Jindra, MD, has pioneered the development of selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) for cold laser treatment of glaucoma since its approval by FDA in 2001; is experienced in glaucoma seton implant operations for patients with advanced glaucoma; and has been a clinical leader in the advancement of non-perforating trabeculectomy for the surgical correction of glaucoma since the mid 1990's. Dr. Jindra's vast experience has been rewarded with the world's largest ongoing case series of patients treated by Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty cold laser surgery for glaucoma, which has been discussed and presented at all major international ophthalmology conferences and meetings. In 2006, Winthrop-University Hospital, Mineola, New York, announced that Dr. Jindra - a leading ophthalmologist and vision scientist specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma and psychophysical and electrophysiological detection of visual impairment - had received the prestigious appointment as Chief of the Division of Ophthalmology. In 2011, after successfully rebuilding the Division of Ophthalmology into a modern and state-of-the-art center for world class eye care, cutting edge ophthalmic surgery and laser treatments, and highly regarded academic training, Dr. Jindra assumed the role of Chief Emeritus. Dr. Jindra has lectured on five continents and has collaborated on research studies with investigators at the Eye Faculty of Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic, Max Planck Institute in Munich, Germany, and the Lions' Eye Institute in Perth Australia. A lead investigator in a National Institutes of Health Small Business Innovative Research Grant for a novel sweep Visual Evoked Potential test for the early detection of glaucoma, in the outpatient setting, Dr. Jindra offers his patients the latest diagnostic testing for glaucoma - such as computerized, digitized, stereoscopic photographs of the optic nerve head; pneuonoplethysmography to yield highly accurate measurements of pulsatile ocular blood flow; and scanning laser polarimetry analysis of the retinal nerve fiber layer. Dr. Jindra has done extensive research and teaching in the contrast sensitivity of the retinal ganglion cells and invented and received a U.S. Patent for an image analysis technique of the retinal nerve fiber layer for the early diagnosis of glaucoma. Dr. Jindra is the author of numerous book chapters and review articles, including one in the prestigious Duane Series of Ophthalmology, and is the author of various brief reports and original articles published in peer-reviewed medical journals. Along with students, residents, and fellows whom he mentors in his office through an official rotation through the State University of New York and Columbia University, Dr. Jindra has presented more than fifty presentations at international peer-reviewed meetings on the subjects of SLT and its role in the treatment and management of glaucoma; most recently he was several times awarded an Honor Presentation for the best poster in the glaucoma section at the Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Annual Meeting of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. Educated at Harvard and Oxford Universities, Dr. Jindra served an internship at Cornell University Medical College and his residency at the Harkness Eye Institute of Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons, where he now serves as Assistant Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology. He continued with research fellowships in the Nobel Prize-winning Laboratory of Biophysics at Rockefeller University; the Pasteur Institute in Lille, France; the Max Planck Institute in Munich, Germany; and the Lions Eye Institute in Perth, Australia. Dr. Jindra served a clinical fellowship at the Glaucoma Service of Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, consistently ranked one of the highest-ranking eye hospitals in the United States, and was founder and is Director emeritus of the Glaucoma Consultation Unit of the Northport Veterans' Affairs Medical Center. In 1992 Dr. Jindra was appointed by the President of the United States of America as a Fellow in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and in 1993 he participated as a Special Assistant on the President's Task Force for National Health Care Reform. He retired after 20 years service as a Surgeon with the US Marine Corps Reserve, retired after 10 years service as commanding officer of the Floral Park Auxiliary Police Unit, and is an NASD-licensed and registered securities analyst. A former amateur boxer, Dr. Jindra has earned a black-belt in Kenpo karate, and is licensed by the FAA as a multi-engine, instrument rated, private pilot.
