Anna Whitelock

Anna Whitelock is a historian, author and broadcaster. She is Professor of the History of Monarchy at City, University of London and Director of the Centre for the Study of Modern Monarchy. Anna is an international media commentator on monarchy, public history and heritage, and the Tudors and Stuarts. She is the Principal Investigator on a major AHRC project: The Visible Crown: Queen Elizabeth II in the Caribbean: 1952-present. Professor Anna Whitelock is the Executive Dean of the School of Communication & Creativity (from 1 st August 2022). Prior to her appointment she was Dean of the School of Arts and Social Sciences on an interim basis. Charles Lees

Charles Lees is Executive Dean and Professor of Policy and Global Affairs in the School of Policy and Global Affairs, City, University of London, UK (2022 - ). Previously, he was Dean (People and Resources) and Professor of Government in the College of Business, Government and Law at Flinders University, Australia (2017-2022), and Head of Department and Professor of Politics in the Department of Politics, Languages, and International Studies at the University of Bath, UK (2011-2017). Charles Lees has research expertise in comparative politics and policy, including party systems, coalition government, environmental politics and policy, and has contributed to debates on the methodology of single-country studies. He has provided research and advice for the Centre for American Progress, Australian Labor Party, the Green Party of Aotearoa New Zealand, the UK House of Lords, and the Scottish Executive, amongst others. He is a Visiting Professorial Fellow at the University of Sussex, and Associate Fellow in the Institute for German and European Studies at the University of Birmingham. He has also held visiting fellowships at the University of California San Diego, the Australian National University, the University of Sydney, the University of Bath, and Cardiff University. Charles Lees has a strong record of program and unit design, teaching innovation and delivery, and PhD supervision, across political science, area studies, and other inter-disciplinary settings. He remains very active in PhD supervision, as well as widening opportunity activities and improving the student experience. Chris Fraser

Professor Chris Hull has been at City for over 30 years and is currently Assistant Vice-President and Head of City Doctoral College. He has spent his academic life at City involved in eyes and vision within the Department of Optometry and Visual Science where he holds a chair in optics of vision. His research largely involves how the eye interacts with the optical image in health and disease and focuses primarily on problems at the front of the eye including corneal disease, corneal and cataract surgery. Chris has also taught widely across the optometry programme and has a track record of PhD supervision and mentorship of colleagues. His previous roles have included head of department, Associate Dean for Research and Enterprise and Deputy Dean. Outside City, Chris is a Fellow of the European Academy of Optometry and Optics and a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers. Beyond work, Chris can be found walking the family's yellow Labrador, playing cricket for Pinner CC and tinkling the ivories!

Dr Anton Cox

Dr Cox studied at Clare College, Cambridge (1990-4), and graduated with a BA(Hons) degree in Mathematics, followed by a Certificate of Advanced Study in Mathematics. After working in Oxford, Stuttgart, and Bielefeld, he joined the Mathematics Department in 1999. He is currently Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education in the School. Dr Cox's research interests lie in representation theory, where he studies representations of algebraic groups and related algebraic objects. Beth completed her PhD in English at Goldsmiths in 2017. Throughout this and since she has developed a keen interest in student skills development and career opportunities both within and outside of higher education. Beth has worked, and continues to occasionally work as a lecturer, a public speaker, a writer, and is a member of the International Network of Comparative Humanities, overseen by Princeton University and the University of Notre Dame. Beth is highly experienced in helping students to increase their skill sets through finding work and extra-curricular experiences related to their studies, as well as running and coordinating skills development programmes and initiatives. Beth's role in the City Doctoral College brings together her experiences as both an academic and a member of university professional services, providing a strong platform upon which to assist our Doctoral Researchers to develop their research and skills interests through the Doctoral Researcher Development Programme.

Dr Lara Silvers was awarded a PhD from the University of Leeds in 2004. After a short time as a temporary lecturer at the University of Leeds she became a postdoctoral researcher at UCSD in California before moving to Ecole Normale Superieure (ENS) in Paris. After working at the ENS she became a postdoctoral researcher in DAMTP at the University of Cambridge before taking up a position as a lecturer in mathematics at City in 2009.

Mark Broom

Professor Mark Broom obtained a BA (Hons) in Mathematics from the University of Oxford in 1989, followed by an MSc in Statistics (1990) and a PhD in Mathematics (1993) at the University of Sheffield. He then held a postdoctoral research position again at Sheffield (1993-5) and a temporary lecturing position at the University of Glasgow (1995-6). He joined the University of Sussex as a Lecturer in 1996, where he worked until the end of 2009, most recently as Reader in Mathematics, and he was the Head of the Department of Mathematics from 2007 to 2009. Mark was appointed as Professor of Mathematics at City University in January 2010. He became Head of the Department of Mathematics in August 2021. Helen joined City's Senior Leadership Team as Chief Operating Officer in February 2022. Helen came back to City after five years at Goldsmiths University of London, where she was Chief Operating Officer and Registrar and Secretary. Before that she worked for six years at the University of Oxford where she was Director of Planning and Resource Allocation, Head of the Council Secretariat and a Fellow of Exeter College. Helen worked previously at City, from 2001-2010. She held a variety of roles including Head of Administration for the School of Allied Health Sciences and Deputy Academic Registrar; she also set up and lead City's Strategy and Planning Unit.
