At IN+ he is researching on the valorisation of the by-product oxygen in green hydrogen production. The main goal is mapping potential oxygen consumers in Portugal and modelling an efficient distribution network.

Francisco Capucha

Francisco Capucha has a master's degree in Materials Engineering and is specialized the field of Sustainable Development, namely Material Flow Analysis and Life Cycle Assessment. Working as a researcher for C5lab with the goal of assessing the life cycle of cement to provide the Portuguese cement industry with eco-designed pathways to reach carbon neutrality. He spent 1 year in the Netherlands as an exchange student in TU Delft and as an engineer trainee in the offshore engineering company 'Allseas'. Currently taking the PhD in Sustainable Energy Systems.

Francisco Gouveia

Francisco Gouveia is an aspiring engineer deeply committed to sustainable energy solutions. Francisco completed his Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2022 and is currently pursuing a Master's degree in Energy. Before joining the IN+ team, Francisco was a valuable member of the Solar Boat Team at IST, where he played a pivotal role in developing the gearbox for the third solar boat prototype as part of the mechanical systems team. His unwavering dedication to harnessing clean energy and promoting sustainability led him to the IN+ team, where he has been actively involved in the development of a waste management simulation for a city-wide digital twin.

Francisco Pires Costa

Glaucio Lyra Filho

Challenges to decarbonize the residential sector in Portugal is Glaucio Lyra Filho's doctoral research on Sustainable Energy Systems at IN+. Glaucio holds a degree in Electrical Engineering from UFES and a master's from IETEC, both in Brazil. He has worked for 25 years in the mining sector, the last ten years as an industrial project manager. Glaucio is a certified PMP (Project Manager Professional) by PMI (Project Management Institute). He is involved in the Building HOPE project, which aims to develop and validate a Holistic Optimization of Prosumed Energy (HOPE) tool for buildings.

Gonçalo Duarte

Gonçalo Duarte received the Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering (2013) from Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon, Portugal. He is currently Lecturer at Instituto Superior de Engenharia de Lisboa and Assistant Researcher at IN+ Center for Innovation, Technology and Policy Research. His research addresses the real-world, on-road energy and environmental impacts of vehicle propulsion technologies using portable emission measurement systems (PEMS), mainly focus on on-road data analysis methods, current and future vehicle certification standards and procedures, as well as the real impacts of the transition to alternative propulsion technologies. He developed numerical and experimental tools to support on-road vehicle monitoring, covering all current available propulsion technologies, but also portable laboratories to evaluate bikers and pedestrians physiological data and surrounding air quality parameters.

Gonçalo Rodrigues Brás is a Portuguese economist with a PhD in Business Management from Faculty of Economics - University of Coimbra. Since 2006, he has been working as a guest professor or as a research fellow in several Portuguese higher education institutions. For almost a year and a half (2014/2015), he worked abroad as visiting researcher/scholar at a number of European universities, mainly in projects related to entrepreneurship, economic development, innovation processes or strategic management. He previously worked in consultancy, banking and accounting. His current research interests include entrepreneurship, business incubators, competitiveness, strategic and public management.

Helena Rosário da Costa

Helena Rosário da Costa is a candidate for the Ph.D. Program in Engineering and Public Policy at Instituto Superior Técnico. Helena holds a Sociology Degree (NOVA University) and has a Master's in Economics of Innovation and Entrepreneurship (Algarve University). She received Algarve University's 2018 Merit Award. As well, she received NOVA University's 2017 Award of Merit and Excellence and she also received the 2015 NOVA Young Talents Award. Currently, she is a researcher at IN+ Center for Innovation, Technology and Policy Research, Instituto Superior Técnico, Portugal. At IN+ her research interests range from artificial intelligence, innovation, entrepreneurship, and public policy.

Henrique Santos

Henrique Santos holds a Master and Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), University of Lisbon with specialization in Energy. A PhD candidate and researcher at IN+, centered around the challenges that Hydrogen combustion presents and on developing diagnostic sensors based on chemiluminescence emissions and its application to both domestic and industrial burners.

Hugo Castro Silva

Hugo Castro Silva is a researcher at CEG-IST and IN+, and a visiting assistant professor at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Universidade de Lisboa where he has taught several courses including Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Economics, Management and Quantitative Research Methods. Hugo received a PhD with honors in Engineering and Management and an MSc in Industrial Engineering and Management from IST. Though an engineer at heart, his research work is on Labor Economics with a special focus on the relationship between technology and human capital, as well as different aspects of labor market segmentation. His research work has been published in Research Policy.

Hugo Horta is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Education of the University of Hong Kong (working at HKU since September 2014). After completing his Ph.D in Management and Industrial Engineering at the Instituto Superior Tecnico (IST), University of Lisbon, in 2007 (part of it performed in the Netherlands and in the US), and a postdoctoral spell in Tohoku University, Japan, he worked as Advisor to the Portuguese Secretary of State of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education, from 2010 to 2011. He also served as the Portuguese National delegate to the European Research Area Steering Committee on Human Resources and Mobility until 2014, chairing the ERA Working Group "Grant Portability", which analyzed the possibility to establish a grant portability scheme among European countries. Throughout this period, he authored and co-authored 90 publications in international peer-reviewed journals, such as Higher Education, Research in Higher Education, Management Science, Technological Forecasting and Social Change, Science and Public Policy, Research Evaluation, Journal of Technology Transfer, Scientometrics, Minerva, and Studies in Higher Education among others, as well as chapters in edited books and specialized handbooks. His main topics of interest refer to academic research processes and outcomes (including research agendas and research productivity), academic immobility, mobility and knowledge dynamics, and career trajectories of PhD holders. He is currently Coordinating editor of Higher Education, a leading journal of higher education studies, and sits in the advisory/editorial boards of several international higher education (e.g, Journal of Higher Education Policy and Management) and science and technology journals (e.g, Research Evaluation). He is also the Chairperson of the Consortium of Higher Education Researchers (CHER) since 2022, after becoming member of the CHER board of directors in 2018.

Inês Ferrão

Inês concluded her master's degree in Aeronautical Engineering at the University of Beira Interior (UBI), Portugal. Her Master Dissertation entitled "Dynamic Behavior of a Single Droplet Impinging onto a Sloped Surface" focused on the impact of jet-fuel and biofuel droplets onto a dry surface with a cross flowing and sloped surface. Her ambition to work on a greener solution to reduce greenhouse gas and pollutant emissions in the transport sector led her to follow a PhD program focused on the implementation of biofuel in the aviation sector through the introduction of nanoparticles into alternative fuels.

Jaime Cevallos Sierra

Jaime Cevallos Sierra finished the Master of Energy Systems in 2014 at the University of Melbourne and the Bachelor of Systems and Computers engineering in 2006 at the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador. He has researched various areas of energy systems, among them: the transport sector, local and national energy balances, and the potential of renewable energy using GIS. Nowadays, he is a PhD Candidate in Sustainable Energy Systems at the Instituto Superior Técnico of the University of Lisbon, focusing on the development of tools for the evaluation of energy potential in urban buildings.
