It was not until her marriage and formal training as a drug counselor began, that she become cognizant of the varied forms of traumatic events afflicted upon many people in her community. That awareness also brought to light an apparent gap in the available program services offered the community, existing programming either lacked gender specificity and/or tended to minimize or neglect the societal and psychological consequences of childhood abuse.
