As a Staff Consultant with Engineering Systems Inc. (ESi) in the fire and explosion practice, Alejandro investigates fire and explosion incidents across the United States. Alejandro is a licensed professional engineer with over 14 years of experience in the areas of process safety, chemical safety, hazardous materials, fire protection engineering, fire dynamics, life safety, incident investigations, HSE, and hazard & risk management. His expertise includes risk management, safety system reliability, health & safety (HSE), fire protection and alarm systems, buildings & marine life safety, fire dynamics, fire & explosion modeling, process hazard analysis, dust hazard analysis and compliance with industry codes and standards.
He has risk management and technical risk & reliability engineering experience for industrial facilities such as upstream (e.g., production, drilling, offshore, and onshore), midstream (e.g., pipeline, gathering and distribution), and downstream (e.g., refineries) oil & gas installations, chemical and petrochemical facilities, liquified natural gas (LNG) facilities (liquefaction and regasification), food manufacturing, and manufacturing facilities. Additionally, he has experience in supporting diverse non-industrial matters that involve hazardous materials, safety systems failures, fire protection systems failures, risk assessments and hazard evaluations.
Prior to joining ESI, he worked as a process safety and risk management consultant where he supported the design and operation of chemical process, pipelines, and manufacturing facilities from the fire & explosion perspective.

Alexander McCulla is a mechanical engineer in ESi's Automotive practice and brings significant expertise in the design, performance, and failure analysis of specialty purpose vehicles and equipment used in various industry sectors, including motorsport, oil and gas, and industrial-commercial construction. His experience spans the full lifecycle of these vehicles, including research and development, diagnostic and performance analysis, risk assessment, and failure analysis. Mr. McCulla also has significant experience in project management.
Prior to joining ESi, Mr. McCulla gained a wealth of experience in the operation and maintenance of high performance vehicles, working as a driver, driving instructor, mechanic, and engineering team lead for professional racing competitions. In these roles, he worked directly with clients and groups to help develop, implement, and manage specific projects in the areas of vehicle testing, product research, and vehicle/component tuning.

Ms. Moen is an aviation accident investigator at Engineering Systems, Inc. (ESi). She specializes in helicopter piloting and operations. She is also an expert in parachute operations. Ms. Moen served 14 years as an officer in the U.S. Army, including three tours as a combat helicopter pilot in the AH-64D as well as flight time in the Bell 206. She led multiple mission-critical response efforts, including aircraft search and rescue operations, joint multinational training exercises, and combat aviation operations. She has over 1,100 flight hours including combat, Pilot Night Vision System Forward Looking Infra-Red (FLIR), and Night Vision Goggle (NVG) time.
Ms. Moen also has significant civilian aviation experience. She is an FAA Rotary Wing Commercial and Instrument Pilot. She also has fixed wing experience in Cessna 172/182 as well as Piper Arrow/Camanche and PAC 750. Currently, Ms. Moen holds a commercial and instrument pilot FAA rating for rotary wing and a commercial rating for single-engine and multi-engine aircraft. She has experience as pilot for parachute operations. In addition to pilot expertise, she is a United State Parachute Association Accelerated Freefall Instructor and has 1,300 jumps (military and civilian).

He has performed structural condition and damage assessments for numerous structures, including buildings damaged by fire, tornadoes, and snow. Ms. Ashley Solek is a Senior Staff Consultant in the Civil Engineering Practice Group with Engineering Systems, Inc. (ESi). Ms. Solek has been with ESi for 6 years, specializing in forensic and investigation related services. She has a wide range of experience with the following services: cause and origin, scope of damage, scope of repairs, repair protocols, repairability, and failure analysis. Her work has included, but is not limited to, investigations of both commercial and residential fire losses, storm damage, window and door assembly damage, and truss analysis.
Ms. Solek specializes in commercial and residential roof damage assessments due to wind, hail, moisture intrusion, and fire damage. Due to her work with ESi, she is familiar with various types of roofing, including asphalt shingles, TPO, clay and concrete tile, metal panels, and built-up roofing systems. Her work in these areas include cause and origin or roof covering damage, scope of damage, scope of repairs, and repairability of roof coverings. Ms. Solek also has experience with commercial and residential evaluation of damage to window and door assemblies due to wind, hail, moisture intrusion, and manufacturing and installation defects

Dr. Christopher Eckersley is a biomedical and mechanical engineer at ESi with related expertise in traumatic brain injury (mTBI, concussion, and severe traumatic brain injury), injury analysis, neck injury, and the evaluation of use and non-use of personal safety equipment. His projects span a range of areas, including motor vehicle accidents, slip-and-falls, pediatric injuries, and product liability claims. He also has specialized expertise in blast injury and blast biomechanics, and has analyzed blast injuries in both military and civilian environments.
Prior to joining ESi, Dr. Eckersley earned a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Duke University where he worked in the Injury Biomechanics Laboratory. For his dissertation research, Dr. Eckersley investigated traumatic brain injury in both blunt impact and blast environments. He has also conducted extensive research into areas such as cervical spine injury due to head supported mass, personal protective equipment effectiveness in blunt impact and blast loading environments, and environmental influences on blunt impact head kinematics.
Dr. Eckersley has presented his engineering research at international conferences, and is published in peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Biomechanical Engineering and the Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport.

