Adam Humphrey

Job Titles:

Adam is a Manager in the Advisory team based in our London office. A Chartered Accountant, he joined the firm in 2013 after completing an economics degree and specialises in restructuring and turnaround. His practical experience includes Independent Business Reviews (IBRs), Accelerated Mergers and Acquisitions (AMAs), cash flow reviews, options analysis and contingency planning on behalf of lenders and key stakeholders. His work covers a broad range of sectors including construction, care, leisure, retail and hotels. Adam also has experience across a number of corporate finance activities, including financial and commercial due diligence, debt/equity raising and business sale assignments.

Aldo Bortolozzo

Aldo is a Manager in the Advisory team based in our London office. He joined the firm in 2017, having previously worked for a successful business travel specialist in central London as their Financial Controller. He is AAT qualified and a member of The Association of Accounting Technicians. Aldo's work comprises Independent Business Reviews (IBRs) and contingency planning work on behalf of lenders and stakeholders. Other advisory assignments include financial and commercial due diligence work. Initially working at practices in London and Essex, Aldo's background is in auditing, accounts and tax, with particular focus in the travel and tourism sector. Outside of work Aldo enjoys fishing, football and golf.

Andrew Dalton

Andrew is a Partner in the Advisory team based in our London office. He joined the firm in 2004 and as his career path evolved, he joined the growing London Advisory team in 2008. Andrew has completed two successful secondments to high street banks, working with bank customers who were showing signs of distress. As part of his second secondment, Andrew, as lead relationship manager, dealt with a number of high profile customers which are recognised high street names. His practical experience involves a wide range of turnaround and corporate finance assignments, including financial and commercial due diligence, valuation work, Accelerated Mergers and Acquisitions (AMAs), corporate simplifications and Independent Business Reviews (IBRs) on behalf of lenders and key stakeholders.

Andrew Grundy


Andrew Mackenzie

Andrew is a qualified Insolvency Practitioner, a fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and has a degree in Accountancy and Finance. He has a broad range of experience in corporate rescue and recovery, restructuring, personal insolvency, business investigations, review work and funding solutions. Having previously worked for PwC, Baker Tilly and BDO Stoy Hayward, Andrew joined the Leeds office of Begbies Traynor in January 2006. He opened a Hull office for the firm on 1 May 2008 and has more recently opened our offices in Scunthorpe and Grimsby.

Anthony Brennan

Anthony is a Partner in the Advisory team based in our London office, and has joined the firm to spearhead a new debt advisory practice that will assist corporate clients seeking debt funding in the range of £1m to £25m. His focus will be on advising clients on raising private capital for growth, acquisition, succession or refinancing funding projects for lower middle market corporates and owner managed SMEs. With over 25 years experience in the UK and European direct lending and acquisition finance markets, he joined the firm from Cameron Barney LLP. Prior to this, Anthony has held senior roles at Praesidian Capital Europe, Peel Hunt, Bank of America as well as Commerzbank and ABN AMRO Bank. Anthony is a seasoned corporate debt professional with extensive capital markets experience in the UK/Europe. He specialises in direct, leveraged and corporate lending transactions, encompassing all parts of the capital structure with in-depth board level/Non Executive proficiency across multiple industry sectors. As a result, Anthony has an extensive network of contacts within the commercial and investment banks, challenger banks, private debt/capital funds, private capital investors and private equity firms across the UK and Europe.

Ben Fallon

Ben is an Insolvency Manager in the Advisory team based in our Leeds office. He joined the firm in in 2012 and is a chartered accountant who has worked on a number of advisory assignments. Ben has the skill set to assess challenged businesses, undertake advisory focused restructuring assignments including independent business reviews, financial due diligence, pre-lend reviews, cash flow reviews and options analysis. He has worked across a broad range of sectors from construction, football clubs, care homes, IT and agriculture. A notable advisory assignment that Ben has been involved with is a financial due diligence report to support an MBO for a specialist contractor firm who supply and install steel frame systems. In addition, Ben has also been involved with the preparation of an options report, including solvency analysis, strategic advice, charity Trustee management, financial statement model preparation and cash flow monitoring for a group of charitable care homes with historic CQC issues.

Bob Maxwell

Bob is Partner in the Advisory team based in our Leeds office and is a qualified chartered accountant. Prior to joining the firm, Bob was a partner at Deloitte and Kroll and he has 25 years' restructuring and advisory experience. Bob has experience across a broad range of industries including retail, manufacturing, distribution, construction, motor retailing and media. His clients include banks, Asset Based Lenders (ABLs), venture capitalists, pension scheme trustees, corporates and government. He has undertaken two major secondments to assist UK clearing banks, advising them on developing turnaround strategies for their clients in financial difficulty.

