Dr Adeela Ahmed-Shafi

Job Titles:
  • Senior Lecturer - Education

Eve Tandoi

Job Titles:
  • Lecturer - Education
I teach on the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in the School of Education and my research interests lie in exploring the connections between education policy, philosophy and practice. As an undergraduate I studied philosophy and literature at the University of Warwick and specialised in continental philosophy and performance studies. Then I moved to the University of Cambridge to complete my PGCE in Primary Education. I have taught at primary schools in London and lectured on children's literature at the University of Cambridge and Anglia Ruskin University. My PhD examined the effects that reading metafictional texts can have on children's cognitive development and I am currently involved in a research project that explores representation of evolution in contemporary children's picturebooks. I am particularly fascinated by the way that multimodal children's literature (picturebooks, graphic novels, hybrid novels etc.) works within the classroom and contributes to a more dialogic teaching approach.

Marie Millican

Job Titles:
  • Lecturer - Education
I graduated as an Art and English teacher over thirty years ago and have taught in Primary, Secondary, FE and HE contexts. Most of my work has involved teacher education in the post-16 sector but I am still very much involved in teaching English to those who are new to the UK, including asylum seekers and refugees. After a two year VSO posting as a Teacher Educator in Southern Egypt in the early 90s, I did an MA in ESOL & Educational Change. Working later as a lecturer at the Salalah College of Education in Oman, I have continued to draw on overseas experience to further my understanding of the value of education for sustainable change. I continue to work for VSO as a selector/assessor of volunteers for the International Citizen Scheme (ICS) and aim to apply for another VSO Higher Education posting in the future. I have taught on a variety of psychology and policy modules on the Education Studies' and EDL programmes since 2011 and, as the placement link tutor for the course, I get to visit students in a wide and diverse range of fantastic educational settings throughout the county. Seeing education theory inform such excellent practice has to be one of the best parts of the job.

I'm a qualified Educational Psychologist and have worked in a variety Educational settings including schools and specialist provision. I'm interested in supporting the needs of vulnerable groups. I started my educational career working as a teacher in local primary schools. In 1999 I obtained a place on the Masters in Educational Psychology at Exeter University before moving on to a career in Educational Psychology. My last post was as an Educational Psychologist within Worcestershire with some additional management and supervision functions. As part of that role, I have been involved in partnership work with the local CAMHs team in developing a mental health consultation service for use with staff in Secondary Schools. Psychology has been a passion of mine for many years. I was able to pursue this through studying and then working as an Educational Psychologist for over a decade. Through this work I found that I could make a positive impact on the lives of children, young people and their families. I now enjoy sharing that passion with students on our course through the exploration of how education settings and professionals can make a positive impact on outcomes and how an understanding of psychology can support this.