Mr. Moriarty is a Senior Staff Consultant with the Civil Engineering team. He has more than 8 years of experience in building design including structural analysis, structural drawing and detail production, and risk assessment. This includes new and existing buildings in a range of sectors such as single- and multi-family residential, commercial, industrial, power generation, and hospitality. While Mr. Moriarty specializes in the design and construction of residential wood structures and commercial steel structures, he has also designed masonry, light gauge, and mid-rise concrete buildings. He has extensive experience with drawing production and Building Information Modeling in AutoCAD, Revit, and Tekla Structural Designer. Mr. Moriarty has managed full project life cycles from conceptual design through construction administration.
Prior to his career in structural design, he was a Reliability Engineer in oil refineries and natural gas facilities. In Chicagoland as well as the Arctic Circle in Alaska, he assessed the risk and impact of failing concrete and mastic fireproofing and maintained quality control on large-scale renovations during turnarounds.

Dr. Graham Parkinson is a Senior Staff Consultant in the Polymer, Composite, and Non-metallic Materials Practice at ESi. Dr. Parkinson specializes in conducting failure analysis and materials characterization investigations related to the performance of polymeric materials in plastic products from diverse industries. He provides technical consulting services to clients in the scientific and engineering industry as well as the insurance and litigation spaces. He has led numerous forensic investigations of component failures as well as failure of industrial systems to attribute the root-cause of failure to either material selection, processing, or part design. His expertise includes understanding of different material degradation mechanisms, different failure modes, and structure-property relationship of plastic materials.
In addition to working on polymers, he also applied materials science and engineering principles in investigations of the performance of concrete, glasses, ceramics, and both ferrous and non-ferrous metallic products. Dr. Parkinson's experience in materials science and engineering as well as chemical engineering leads to seamless project execution across multidisciplinary teams when performing complex failure analysis.
Dr. Zeynep Ayla is a chemical engineer with expertise in the areas of catalysis, reaction engineering, and fire and explosion investigation. At ESi, she specializes in fire, explosion, and chemical release investigations, in addition to catalyst performance in industrial systems, dust hazard analysis, industrial chemical process arbitration and patent cases, and consumer product litigation including fuel dispensing systems. With an experimental background, she has strong skills in catalytic synthesis and characterization, kinetic analysis, batch and flow reactor design, gas chromatography, and UV-Vis, FTIR and Raman spectroscopy.
Prior to joining ESi, Dr. Ayla was a graduate student researcher at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Her doctoral dissertation centered around understanding structural, kinetic, and mechanistic differences in metal oxide catalysts with varying reaction rates. She developed skills in catalyst design and characterization, reaction engineering, reactor design, and heat and mass transfer. More specifically, she has designed and built a reactor system for gas-phase epoxidation with hydrogen peroxide, developed kinetic models to understand substrate activation to form active forms of oxygen for oxidation reactions, and optimized time-resolved in-situ spectroscopy to observe active intermediates formed on reactive surfaces.

Dr. Bain is a chemical engineer with over 15 years of experience investigating performance of materials on behalf of government, industrial, and academic clients. His extensive product failure analysis experience covers a wide range of polymeric and non-polymeric materials, including engineering thermoplastics, thermosets, composites, elastomers, gels, textiles, glasses, ceramics, and metallic components. His expertise is aimed at solving complex problems involving performance of materials and determining root-causes of product failure based on a deep understanding of material chemistry, processing, structure, and property relationships and how these interact with design, manufacturing, and extreme service environments. His approach is based on reliable and proven scientific techniques applicable to a wide range of industries including piping, transportation, construction, defense, medical devices, adhesives, electronics, consumer products, and more.
Prior to joining ESi, Dr. Bain worked for seven years at the U.S. Army Research Laboratory as a staff scientist and post-doctoral research engineer. His research on polymer and composite materials for body armor, lightweight vehicle protection, ballistic clay replacement, battlefield wound care, additive manufacturing materials and processes, and high voltage electronics resulted in significant advances to soldier capability. Dr. Bain has published numerous peer-reviewed journal papers and has been invited to present his research at domestic and international scientific meetings.

Estanislao "Tanny" Acedo is a degreed mechanical engineer in ESi's Automotive & Marine practice and brings significant expertise in the design, testing, and failure analysis of light and heavy-duty vehicles. He has worked directly with clients and groups to help develop, implement, and manage specific projects in the areas of vehicle testing, product research, and vehicle verification and validation. Mr. Acedo has extensive experience with hands-on testing. Experienced with fuel system components in Diesel and Gasoline engines, as well as alternative fuel systems (LPG, CNG, hybrid, etc.). Mr. Acedo also has significant experience in project management.
His experience spans the full lifecycle of these vehicles, including research and development, diagnostic and performance analysis, risk assessment, and failure analysis. Prior to joining ESi, Mr. Acedo gained a wealth of experience in the automotive consultancy world, having worked with several companies both domestic and overseas. At ESi, Mr. McGillicuddy is involved in accident investigation and reconstruction of vehicular accidents, vehicle systems analysis, and field documentation using FARO Scanning and electronic data recording devices. He is also experienced in data analysis and vehicle testing.
