Adela Hawley

Adela is one of the Events Coordinators in the ICON EPN team. Through her freelance practice, Adela Hawley - Collections Management, she offers services in conservation, curation, collections management, and heritage consultancy, with a particular emphasis on digital innovation and improving accessibility in the cultural sector. Adela has contributed to a wide range of heritage projects both in the UK and internationally, working with institutions such as Qatar Museums, Manchester Museum, the Museum of Science and Technology in Serbia, The Box in Plymouth, and ProMare. Her work has included preventive conservation, collections management, exhibition design, and the digitisation of maritime artefacts using 3D scanning technology to enhance public access. Adelheid Hansen - Treasurer

Alexandra Taylor

Alexandra Taylor is a paintings conservator at Stichting Restauratie Atelier Limburg (SRAL). She has worked internationally at the National Galleries of Scotland, Saltmarsh Paintings Conservation, and the Phoebus Foundation. Her interests lie in the treatment of Old Masters and the fundamental aspects of painting analysis and research. A Board Member of Restauratoren Nederland, she is passionate about increasing public awareness and promoting professional outreach in this field. She also serves on IIC committees and edits News in Conservation and The Picture Restorer. Her interests lie in the treatment of Old Masters and the fundamental aspects of paintings analysis, research, and the valorisation of results. Alexandra is a committee member for IIC and secretary for the Icon UK Paintings Group, as well as an assistant editor for "News in Conservation" and the BAPCR's "Picture Restorer". She is passionate about increasing public awareness and promoting professional outreach in this field.

Alice Law

Alice is the 2023-4 Icon Bute Intern in Collections Care and Historic Interiors with the National Trust for Scotland. She holds a degree in History of Art; and trained in Object Conservation at Cardiff University, completing an MSc in Conservation Practice in 2022. She has experience volunteering with organisations including the National Trust, the Museum of Welsh Cricket and the National Army Museum and is currently learning about the care of collections in the unique environments of historic buildings.

Alice Tate-Harte

Alice Tate-Harte has been a Fine Art conservator at English Heritage for 14 years and cares for paintings, frames and gilded furniture in historic interiors. Alice Watkins is a Sculpture and Installation Art Conservator at Tate, where she works across Loans, International Programme and Tate St Ives. She holds an MSc and Professional Doctorate (PDRes) in Contemporary Art Conservation from the University of Amsterdam. I'm very excited for the opportunity to join the CCG Committee as Editor. I feel I can offer an eye for detail and organisation in the coordination of papers, abstracts, and events with the committee. I am an emerging preventive conservator and recently completed a year-long Icon internship with the National Trust for Scotland. I am currently working as a freelance conservator and would relish an opportunity to become more involved in Icon and offer my skills to help support the work of the CCG committee. I have previously worked in arts administration and collection management roles, which often involved the coordination of diaries for events and meetings and often required me to communicate with a range of stakeholders across arts organisations. I have experience drafting reports and policies and proof reading documents. I am passionate about preventive conservation and collections care and feel this opportunity will allow me to increase my engagement with professional colleagues in the course of my Editor duties as well as learn from committee colleagues.

Ayaka Ajiki

Ayaka is a conservator from the Archives Conservation Lab at the National Archives of Singapore and holds a BA in Conservation of Cultural Heritage from University of Lincoln, UK. Alongside conservation works, Ayaka also drives efforts curating training for library and archives staff in collection care, conservation consultations and outreach engagement. This is her first experience being part of a committee, and is grateful to be given this opportunity to meet, learn and work alongside others in the BPG community. Outside of conservation, she is a full-time dog mum who also enjoys crocheting and sewing.

Brian Castriota

Brian Castriota is Lecturer in Conservation of Contemporary Art and Media at University College London, Time-Based Media Conservator at the National Galleries Scotland, and Freelance Conservator for Time-Based Media and Contemporary Art at the Irish Museum of Modern Art. He completed graduate-level training in conservation at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University in 2014, and earned a Ph.D. in History of Art from the University of Glasgow in 2019 as part of the Marie Skłowdoska-Curie ITN New Approaches in the Conservation of Contemporary Art (NACCA).

