Ahmed El Alfi

Founder and Chairman of Sawari Ventures, named as one of the most creative people in the world by Fast Company, Ahmed El Alfi has been an early stage/growth investor for over 30 years, translating to an extensive experience in funding and nurturing early stage companies. In 1990, he founded Hybrid Capital Partners, a private investment partnership. From 2010 to 2013 he founded Sawari Ventures, Flat6Labs, Nafham, and TATP. Flat6Labs is the MENA region's leading startup accelerator. Nafham is the top Arabic online video educational platform covering the Egyptian, Saudi and Syrian public school curriculums. TATP took over management of half of the American University in Cairo's Tahrir Square campus to form The GrEEK Campus; a 25,000 square meter office park where over 130 companies work and collaborate. In addition to Sawari Ventures' investments, his current portfolio includes NeuroTrainer, Pacific Toxicology, and Zignal Labs. Prior to becoming an early stage investor in 1990, he was Senior Vice President of Jefferies & Company, where he worked for 10 years. He has served on the Boards of Directors or Advisors of several corporate boards as well as multiple academic institutions.

Dr. Bassam Saadany - CTO, Founder

Bassam Saadany, co-founder and CTO of Si-Ware Systems. Bringing MEMS products to market, at Si-Ware his group developed the world's first single-chip FT spectrometer. With more than 25 years of experience in the photonics and semiconductor industry, his background includes R&D as well as business management. Before co-founding Si-Ware, he has been with MEMScap, MentorGraphics, and Enppi. He obtained his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in electrical engineering from Ain Shams University, Cairo, and a Ph.D. in MEMS and Nanostructures from the University of Paris XI, France. He is an author and co-author of more than 100 publications in international journals and conferences, as well as holding more than 50 patents. Bassam is the principal inventor of SiMOSTTM technology enabling micro fabrication of optical systems on a single chip.

Dr. Emad Eskandar

Emad is an entrepreneur with more than 25 years experience in Food, Agriculture, and Technology industries; building & ramping up startups and transforming large corporations. Emad started his career as an R&D engineer, before joining ITWorx in 1996 as a cofounder. He went on to hold commercial and strategic executive positions at Syngenta HQ from 2006-2015. In 2016, he founded and managed investment and operations startups in Switzerland in the healthy food space. He is based in Switzerland. Emad holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from the American University (1992), a Master of Business Administration from INSEAD (2006), and a Doctorate of Business Administration from the University of Liverpool.

Dr. Erik Deutsch

Dr. Deutsch is a senior engineering executive, entrepreneur, and recognized expert in QCL, MEMS, FTIR, and spectroscopy. He brings over 20 years of experience leading the strategic development of diverse new and existing technologies and bringing disruptive handheld and miniature spectroscopy products to market. He possesses the rare combination of innovative technical leadership with a strong business acumen with over 10 patents in novel spectroscopy technologies and systems. Dr. Deutsch received his B.A. in Physics with a minor in Computer Science from Vassar College and his S.M. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from MIT with a focus in MEMS and Optics.

Dr. Florian Eigenmann

Florian has more than 20 years of experience in spectroscopy. Before joining Si-Ware, Florian was with Bruker Optics Molecular Spectroscopy division for 10 years. While in Switzerland, he built a strong sales team that accomplished market leading growth in the Swiss market. Next, he joined the Bruker North American team, serving as business development manager in near-infrared, with a focus on the agriculture, food and feed market. Florian then returned to Europe, where he was responsible for growing the ReactIR business at Mettler-Toledo AutoChem, successfully driving them to become the market leader for reaction monitoring with in-situ spectroscopy. Most recently, Florian was global head of sales at IRsweep, a young spin-off company from ETH, with a cutting edge spectrometer based on midIR QCL frequency combs. Florian is a chemical engineer and received his Ph.D. from ETH in 2005.

Dr. Hisham Haddara

Hisham has 37 years of R&D and management experience in the semiconductor industry. Prior to founding SWS, Hisham was with MEMScAP as President for Asia and the Middle East overseeing business development activities in the region. Before that, he was Executive Vice President and President of MEMScAP Egypt, during which time he established and managed an R&D center focusing on RF IC design and MEMS component design for optical applications.Hisham was also CoFounder and General Manager of ANACAD Egypt, which was later acquired by Mentor Graphics Corporation. In his role with Mentor Graphics, he managed the Egypt facility and was later appointed as Chief Scientist in the Analog/Mixed-Signal Simulation Division where he started an initiative for analog design re-use. Hisham obtained his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Electrical Engineering, both with the highest honors, from Ain Shams University. He received his Ph.D. degree in Microelectronics from the National Polytechnic Institute, Grenoble, France. His research work on sub-micron transistor reliability won the best thesis award by the French CNRS (National Scientific Research Center). Hisham is a professor of microelectronics at Ain-Shams University, Cairo. He has authored and co-authored two books, several patents, and more than 100 scientific publications in international journals and conferences.Hisham is the chairman of the electronics division of EITESAL, (Alliance of electronics and IT companies in Egypt). He served on the board of the National Science and Technology Development Fund (STDF) and is a member of the board of trustees of the Egyptian "Technology Innovation & Entrepreneurship Center".

Mostafa Medhat

Mostafa joined Si-Ware from the start as the company's first engineer, leading the R&D team to develop the world's first single-chip FT spectrometer. With more than 17 years of experience in the semiconductor industry, his background includes Optics, MEMS, Spectroscopy and Data Analytics. He has also worked with Si-Ware partners to develop different products that serve the Agriculture, Food, Beauty, and Personal Care Products industries. Mostafa obtained his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in electrical engineering from Ain Shams University, Cairo in collaboration with Interuniversity Microelectronics Centre (IMEC) in Leuven, Belgium. He also holds an MBA in project management and is currently a DBA candidate at the International Business Academy of Switzerland (IBAS). He holds more than 15 patents and patent applications, has authored/co-authored more than 30 publications, and has contributed to a book.

Ralph Hewitt

Ralph has more than twenty years of experience working with near-infrared spectroscopy and production and quality management in companies such as Eli Lilly & Company, Archer Daniels Midland Company, Cargill, Pinnacle Foods, and Perten Instruments. In 2013, Ralph shifted his focus to FT-NIR technology. He joined Bruker Optics and held positions of increasing responsibility for more than 8 years. Most recently, he was Director of Sales & Marketing for North America where he implemented a number of systems and tools to achieve market-leading growth. Ralph attended Indiana State University where he did undergraduate studies in Chemistry and Geology.

Youssri Helmy - CEO

Youssri is an entrepreneur and investor who has successfully founded, operated, and exited several startups globally. He has over 30 years of experience in engineering, product management, marketing, and business development in a wide range of technologies. Before Si-Ware, Youssri founded ITWorx in 1994, incubated and spun off LaserStorm (MBO), FileWay (exited), Otlob.com (sold to Orascom), and NetCelera/SwanLabs (sold to F5). After exiting ITWorx in 2007, he cofounded IdealRatings, Roboworx, and Eonite Perception (sold to Intel).Youssri earned his Bachelor of Science degree in electronics and telecommunications engineering from Cairo University. He is an active member of the technology community in Egypt and in Silicon Valley where he resides with his family.
