Alvin Ang

  • Principal, Go to Market / Impact
We believe that by having the right go-to-market motions, team, and product strategy, we can maximize strategic value for our portfolio companies. Building a successful business requires a strong team and reliable partners. To get there, you must constantly rethink your approach, embrace new challenges, participate in hard conversations, and maintain an open mind. At Turn/River, we're constantly applying these methods to positively impact the lives of the people we work with. I partner with our portfolio companies to implement best practices & growth systems to accelerate revenue growth. We believe that by having the right go-to-market motions, team, and product strategy, we can maximize strategic value for our portfolio companies. My background is pretty non-traditional. I previously worked at Bechtel Oil & Gas, where I discovered the importance of aligning incentives to drive behavior, and learned how simple changes can yield significant results. Afterward, I started a small agency and worked on projects as a developer, marketer and builder. That taught me the ins and outs of running a business, and gave me a new degree of respect for founders and operators.

Turn/River's approach of bringing tested playbooks to accelerate growth and create value is unique in the private equity space. Continual improvement is a core tenant of everything I do. Turn/River's tested playbooks are designed to enable our portfolio companies to learn, iterate, and improve. This in turn accelerates growth and creates value. After graduating with a degree in geology and geography from the University of Gloucestershire, I worked as a project manager for an internet service provider. This role eventually led me to gain over 20 years of experience in SaaS B2B software. From leadership roles with smaller startups like Ambient.ai to larger companies like Salesforce, I gained valuable insight into running and operationalizing customer success, support, and services organizations that now inform my work at T/R. At T/R, I'm responsible for driving revenue for our portfolio companies by focusing on customer success and services. I help our portfolio companies get closer to and better understand their customers to influence and drive growth.

Bob Crissman

Job Titles:
  • Vice President, Channels
At T/R it is our job to bring together the right marketing plans, direct sales motions, customer success systems, and channel plays to win in the market. Well-developed channels provide a way to quickly scale a business. I love working with channels as they are an effective way for technology companies to reach markets, prospects and customers that they otherwise would not have access to. I never initially set out to be in private equity. When Turn/River reached out to me, at first I thought they must have made a mistake as I had no background in the field. Once I learned more about T/R's unique operating approach though I jumped at the chance to join the team. The firm has really brought together an all star, go-to-market team with a group of people that have proven themselves as leaders in their given functions who also love to team with our portfolio companies to help them grow. Much like F1 teams, T/R's job is to bring together all the ingredients to not just win an individual race but to win the Championship each season. In F1 it's all about the right chassis, engine, driver and pit crew. At T/R it is our job to bring together the right marketing plans, direct sales motions, customer success systems, and channel plays to win in the market.

At T/R, we work proactively to build our portfolio companies into industry leaders. I have always been interested in understanding how things work. I especially enjoy analyzing software companies and the complex technology ecosystems in which they operate. I've found that my colleagues at T/R share that same curiosity which makes for a compelling, collaborative workplace. At T/R, I am responsible for evaluating new investment opportunities and supporting our portfolio companies. My goal is to identify and implement operational best practices that accelerate growth and help our businesses scale. At T/R, we work proactively to build our portfolio companies into industry leaders. Instead of sitting on the sidelines, we're on the field, consistently influencing business outcomes and driving results for our partners. I've worked with software companies in various roles during my career. As an investment banker at William Blair, I was exposed to the technology M&A landscape and the broader capital markets. At Battery Ventures, I utilized a product-market fit investing approach and learned a great deal about how product differentiation can drive market leadership. T/R has provided me with an entirely new lens to view technology investing. Through our operationally focused approach, we don't just identify market leaders, we help create them.

Bryan Payne

It's rewarding to collaborate with our portfolio companies to find a shared vision and be a part of their journeys as they scale to the next level. The depth and skill set that the Turn/River team brings as part of our investment differentiates us from competitors. We believe that operational support is just as important as capital in helping our portfolio companies achieve their goals faster. Today, in my role at T/R, I am responsible for sourcing and evaluating new investment opportunities. However, I actually began my career as an attorney, and spent several years working in a San Francisco law firm where I specialized in representing public entities, pension funds, and corporations across a wide range of commercial and securities-related matters. That experience taught me a great deal about processing and synthesizing information, and articulating complex ideas. It also taught me how to keep cool under pressure, and how to manage processes with lots of moving parts.