Camella Ramjet

Camella is our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Officer. Camella is currently training at English Heritage as a Preventive Conservator. She completed an MA in Principles of Conservation from the UCL Institute of Archaeology, where she was elected student officer for UCL's disabled students as well as Equality, Diversity and Inclusion representative. Her research focused on exploring decolonial routes to contemporary conservation. Camella also worked as a Collections Manager on a large-scale store move of UCL's Ethnographic Collections.  Prior to her MA, Camella undertook a 1-year traineeship at The British Museum as a Community Partnerships officer. She was involved in delivering workshops, outreach and public events. Additionally, she assisted in the curation of ‘Desire, love, identity: LGBTQ histories' exhibition and gallery trail. She received training from curators and conservators to manage the preventive conservation and audit of the department's handling collection, which includes over 600 objects. Working collaboratively with other teams, she provided objects from the collection to be featured in exhibitions.  After her traineeship Camella continued at The British Museum working with the Africa, Oceania and Americas Department on collection care and access. She also started a project with the aim of digitising and documenting Caribbean collections. Her work involved research to update the biographies of these objects and preventive conservation. Camella has worked in various collection care positions at the Science Museum Group, Natural History Museum and at the Royal Geographic Society with Wiley Digital Archives, where she independently managed the recant and documentation of collections and archives. Carla Flack ACR

Carla Flack is a conservator of Contemporary Art focussing on sculpture and installation art. In 2008 she received an MA from the University of Lincoln (United Kingdom) in the Conservation of Historic Objects. Subsequently she has worked privately and for various institutions in the UK including the Science Museum (London) and Historic Royal Palaces (London). She has worked for the Sculpture and Installation Conservation department at Tate (London) since 2012 where she has worked across all areas but especially for the loans out programme. She is a founding member of the ICON: Modern Materials Network in the UK.

Carlotta Cammelli

Carlotta recently completed her MA in Stained Glass Conservation and Heritage Management at the University of York, for which she was also awarded an Anna Plowden Trust bursary in 2019. Previously to this, she has also achieved an MA in Art Gallery and Museum Studies from the University of Leeds. In February 2021 she became Editorial & Technical Assistant for the online magazine Vidimus, and since May 2021 she has been working as a Graduate Conservator for Recclesia Stained Glass in Manchester.

Carmen Vida

After originally studying Archaeology, I went on to become an Objects conservator and graduated from UCL's MA and MSc in 2013. I have always had a particular interest in decorative surfaces because of their complexity, and because they often involve both organic and inorganic materials and require complex decision making. After graduation I worked, among others, for Cambridge Museums and the National Trust, where I was the Objects and Decorative Surfaces conservator at the then brand new Knole Conservation Studio. I am now Sculpture conservator at the V&A. I am very interested in engagement and training and have worked at UCL in research projects as well as supervising and training MSc students in their practical work. I still lecture there on the conservation of painted and decorative surfaces.

Carola Del Mese

Carola is our Communications Officer and facilitates contact within ICON. She completed a Post Graduate diploma and MA in Conservation of Metals at West Dean College, in 2022. Her undergraduate degree was in 3-Dimentional Glass Craftsmanship and Design. She is currently a Project Conservator based at the Historic England conservation labs in Portsmouth, working collaboratively with MSDS Marine, conserving objects recovered from the Rooswijk shipwreck. Carola's focus is archaeological objects recovered from both terrestrial and marine sites. Carola entered conservation from a career in the creative arts, having trained as a theatrical prop-maker at Glyndebourne Opera House, then working as a freelance prop maker for events, focusing on metalwork, scenic prop making and sculpture.

Catherine Campos

Catherine Campos is a second-year MSc student in Conservation of Contemporary Art and Media at University College London (UCL) and a Gabo Trust Scholarship recipient. Passionate about the complexities of preserving contemporary materials and sculpture, Catherine recently completed a placement at the National Galleries of Scotland in Edinburgh, where they contributed to conservation treatments, research, and preventive care for modern and contemporary artworks. Catherine Campos is an emerging contemporary art conservator who recently completed an MSc in Conservation of Contemporary Art and Media at UCL, where she was awarded the Gabo Trust Scholarship for her commitment to the conservation of modern and contemporary sculpture. She gained experience at the National Galleries of Scotland as a Contemporary Art Conservation Intern, and has previously worked in curatorial, teaching, and collections roles in the Philippines. Her dissertation focused on the degradation and conservation of cigarettes in contemporary sculpture, with further writing on the subject forthcoming.

Charles Morse

Charles has two degrees in archaeology, both from UCL, and a Masters in Human Rights from the University of London. He worked for 11 years as an archaeologist in the UK and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), and since 2012 has worked in the NGO sector on inclusive education and heritage programmes in the MENA region. Since 2018, Charles has also worked with the British Council's Cultural Protection Fund to assess projects aiming to protect and conserve tangible and intangible cultural heritage in MENA countries. He has strong interests in the use of cultural heritage for inclusive and ethical development, and the vital role of conservation within this process.

