Angela Martin

Angela Martin joined Chapter as The Representative of the College of Canons in 2021. Angela has served in the Diocese of Chichester since 2008, when she was ordained at the Cathedral. In this time, she has sat on a number of committees and groups, including as a member of the Diocesan Mission Fund and on the Diocesan Environmental Action Group. Until recently she acted as an Honorary Liturgical Chaplain to The Bishop of Chichester, the Right Reverend Dr Martin Warner, and served the Rural Dean for East Grinstead Deanery. Angela was born to a farming family in Sussex. She cites her upbringing in the rural countryside as inspiration for her ministry. Prior to being ordained, she led a successful career in microbiology for a large pharmaceutical company. Angela departed this role to look after her three children, whilst volunteering in her local community. Angela said: "It is a great privilege to now be called to play an integral part in the continued legacy of the Cathedral's heritage. To have the opportunity to add to it and pass it on to the next generation. This new role working alongside the Dean and Chapter is one that I am very much looking forward to."

Anita Rolls

Anita Rolls' career began as a solicitor for Linklaters, followed by other global organisations such as Morgan Stanley, American Express, UBS and Barclays where she worked in various capacities such as In-House Counsel, Marketer, Private Banker and Executive Coach. In 2015 she founded the Career Intelligence Academy, a company with a mission to help organisations manage career growth in a way that is good for their people and good for the business.

Austen Hindman

Austen is Head Teacher at Bishop Luffa School and CEO of the Bishop Luffa Learning Partnership. Training as an English teacher at the Institute of Education in London, he began his career in Newham, East London. Austen has since worked exclusively on the south coast: at Mayfield School in Portsmouth, Hove Park School in Brighton and Hove and then as Head Teacher at Peacehaven Community School. Austen has held most of the key roles in school leadership at one time or another, including leading Teaching and Learning at Hove Park School and two stints as Business Manager. Austen has always attended his local Anglican church, experiencing the breadth of the Church of England. He presently worships at St Mary's Church, Pulborough, where he is the Safeguarding Officer and an Authorised Lay Minister.

Canon Daniel Inman

Canon Daniel Inman is the Precentor of Chichester Cathedral. In this role, he has a particular responsibility for fulfilling Chapter's 'first and supreme aim…to give continuous witness to the things unseen and eternal, and to offer continuous and reverent worship to Almighty God' (Bishop George Bell's Visitation Charge, 4 November 1948). As such, he has oversight of the Liturgy and Music team at the Cathedral. Canon Inman has a particular interest in integrating art in worship and, with the artists Aidan Hart, Martin Earle and James Blackstone, has been working to establish the Chichester Workshop for Liturgical Art, which seeks to establish in Chichester an international centre for the production, teaching, and theological engagement with, liturgical art. Alongside this, Canon Inman has oversight of adult education in the Cathedral. He is a Governor and a Visiting Fellow of the University of Chichester, where he lectures, and is senior editor of the International Journal for the Study of the Christian Church (Taylor & Francis). Before coming to the Cathedral in 2019, Dr Inman was the Director of Ordinands in the Diocese of Chichester, prior to which he was Chaplain and Junior Research Fellow at The Queen's College, Oxford. Dr Inman is a church historian and is the author of The Making of Modern English Theology: God and the Academy at Oxford, 1833-1945 (Fortress Press, 2014) and is currently writing a study on the Church of England's relationship to Britain's empire from 1688 to the late twentieth century.

Canon Jack

Canon Jack, as Chancellor, assists Chapter in its Governance responsibilities and in the strategic management of the Cathedral, working closely with Ruth Bamford, the Communar and Val Timlin, the Head of HR. He maintains oversight of the Cathedral's ministry to children, families and young people and its work with schools and has operational responsibility for safeguarding in the Cathedral. Jack has also been tasked with developing the Cathedral's relationships with key stakeholders and networks, including diocesan, civic and third sector partners. He serves as a Trustee of St Mary's Hospital and helps to lead the Diocese of Chichester's Church Growth programme. Before ordination Jack worked for an Investment Bank. He joined the Diocese of Chichester as a part-time Parish Development Officer and Bishop's Adviser for Vocations. He has previously served in two parishes in East London and as a Chaplain and Head of Welfare in an Oxford College. He served his title in West London. Jack is passionate about lay leadership, clergy wellbeing, congregation growth, children and young people's ministry and mission and evangelism.

Howard Castle-Smith

Having graduated with a Masters degree in engineering, Howard Castle-Smith spent the last twenty-five years of his career with Air Products and Chemicals Inc., a leader in the production and supply of industrial gases and which serves the industrial, energy, technology and healthcare markets worldwide. Prior to retirement, Howard was Regional Vice President-Tonnage Gases, Europe, Middle East, Africa and India at Air Products. Latterly, Howard has been Hon. Secretary of the Chichester Cathedral Friends, serving the community for the last five years; a role that he will be stepping down from in June 2023. I view the Cathedral as my spiritual home and over the years the place, and the people who worship there, have come to mean a great deal to me. I am very much looking forward to joining the Chapter and contributing to the delivery of the Cathedral Vision in all its fullness. Towards this, I would hope to be able to use my knowledge of the Cathedral afforded me from my time as Secretary of the Cathedral Friends, together with the experience I gained from working in the energy business sector for over thirty years.

The Dean of Chichester has overall responsibility for co-ordinating and developing the life of the Cathedral, in order to further its mission and ministry. As a member of the Bishop of Chichester's Senior Staff, Bishop's Council and the Diocesan Synod he represents the Cathedral in the Diocese and the county of Sussex. As head of the Cathedral Foundation and its principal dignitary after the Bishop, he Chairs the Cathedral Chapter, and with it directs the life and work of the Cathedral. The Dean presides over the College of Canons ensuring that the College is encouraged and enabled to make a full contribution to the life of the Cathedral and exercises leadership in the Cathedral's liturgy, preaching and pastoral care, to develop team working (with both lay and ordained colleagues) in its ministry, and is personally committed to its pattern of daily prayer.

As Canon Treasurer, Vanessa will have strategic responsibility for the care and interpretation of the Cathedral's fabric and treasures. Vanessa became the Associate Vicar of St Mary Magdalene, Lyminster in 2017 and is a member of the Diocesan Advisory Committee for the Care of Churches and Assistant Vocations Officer for the Diocese of Chichester. She read philosophy at London City University and has an MA in Mediaeval History. She trained as a deaconess at Ridley Hall reading Theology at Cambridge and was among the very first cohort of women to be ordained priest in the Diocese of London in 1994.

The Reverend Canon Simon

The Reverend Canon Simon Holland is the Cathedral's Interim Dean. Simon has been the Vicar of Chichester Saint Paul and Westhampnett Saint Peter since 2012 and until recently was the College of Canons representative on the Cathedral's Chapter. Simon's appointment will enable a sense of continuity and flourishing at the Cathedral until a permanent successor to the Dean can be appointed. Simon was installed at a service of Evensong on Sunday 30th April 2023.