David Abbott

David is a Partner in the Advisory team based in our London office. He joined the firm in 2004, originally working in our regional office network. In 2006, he moved to the London office to support the set up of a specialist team focusing on creditor and debtor side assignments in the guise of Independent Business Reviews (IBRs) and debt advisory. David has over 25 years' experience in the accounting profession and, prior to joining the firm, had worked in Top 50 London based partnerships. Hands-on turnaround assignments have also been one of David's main focuses. This has generally included working alongside financial institutions and typically involves stabilisation of cash and creditor position, profit improvement, cash generation, consideration of appropriate restructuring mechanisms, implementation of new systems, assisting in refinancing, valuations and managing Accelerated Mergers and Acquisitions (AMAs). From a creditor side perspective, David has been pivotal in enhancing and delivering our Non-Performing Loan portfolio work out for the banks. This has resulted in over 400+ recoveries in the past 24 months and assisted in releasing significant capital for our clients. As the market place has evolved, He has also been involved in corporate finance activities, such as equity/debt raising, vanilla business sales mandates and financial due diligence reporting.

Emma Jones

Emma is a Director in the Corporate Finance team. She is based in our Manchester office and advises on transactions across the UK. A qualified chartered accountant, she has specialised in corporate finance since 2000 and joined the firm in 2006. Emma has extensive experience in advising clients on acquisitions, disposals and equity fundraising, across a broad range of industries and deal sizes. She has a particular specialism in disposals of owner managed business, carefully guiding the owners through the sale process.

Eric Savill

Eric is a Consultant in the Corporate Solutions team based in the London office. He started work with BTG Advisory in 2016 as a consultant responsible for helping businesses to raise funding. He is an experienced banker having spent his career with Barclays latterly as the National Head of Barclays Business Support for the SME sector. In that role he was responsible for a team of managers across the UK who provided additional support to Barclay's customer suffering financial stress with an objective of achieving a Turnaround and restoring the customer to health. He also gained experience of dealing with Wealth customers and sat on a number of internal Credit committees. Previous roles included an Area Director role for a North London based relationship team and also Head of Recoveries for Barclays Business Banking. In his earlier years he was a successful relationship manager.

Gareth Prince

Gareth is a Partner in the Advisory team based in our Birmingham office and is a chartered accountant. Gareth joined the firm in 2004 having worked previously for Kroll and therefore has many years experience in corporate advisory and restructuring in distressed businesses. The majority of Gareth's career has been spent working closely with the main clearing banks and other financial institutions, undertaking advisory work and independent business reviews, as well as formal insolvency assignments. He has previously been seconded to work in the business support unit of Lloyds Banking Group, where he worked with customers ranging from small SMEs to listed businesses with multi-bank syndicates. Gareth works with businesses across a wide range of sectors, with particular experience in construction, manufacturing, transport & haulage, property, hotels & leisure and professional practices.

Gareth Woodward

Gareth is a Partner in the Forensic Accounting team based in our Manchester office. He joined the firm in 2004 as one of the founders of our forensic accounting service, having previously worked at Binder Hamlyn and Tenon. A chartered accountant, Gareth has specialised in forensic accounting for more than 28 years. After an early background in audit and accountancy and company project work, Gareth has turned to forensic accounting, providing single party reports for claimants and defendants in roughly equal proportions, and many on a joint basis. Gareth has acted in hundreds of disputes ranging across a broad spectrum: as expert witness in litigated cases, as advisor in mediations and in disputes settled without resorting to legal proceedings. He has also carried out expert determinations, on appointment by the President of ICAEW or by the parties themselves. He has given evidence in court on numerous occasions, in matters as diverse as road traffic accidents, divorce settlements, commercial disputes and fraudulent trading.

Gary Lee

Gary is a Partner in the Advisory team based in our Manchester office. He joined the firm in 1995 and is a qualified chartered accounting specialising in restructuring and turnaround. Gary originally trained with Arthur Andersen and, during that time, was involved in some of the major receivership appointments such as Leyland DAF and Ferranti. His recent assignments have involved advisory work with banks, Private Equity houses and Asset Based Lenders (ABLs) in respect of underperforming clients. Gary has specialised in working on advisory and restructuring appointments. The assignments have ranged from an Independent Business Review (IBR) to assess the financial viability of the company to taking the formal appointment and trading the business in the short term, whilst negotiations for a sale of the business and assets were concluded. Gary's recent experience has included debt negotiations with banks, funders and HMRC when exploring outcomes that maximise returns to all stakeholders.