Christine Sitwell ACR

Christine trained as a paintings conservator at Winterthur Museum, University of Delaware before embarking on an internship at the Tate Gallery, London. She joined the National Trust in 1990 as a paintings conservation advisor responsible for managing and organising the conservation of the Trusts' collection of paintings and also advising on historic interiors with regard to paint analysis and conservation of painted surfaces.

Claire Fry ACR

Claire is an accredited preventive conservator. After her training at Cardiff University, Claire worked for the National Trust and then English Heritage. Since setting up Spencer & Fry in 2015 Claire has worked with a range of museums, heritage organisations and historic houses in all aspects of preventive conservation, however her particular areas of interest are emergency planning and the management of film crews in historic locations. Claire is an assessor and mentor for the Institute of Conservation accreditation scheme and since 2016 has served on the Fabric Advisory Committee for Leicester Cathedral.

Claire Woodhead

I work for the Hampshire Cultural Trust in Winchester, which has been home since 2007. This is my second stint on the Archaeology Group Committee, having previously served from 2008-2016. In a former life I gained a BA (Hons) in ceramics and worked as a studio potter and a violin teacher in Devon, before completing the MA Conservation of Historic Objects at the University of Lincoln in 2007. I became accredited in 2011 and have since completed an MA in Regional and Local History and Archaeology, graduating with distinction in 2015. My interests are archaeological, ceramic and natural science conservation and I enjoy combining all these and more through work.

Clara Malinka

Clara Malinka is a freelance conservator working in London, UK. She graduated with her MA in Conservation Studies (Books and Library Materials) from West Dean College in 2023. She has worked in local museums, the private sector, and as a freelance conservator prior to founding Spectrum Heritage, where she was Director from 2016 until joining HES in 2020. Clare Finn

Clare trained first at Gateshead Technical College's course on the Conservation of Easel Paintings, now run by Northumbria University before then studying in Zurich, Stuttgart and Rome. She set up and ran the conservation departments at Coventry Museums. Coming to London, she set up her own conservation business and was a technical conservation consultant to Sotheby's Impressionist department for 30 years. Her doctorate is from the Royal College of Art, and it is on Picasso's Decorative Metalwork. She has undertaken post-graduate research into Picasso's bronze casting during WWII and is a member of the Picasso Bronze Project along with staff at the Musée National Picasso, Paris and the Art Institute of Chicago.

David Orr ACR is Castle and Collections Manager at Hillsborough Castle for Historic Royal Palaces. As an accredited conservator he has overseen the collections at the castle for over 8 years with building up experience that ranges from collections management, salvage to supervising on site treatment projects. David graduated from West Dean College, setting up a business in metalwork conservation in Northern Ireland, he gained his experience from restoring, maintaining, and operating steam locomotives from a young age. David is a keen advocate for conservation, being engaged and challenged on completing projects that will help to protect collections but also highlight conservation as a discipline.

Davina Thompson

Davina is the EPN Secretary and is currently the Conservation and Collections Care Officer at Raby Castle, County Durham. Davina graduated from Durham University with a MA Conservation of Archaeological and Museum Objects in 2023. Prior to entering the field of conservation, Davina served in multiple roles across senior leadership teams in secondary schools whilst teaching Classics and English to students from Year 7 to A-Level. Davina is particularly interested in the balance between preservation and use of collections as well as the conservation of cellulosic, protein-based and modern synthetic polymers.

Deborah Cane

Deborah has gained conservation experience from working at National Museums Scotland, National Museums Liverpool, Birmingham Museums Trust and now at Tate. She has a wide breadth of experience of collections and material types, with a keen interest in modern materials and their use and constructs with contemporary art. She currently manages the Sculpture and Installations Conservation team where her focus is on the Hepworth studio, garden and summer house, managing hazardous materials within collections and kinetic works.

Diana Davis

Diana (McCormack) Davis is an accredited large objects conservator. She trained at Durham University after a career in archaeology, and subsequently worked for English Heritage, the Science Museum, National Museums Scotland, the Antarctic Heritage Trust (NZ) and National Museum of the Royal Navy. She is currently Head of Conservation for the Natural History Museum, leading the team that is responsible for the conservation and care of all the museum's collections. Diana has also been chair of PSD since December 2022.

