Bond was introduced to the game by his brother, Frank Bond Jr., who was the first black lacrosse player recruited by Johns Hopkins in 1969. However, it was Tom Lamonica, his JV coach at Friends School that laid the foundation for his understanding of the game. As a varsity attackman, Bond helped the Quakers earn an MSA "B" Conference Championship over Mt. St. Joseph High School in 1978 under the leadership of head coach Carl Ortman, and offensive coordinator Downey McCarty. It was that year that Bond was convinced by guest lecturer at practice Sheldon Freed to pick up a long pole and switch to defense. During the summer of '78, Bond made the transition to defense while playing in the Heroes Summer League for a team coached by former University of Baltimore coach Joe Hutchins and Dave Cottle. Following his brother to Hopkins, Bond walked on to the Blue Jay squad where he played for freshmen coach Howdy Myers, often considered the father of modern lacrosse. Finally earning a spot on the varsity roster his senior year, Bond was exposed to the fine coaching of Henry Ciccarone, Fred Smith, and Joe Cowan. After graduating from Hopkins in 1982, Bond worked at JHU in the admissions office where he had the opportunity to coach a rec team with his boss and former Hopkins face-off specialist Jerry Schnydman. In 1986, Bond began his teaching career at the St. Paul's School for Boys in Brooklandville, MD. Behind the leadership of head coach Mitch Whitely, offensive coordinator Rick Brocato, and defensive coordinator Jay Bond combined to help the Crusaders to back to back MSA "A" Conference Championships in 1991 and 1992. The un-defeated 1992 team was voted #1 High School team in the country. In 1995, Bond began teaching and coaching in the Howard County Public School System and in 1997 became the head coach at the newly opened River Hill High School. With assistant coaches John Kenworthy and J.J. Pearl, the Hawks made it to the Regional Finals in the 2000 MPSSAA Tournament. Passing the head coaching job to current Hawks head coach Keith Gonsouland, Bond began to explore the girl's game as his daughter picked up the sport. Bond returned to coaching in 2003 as the head coach of the River Hill Girls Lacrosse Team and was named Coach of the Year by the Washington Post in 2004.