It's fulfilling to partner with innovative companies and help them grow into global enterprises through our differentiated approach to operations and investing. When I competed as a professional tennis player, I found that reaching my goals required hard work and the hunger to continuously strive for improvement. At Turn/River, I have found that everyone shares a similar mindset. The team is incredibly driven, hard-working, and collaborative when it comes to maximizing value for the companies that partner with us. I'm passionate about optimizing performance through data-driven analysis, which I get to do in my role as an investment associate by sourcing, evaluating, and executing new opportunities. It's fulfilling to partner with innovative companies and help them grow into global enterprises through our differentiated approach to operations and investing. Our team's drive to continuously improve on successful results, strive for more and be an engaged, value-creating investment partner for our portfolio companies motivates me to be the best investor I can be, and to positively impact those around me. Prior to T/R, I was an investment banking analyst at Barclays, working on mergers and acquisitions, IPOs, and SPACs with fintech companies. I graduated magna cum laude from The University of Pennsylvania, earning a B.S. in Economics with concentrations in Finance and Legal Studies.

We're always looking out for operational inefficiencies that we've solved before, and are always open to learning new strategies for growth. I love solving complex problems. And at T/R, every day brings a new challenge. We're always looking out for operational inefficiencies that we've solved before, and are always open to learning new strategies for growth. I studied aerospace engineering at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, which taught me how to break down complex, daunting problems into digestible pieces. I brought that knowledge to the aerospace and defense industry, where I worked as a sales engineer at TE Connectivity alongside Lockheed Martin, Space Systems Loral, and even some flying taxi startups (yes, that's a thing). At T/R, I surface vital insights that deliver on our investment thesis, implement tools and systems at portfolio companies, scale data teams for our portfolio companies, and help build investable T/R intellectual property.

Getting to know others on a deeper level builds trust in the workplace. I love understanding where people come from and learning about their journeys. Getting to know others on a deeper level builds trust in the workplace. At Turn/River, my opinions are heard, and I'm encouraged and supported in my decision-making. It's fulfilling when people notice and appreciate your role on a team.. I've never felt more empowered and celebrated at a company! While earning my degree in Communication, I worked for the UC Davis Athletics department as a corporate sponsorship intern-the perfect role for a lifelong student-athlete. After graduation, I moved to Los Angeles and joined The Honest Company, gaining valuable experience during the company's rapid growth stage. I later followed my passion for sports to the San Francisco Giants. In two seasons with the team, I held the title of top sales consultant, in which I contributed to the organization's record 500th consecutive sellout, as well as selling out the Spring Training season. From there, I went on to apply my skills to new industries, taking on a role managing a location for a coworking operator, TechSpace, before moving into commercial real estate property management.

We take pride in our unique model, which focuses on operational excellence rather than cost-cutting. One remarkable thing about Turn/River is that our culture of collaboration is so strong, so deeply ingrained in the very fabric of the organization, that you almost have to remind yourself not to take it for granted. It's rare to find an organization that's free of unproductive friction and internal politics, one where everyone is laser focused on creating value for our companies. In my role at T/R, I serve as both a partner and mentor to the heads of marketing inside each of our portfolio companies, helping them set a long-term strategy for growth, and working alongside them to implement those tactics. I'm the person who watches their blindspots. I alert them to the problems they don't see coming-the kind that won't become obvious until weeks, months, or years down the line. Doing this job requires an equal level of fluency in both the analytical skills that power our data-driven performance marketing strategies, and the more creative thinking that goes into branding and messaging. Fortunately, I've always been something of a left brain-right brain hybrid. After graduating from Dartmouth College, I began my career at TATTOO Brand Strategy, a boutique firm where I learned to understand buyers by analyzing their purchasing behavior. I then decided to switch gears and joined a performance marketing agency, where I spent years running enormous SEO and paid media campaigns for enterprise software clients like Microsoft. That experience inspired me to take a position at Aurea Software-where I ran a go-to-market team that built marketing programs for the firm's entire portfolio-and later led me to T/R.

I believe in helping others unlock their untapped potential. I believe in helping others unlock their untapped potential. At Turn/River, I am committed to ensuring our companies understand the complex circumstances and metrics that drive their success, and to helping them build a growth plan that drives optimal outcomes. While studying economics at the University of Chicago, I learned that simple explanations rarely tell the entire story in a world where outcomes are driven by a complex set of incentives and external factors. After college I joined the global investment banking firm William Blair, where I focused on software mergers and acquisitions, helping companies communicate their value and growth opportunities to potential acquirers. These experiences sharpened my understanding of the factors that drive software growth, and how we can build lasting value for our companies.

It's fulfilling to have contributed to something that makes other people's work-life easier. I work on a myriad of financial projects aimed at keeping T/R running smoothly (financially speaking) from bill processing to budgets and forecasting. Fun Fact: When I started as an employee with T/R in 2020, I was both the newest member of the team and one of the oldest members of the team since my initial work with T/R started in 2015 as their part-time bookkeeper.