Dr. Athanasios Velios

Athanasios Velios is Reader in Documentation at the University of the Arts London, working on conservation documentation. He trained as a conservator in Greece (Technological Educational Institute of Athens) and completed his PhD in London (Royal College of Arts, 2002) on computer applications to conservation. He worked on the St. Catherine's Monastery condition survey project, designing the project databases and documentation forms, and he developed the framework for the Language of Bindings Thesaurus. He was the webmaster for the International Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (2008-2017), where he redeveloped the Institute's website. He established the Documentation Network of the Institute of Conservation (Icon) in the UK. He worked as Data Architect for the Oxford Linked Open Data pilot (OXLOD, 2018). He has been contributing to the CIDOC-CRM SIG since 2014 and, alongside Kristen St. John, he co-led the Linked Conservation Data project: an AHRC-funded project to enable integration of conservation records.

Dr. Helen Wilson (MChem) ACR is a heritage scientist/preventive conservator at The National Archives and secretary for the Icon Heritage Science Group, with a PhD in heritage science from the University of Manchester and The British Museum (AHRC/EPSRC Science and Heritage Programme). Recent projects include assessing the risk of climate change to The National Archives' collection, creation of an environmental sustainability action plan for the Collection Care Department and research into more sustainable collection care practices.

Dr. Pip Laurenson ACR

Dr. Pip Laurenson ACR is a Professor of Conservation and Director of the MSc in the Conservation of Contemporary Art and Media, at UCL East. Pip has 30 years of experience in the conservation of contemporary art, establishing and leading Tate's pioneering Time-based Media Conservation section from 1996 until 2010 before going on to be Head of Collection Care Research from 2010 to 2022. Pip is committed to interdisciplinary research that serves and responds to the challenges facing the conservation of contemporary collections in the 21st Century. With Jill Sterrett, Pip instigated Matters in Media Art a collaborative project between Tate, SFMOMA and MoMA with the New Art Trust in 2005. From 2018-2022 she led the Mellon Foundation funded project Reshaping the Collectible: When Artworks Live in the Museum. She is also a member of the Steering Committee for INCCA, the International Network for the Conservation of Contemporary Art.

Francesca Whymark

Francesca Whymark ACR is an accredited book conservator and works at the British Library in London. She has a BA in History of Art & Architecture and Italian from Trinity College Dublin (2006) and studied Book Conservation at Camberwell College of Arts, gaining a Foundation Degree (2010) and Masters (2011), before joining the British Library in 2011. She has a particular interest in book conservation terminology and documentation. After a number of years as chair of the Group, I am sharing the communications role, mainly dealing with the website. I am also involved with the update to First Aid for Finds. In March 2019, I retired from the Museum of London (now London Museum) from the post of conservation manager of archaeology, objects and paper. I started at the Museum in 1980 as an archaeological conservator conserving finds from the numerous excavations, many of them waterlogged sites. I led the archaeological conservation team until 2001 and then took on the wider management role. My areas of interest included involvement of volunteers in conservation, archaeological archive standards and display case materials. I am a Fellow of IIC and before retirement I was an assessor for PACR and an Honorary Research Fellow, University College London. Through these roles and my years at the Museum, I feel privileged to have been involved in the training of archaeological conservators from many conservation programmes.

James Harvie - Chairman

James is the group chair for ICON EPN. He is currently completing his PhD at the Royal Danish Academy: institute for Conservation, researching the treatment of waterlogged organic archaeological material. He has previously interned at the Western Australian Shipwreck Museum, primarily working with maritime archaeological objects and was a Western Heritage Conservation and Heritage Science Intern at the Mary Rose. His work at the Mary Rose included helping to conserve and analyse the Mary Rose using various analysis methods and data sets. James studied at Durham University, completing his masters in the Conservation of Archaeological and Museum Objects in the summer of 2022. His placement year was spent at Bevaringscenter Fyn, Denmark, where he worked on honing his abilities as an object conservator. His undergraduate degree was in Ancient History and Classical Archaeology at the University of Edinburgh where his experiences on excavation first got him interested in the field of conservation. While James has worked with and researched waterlogged wood heavily, on which he has presented and published papers, he enjoys treating a wide variety of archaeological materials and learning about the wide variety of different fields of conservation.