Gary Shankland

Gary is a Partner in the Advisory team based in our London office and has 20 years' restructuring experience, covering a broad number of assignments in both distressed and non-distressed scenarios. Gary also spent an 18 month period on secondment, working in the restructuring department of a major UK bank covering both bilateral and syndicated lending. Gary joined the firm in 2004, having previously worked for Tenon Recovery and Grant Thornton. Following his qualification in 2006, Gary was promoted to Director 2007, and Partner in 2015. Gary specialises in secured lender negotiation, Independent Business Reviews (IBRs), debt restructuring and fundraising across a range of sectors, with particular focus in healthcare, leisure, property, and professional services. He has recently worked on projects including vendor due diligence for private equity clients, the restructuring via an administration and sale of a well known international surveying practice, and a number of complex group reorganisation/rationalisation projects for of private equity investments.

Huw Powell

Huw is a Partner in the Advisory team based in our Cardiff office. He joined the firm in 2016 and is a chartered certified accountant and licensed insolvency practitioner with more than 15 years' experience advising businesses that are experiencing financial difficulties. Huw started his restructuring career by working on the merger of Gerling and NCM, which formed the Atradius business, prior to joining KPMG's Restructuring team. He has engaged extensively in providing advice throughout the business cycle, advising clients in relation to a range of growth, turnaround and workout scenarios. Huw has advised corporates, lenders and other stakeholders, dealing with companies with a turnover range of £1 million up to £500+ million, including privately owned, private equity backed, owner-managed and listed businesses as well as experience of assisting the public and third sectors.

Jonathan Bird

Jonathan is a Manager in the Advisory team based in our Leeds office. A Chartered Accountant, he joined the firm in 2014 and has worked on a wide range of advisory assignments. Jonathan specialises in reviewing historic financial information and financial forecasts for options reviews and the preparation of complex indicative outcome statements, as well as contentious matters encompassing directory duty considerations. Recent assignments Jonathan has undertaken include, submitting evidence by way of witness statement in civil proceedings, reconstruction of financial statements from source data, options review of an international e-marketing service, including security analysis and liaising with key lenders regarding company refinancing requirements. He has experience in handling matters with an element of fraud and undertaking multi-jurisdictional tracing exercises leading to substantial consensual settlements.

Julie Palmer

Julie is a Partner in the Advisory team based in our Bristol office. She has 30 years' experience dealing with restructuring advisory and business rescue work. Previously, Julie ran her own practice which is now incorporated into the firm. Prior to setting up her own practice, Julie qualified with PricewaterhouseCooper and later joined Smith & Williamson. Julie has worked on a number of significant cases, including a recent appointment to oversee a group of car dealerships, which entailed the successful disposal of one site to a national supermarket chain. Julie acts as the firm's principal media spokesperson and features regularly on broadcast and printed media.

Karl Hodson

Karl is a Partner in the Corporate Solutions team. He joined the firm in 2016 and is responsible for helping businesses across the UK raise funding for a variety of purposes such as working capital, expansion and capital equipment. In addition the team provides sales ledger support, helping to collect outstanding business debts. Karl has specialist knowledge of raising finance through invoice and asset based lending, crowdfunding, loan and equity funds and Government schemes. Karl has more than 15 years' experience in providing funding to businesses. He started his career at HSBC and spent eight years at the bank, mainly in Commercial Banking. In 2004, Karl moved to South Yorkshire Investment Fund as an Investment Manager before becoming Investment Director for the Business Loan Fund in 2006. Karl then undertook a project for Capital for Enterprise (Now the British Business Bank) to accredit new lenders to the Enterprise Finance Guarantee scheme. In 2010 he moved to Enterprise Ventures where he worked on both the Finance Yorkshire Fund and the EV SME Loans Fund, providing funding up to £1m to businesses.

Kevin Murphy

Kevin is a Partner in the Advisory team based in our London office. He is a Chartered Accountant with over 25 years of restructuring and advisory experience, Kevin has also developed considerable expertise in advising stakeholders of businesses facing financial challenges. Since 2006, Kevin has advised trustees of defined benefit pension schemes on the strength of employers' covenants and on the negotiation of deficit recovery plans. He also advises companies and partnerships facing difficulty meeting their pension liabilities. Kevin also has extensive expertise in forensic accountancy, including fraud investigation and the recovery of assets, and is currently involved in a number of high-value litigation cases. Kevin acts as Expert Witness. In 2020, Kevin was instructed as Expert by the Financial Reporting Council in connection with its complaint against KPMG in respect of the Silentnight matter.
