Job Titles:

Dr. Philip J. Gannon, founding president of Lansing Community College (LCC), passed away peacefully on June 15, 2021. He was 98 years old. Dr. Gannon dedicated his life and work to uplifting communities through the gift of accessible education. As a graduate student at Michigan State University in the early 1950s, Gannon's research suggested two-year colleges, by educating for essential work in local industries, could do more for individuals and communities than by teaching only for transfer to four-year schools. From this initial spark, a new type of community college was born, one that would educate whole communities, create a stronger workforce and a more informed public. Gannon stewarded and expanded upon this distinct mission of Lansing Community College over his 32 years as president. Dr. Gannon's vision created opportunities for thousands. From an initial class of a few hundred students, LCC has expanded to serve more than 23,000 students across more than 200 academic programs each year. The culture of student success Dr. Gannon established at LCC has been a profound gift to mid-Michigan, and we are proud to honor his lasting and important contributions. The Gannon's desire that this scholarship be available to support any LCC student desiring to have the opportunity to experience the powerful gift of education.