As Head of Digital and then Director of Global Communications at the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), James led major transformation and content programmes that helped to reach new audiences and attract new members, whilst elevating digital competence across the organisation. Jane McCree

Jane McCree is a paintings conservator and joined the Tate Conservation Department as Head of Paintings & Frames Conservation in 2016. She initially studied History of Art & Architecture (BA - UEA) and Art Museum Studies (MA - Courtauld Institute of Art), later obtaining a PGDip in the Conservation of Easel Paintings from the Courtauld Institute of Art. She has held a research placement at MoMA, NYC and internships at the Hamilton Kerr Institute, University of Cambridge and Victoria & Albert Museum. Prior to joining Tate, she was Head of Conservation at the Hugh Lane Gallery, Dublin and lead conservator on major conservation projects for a wide range of national institutions. She has also worked internationally for museums and in private practice conserving a wide range of paintings with diverse issues. She has undertaken structural treatments on large scale paintings and specialises in the conservation of modern and contemporary paintings. At Tate she leads a large team of paintings and frames conservators to deliver Tate's programme of exhibitions & displays, loans, acquisitions, across six sites. She has developed conservation strategy for collection care, champions practice-based research for the department and is a strong advocate for access and engagement with conservation research at Tate and beyond. She has supported a wide range of research projects including multiple treatment based and technical art history research projects, the Getty-Greenwich Lining Canvas Project and NanoRestart. She is currently leading on a research project with a focus on Conserving Contemporary Canvas.

Jane Thompson-Webb ACR

An Accredited Conservator, Jane graduated in Archaeological Conservation from Cardiff University in 1992. After a spell as a self-employed object conservator, including working on geological specimens, she moved into Collection Care. In 2002, she became the conservator on the project to relocate Birmingham's science and industry collection of 40,000 objects ranging from pen nibs to drop hammers. In 2003, she became a Conservator (Preventive) at Birmingham Museum Trust and is now Conservation Team Leader. In this post, she is responsible for collection care across Birmingham's 9 sites. She began a programme of training and advice on collection care for museums in the West Midlands under the Renaissance in the Regions Scheme and training is still one of the more enjoyable parts of the job. The best bit of the job is IPM and Jane is never happier than when she is staring at insects down a microscope.

Jannicke Langfeldt

In 2006 she returned to the UK to become a Senior Textile Conservator at the Victoria and Albert Museum, becoming Head of Textile and Fashion Conservation there in 2015. Karen graduated with a degree in Conservation and Restoration from London Metropolitan University in 2010. From 2007-2010 she gained experience in the profession as a Conservation Intern for the Natural History Museum, London working with the Palaeontology and Zoology departments. In 2010, she was employed as a Project Conservator for Historic Royal Palaces where she contributed to the delivery of several exhibitions including a full refurbishment of Kensington Palace. Since 2012 she has been employed at the British Library working on various projects and has now been appointed as the Collection Care Monitoring Conservator. Leah is a Senior Lecturer and researcher within the University of Lincoln's Department of Conservation (part of the Lincoln School of Humanities and Heritage), with an undergraduate degree in English, and postgraduate training as a conservator. Her PhD research delves into the relationship between conservation and material culture studies, investigating the eighteenth-century tapestry interiors at Doddington Hall, Lincolnshire, as instances of ‘material self-fashioning'; a strategy that used objects to embody the elite masculinity of the Hall's owner, Sir John Hussey Delaval. In her teaching, she takes pleasure in engaging students with topics such as public engagement in conservation, the sociocultural narratives of objects, and research into or practical work with textiles, while also fostering their professional growth through practical experiences such as work placements and other experiential learning opportunities. She currently works as a National Trust Regional Conservator in Wales and Project Conservator for Kedleston Hall Museum (South Asian Collection) Project. A longstanding ambition to work as a specialist conservator in the museum and heritage sector led Nicola to study for a BA(Hons) Conservation of Wood, Stone, and Decorative Surfaces at City and Guilds of London Art School. After initially training in conservation in Italy, I graduated from UCL with an MA in Principles of Conservation in 2019 and an MSc in Conservation for Archaeology and Museums in 2021. I previously worked as a freelance conservator specialising in archaeological materials. I am currently the Senior Metals Conservator for Historic Environment Scotland. In addition to my work in the UK, I also undertake conservation fieldwork internationally, most recently at sites in Egypt, Greece, and the US. Zachary Green, of Jersey City, began working in stained glass in 2001 and soon founded his own studio, the Princeton Stained Glass Company, where he focused on new works and restoration, concentrating on traditional glass painting techniques. In 2019 he became the owner of The Gil Studio, Inc in NYC which currently operates from its Union City, NJ facilities and continues its tradition of excellence in the conservation of historic windows and the design and fabrication of new works.
