EAST HIGH SCHOOL

East High School was established in 1861 and occupied the top floor of the Bryant School, located at East 9 th and Grand. In 1877, the school was moved to the top floor of the Webster School, located at East 12 th and Lyon. Due to overcrowding, the freshman class was moved back to Bryant. Until 1881, the school remained on these premises, and enrollment continued to increase. In 1891, a new, independent building was built with laboratories, an auditorium, and a cafeteria at East 12 th and Grand. This new building continued to grow in population and had to once again move. In 1911, a new building was built at 13 th and Walker, which still stands today. When the building first opened, the school board was unable to afford new furniture, because of the enormous cost of its construction.