By combining real-life experiences with portfolio-wide data aggregation, we create a framework that has the potential for outsized results. My job is to empower everyone around me, both the executives at our portfolio companies and our internal team members, to produce at the highest level. I've spent my entire career anticipating what's next and building motivational structures that enable my team to be successful in the now. I always strive to stay two or three steps ahead-looking out for obstacles, identifying opportunities, and doing everything I can to keep everyone on the same page. I got my start at Plumtree Software, where I first learned to solve real business problems with technology and a dash of process. I then transitioned from sales engineer to sales executive and manager, selling tens of millions of dollars in enterprise software and related professional services over just a few years. Around this time, Dominic Ang asked me to help him evaluate an online scheduling company called BookFresh. Before I knew it, I had signed on as CEO. Growing that business taught me that success for SaaS companies isn't necessarily about having the best technology, the best product, or even the best marketing; it's about optimizing product delivery. For example, at one point, I discovered that a large portion of BookFresh's customer churn was being driven not by a problem with the product, but by an obscure credit card billing error. Numerous small enhancements like that one helped us build a growing, profitable business that was eventually acquired by Square.

It's fulfilling to help our portfolio companies achieve their goals, overcome rising challenges, and find new avenues of success. At T/R, I work with our acquisitions to optimize and improve their marketing teams, campaigns, and processes. Although I majored in chemical engineering in college, I discovered my true love for marketing during my very first internship. It kickstarted my career in marketing, one that combines the quantitative discipline of engineering with the creative elements of marketing to propel data-driven growth. I was drawn to T/R for the opportunity to share my knowledge and experience with a diverse set of companies and help them drive new levels of growth. In my role as VP of Marketing, I combine creativity with data to develop innovative approaches to solving problems.

Strong relationships enable us to openly and honestly work together to meet any challenges we face as a team. "Where there's a will, there's a way," is something I take to heart every day. Between Turn/River's talented team and our amazing partners in the portfolio, we pursue our goals with intention and confidence. I spent the first four years of my career in the financial services industry, starting a demand generation business for mortgage companies. I've worked in software sales at Verizon, joined SaaS startup Visage, and worked for the fintech company SquareTrade. With each of these roles, I became more and more interested in understanding the analytics behind a go-to-market strategy, and how data can help us find insights and predictability that improve our decision-making. Leveraging those principles, I joined a marketing technology startup called Impact and built their account management team. Today, building solid and lasting relationships is an essential part of my work with T/R. I partner with CEOs in our portfolio to leverage the skillsets and aptitude of their management teams and our ops team to build and deploy repeatable playbooks that drive growth. I find joy in helping members of our portfolio companies achieve their goals, but the path to victory is a long road filled with many obstacles. Strong relationships enable us to openly and honestly work together to meet any challenges we face as a team.

At Turn/River, I focus on identifying prospective portfolio companies and market opportunities that align with our investment thesis. It is incredible being part of a team that understands software as deeply as we do at T/R, and each day I look forward to exploring how we can help companies grow into market leaders through our operationally-driven lens. Before coming to T/R, I studied Informatics with a focus in Human-Computer Interaction at the University of Washington. My coursework in software development and entrepreneurship led me to work for a B2B SaaS startup for the majority of my time in college, sparking my passion for working with high growth technology companies. Outside of work, I am a competitive equestrian in the jumper and equitation divisions. You can also find me hiking, traveling, rooting for Boston sports, and trying just about every new restaurant that I can in San Francisco.

I lean on my curious nature every day at T/R. As I work with our portfolio companies' sales teams, I'm always curious about how the sales process is working, what makes the top performers excel, and what similarities exist when we win or lose a deal. Jen (Benson) Brooks

Job Titles:
  • Principal, Customer Success
We have all the tools and functions a company needs to scale, and the agility to move and adjust quickly. I remember drafting my first executive title at a then $5M start-up software company called Rapid7-now a publicly traded cybersecurity and DevOps company. At the time, the core objective for my role was to keep customers renewing maintenance contracts, so I was the Head of Renewals. Within months of launching a renewals program, it became clear that the true purpose of my role was to create customer value, drive revenue growth, and increase enterprise value-which we all now recognize today as Customer Success. Over a decade later, nothing has changed. Within every software company lies a customer base with latent potential for growth, but most organizations need help capturing it. That's where our team comes in, with repeatable playbooks, strategies, and tactics to activate customer growth. I learned the fundamentals of Customer Success by building, operating, and optimizing each phase of the customer journey while working at various Fortune 50 enterprises. It's where my love for operational strategies and tactics began.

It means a lot to me that the comment I most frequently hear from CEOs is "Turn/River is different." I believe the best way of knowing is doing. Growing up, I spent most weekends selling parts at computer trade shows, helping my dad run his one-man shop. That's how I experienced firsthand the challenges bootstrapped companies face and the resiliency of their leaders. I've always liked figuring out how things work. My perspective on software growth has been shaped by experiences with businesses of all kinds, at all stages (even a brewery). I've invested in software from pre-launch to post-IPO, and worked everywhere from seed-stage venture to Google. As a VC, I met many impressive founders and even helped a few grow their ideas into multibillion-dollar businesses. But I also saw how the venture industry can sideline healthy companies or set them onto cash-burn treadmills.

