Nuclear Waste Watch is Network of Organizations Concerned about High Level Radioactive Waste and Nuclear Power in Canada... Nuclear Waste Watch / Action déchets nucléaires was founded in November 2003, to provide a public-interest response to the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO). The NWMO is controlled by the nuclear industry and was mandated by the federal government under the Nuclear Fuel Waste Act to make a recommendation on the long-term management of high level radioactive waste (irradiated fuel) by November 2005. In 2007, the federal government approved the Nuclear Waste Management Organizations proposed plan, and in 2010 the Nuclear Waste Management Organization officially launched its search for communities willing to be studied as possible burial locations for all of Canada's high level nuclear waste. As of November 2012, 21 communities were under investigation. As of January 2020, two municipalities remain in the NWMO siting process.