I enjoy collaborating with people and reaching the end goal together, whether that is a smooth quarter-end close, year-end audit or even just creating efficiencies within our team. What I appreciate most about working at Turn/River is the dynamic synergies within the company and the level of support that is given throughout each level of the business. Prior to T/R, I managed all in-house fund accounting for Golden Gate Capital's evergreen fund and drove process improvements that spanned multiple departments.

Turn/River is all about honing in on targeted growth levers that can give our portfolio companies an advantage in efficiently driving revenue growth. Growth can be hard. That's why it's important to have an experienced guide that has traveled the road before. Together, we can steer clear of puddles and pitfalls, and generally enjoy a bit of a smoother ride. Turn/River is all about honing in on targeted growth levers that can give our portfolio companies an advantage in efficiently driving revenue growth. Every company is different, but what doesn't change is T/R's dedication to constantly improving our "tried and true" playbooks to help our portfolio companies accelerate revenue bookings and capital efficiency. In my role, I partner with T/R portfolio companies to optimize sales team structure and sales process. I aim to transform what are often already high-performing teams into even higher velocity sales engines. If Marketing's job is to help drive leads, our job in Sales is to convert those leads into new sales. Using T/R playbooks, we share our data-driven insights on what's working well and what needs further iteration.

T/R's mission is to help product-focused software companies with great bones reach their next phases of growth. There's a new breed of highly-efficient, mission-critical, product-led software companies today, and we've found they're not always a great fit for the existing financial ecosystem. They're oftentimes too capital-efficient for venture capital, too small for large-cap private equity, and there's still too much value left to be created to sell to a strategic acquirer. Turn/River is purpose-built to fill this gap by offering flexible capital that meets the liquidity and growth needs of founders, alongside strong operational support and playbooks to help accelerate growth profitably. At T/R, I work across the whole investment lifecycle-from sourcing new opportunities, to executing investments, to partnering with our Ops Team and portfolio companies to help carry out our investment theses. My favorite part about my job is getting to see a company through its journey at T/R from start to finish. I graduated with a Political Science degree and minor in Journalism from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with the intention of pursuing a career in Corporate M&A law. That vision shifted after I started working in sales & marketing with a start-up called Bannerman, which led to a love for the world of software-and eventually to Turn/River!

Good habits create success. Persistence, consistency, and collaboration have always guided my work. Good habits create success. Persistence, consistency, and collaboration have always guided my work. At Turn/River, I source, evaluate, and close B2B software deals. First, we identify companies compatible with T/R from an investment perspective and then build relationships based on trust and mutual respect. We get to know our potential portfolio companies by understanding their history and building a future by working strategically to think one step ahead of all possible outcomes. I take pride in identifying and building relationships with business owners who use our expertise to establish sustainable business models. Before joining the software industry, I built a biodiesel company from the ground up, producing 10 thousand liters daily by the time I left. In my next role, I implemented a multi-million dollar project across all core departments at Hikma Pharmaceuticals. At software firm zulu5, I helped lead the company's expansion into the Nordics. These experiences taught me the importance of quality control, internal collaboration, and how software can improve productivity. I went on to build the sales department as Head of Sales at GrowthGenius and doubled the size of Constellation Software Inc.'s smart manufacturing software portfolio. These roles solidified for me why you need to know your customer's business as much as they do and how to evaluate the software companies' potential. My undergraduate degree in biochemistry and chemical engineering from the University of Ottawa and my master's in entrepreneurship from Lund University gave me a strong foundation of analytical and scientific thinking, which I've applied throughout my professional life. A key part of my background is all the places I've lived. I was born in Syria and lived in Poland, Jordan, Sweden, Canada, and soon the United States. Outside of work, I enjoy playing soccer, squash, and chess and spending time with my two young kids and wife. As a dedicated fan since 1994, I also never miss a Juventus game.

It's all about developing long-lasting relationships built on trust and mutual respect. I love win-win deals. In my area of Customer Success, we design programs and best practices that deliver real, tangible value to our customers. And when we expand our footprint and are able to capture commensurate revenue in return, we can then invest even more in building better products. That's a true win-win in my book. To me, it's all about developing long-lasting relationships built on trust and mutual respect. That's the real key to any success. T/R works alongside our companies to unlock the next level of growth by leveraging the potential of their teams and products (with a bit of focused process and structure). There's nobody who wants you to succeed more than we do. If you win, we both win. You can think of T/R as your trusted advising partner, sounding board, and co-pilot on your journey to accelerate revenue growth in a profitable, rapid but sustainable manner.
