Abdulrahman Ba Jaman

Abdulrahman obtained his Master of Science (MSc) degree in Environmental and Energy Engineering with distinction from The University of Sheffield in 2020, following the successful completion of his Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Civil Engineering from King Saud University in 2018, where he achieved a 2.1 classification. Demonstrating his expertise and dedication, Abdulrahman collaborated with a consortium of 21 partners at Brunel University London, where he gathered and compiled data on two European buildings. He conducted a life cycle analysis (LCA) to estimate their environmental impacts, using SimaPro software and the Ecoinvent database in accordance with internationally recognised standards. Currently, Abdulrahman is pursuing a PhD focused on the sustainability of buildings. His research endeavours revolve around addressing Scope 3 emissions within the construction sector through the utilisation of hybrid life cycle assessment methodologies. Under the supervision of Dr. Stephen Allen and Dr. Aoife Wiberg, he aims to develop a tailored hybrid LCA method for the UK construction industry. In his leisure time, Abdulrahman enjoys playing football, going to the gym, and engaging in diverse reading.

Abigail Thompson

Abigail graduated from the University of Reading in 2016 with an MChem in Chemistry. She was awarded the faculty prize for best dissertation for her final year project designing and analysing novel bridging ligands for use in molecular electronics. Before university she worked between the UK and South-East Asia as Co-director of an international volunteering company. In her spare time, Abigail volunteers as a medic and search technician with Wiltshire Search and Rescue.

Adam Jackson

Adam graduated with an MEng in Chemical Engineering at the University of Bath in 2011. This included research into oxygen-scavenging hollow fibres with Dr Semali Perera, and an industrial placement with Infineum. His final projects moved into more sustainable territory with the design of a polylactide (PLA) plant and an environmentally-friendly aerosol. Adam's other interests include playing in rock bands, producing experimental music and fencing.

Adam Khan

Adam graduated from Cardiff University in 2020 with an MChem in Chemistry. His interest in greener synthetic methodologies stemmed from his CUROP placement under the supervision of Dr Duncan Browne - an eight-week placement involving in the synthesis and spectroscopic analysis of targeted Knoevenagel products, as part of a novel mechanochemistry study. During his final year project, Adam worked under the supervision of Dr Niklaas Buurma in field of flow automated reaction optimization using in-situ online spectroscopic analysis, which solidified his interest in physical organic chemistry and operando studies. Outside of chemistry, Adam enjoys reading and writing, the outdoors, exploring new foods, exercising and swimming. Outside of his research, he is also expanding his knowledge of mathematics and coding in Python.

Adam Pockett

Before coming to Bath, Adam studied Physics at Aberystwyth University. His main research interests involve renewable energy, specifically in dye-sensitized solar cells. Adam also enjoys many types of sport (normally watching, not playing), and mountain walking.

Aida de Heras

Job Titles:

Aida de Heras is the Communications Coordinator of the Centre. She manages the outward-facing communications channels and public presence of the Centre, and coordinates training opportunities for students during their time at the CDT. After gaining her MSc in Science Communication and Public Engagement at the University of Edinburgh, Aida worked in STEM communications and public relations to promote the research outputs of various learned societies. She then went on to learn more about innovation and project management before joining the University of Bath.

Alec Coles

Alec graduated from Keele University in 2021 with a first-class Master's Degree in Chemistry with an International Year. His undergraduate career included a year studying at Tokyo Metropolitan University, and a final year research project developing fluorescent metal-organic framework (MOF) materials for chemical sensing applications. His Master's research project under Dr Chris Hawes investigated the role of hydrogen-bonding on the structure and stability of MOFs. Outside of academia, Alec is an avid tennis player, book reader and enjoyer of long walks in nature.

Alex Tezcan

After completing his Biomedical Engineering Degree in the "Institut Supérieur d'électronique de Paris" (ISEP, Paris), Alex worked as an apprentice engineer in the Thales Defence and Aerospace Department for three years. Having developed an interest in sustainability, he decided to join Bath to continue his postgraduate studies as a PhD working in renewable energy harvesting and sensing applications. Outside of research, he enjoys playing basketball and electronic music.

Alf Hill

Alf graduated from the University of Bath in 2004 with an MEng in Chemical Engineering and embarked on a six year career in oil refining. In this time he developed expertise in crude oil distillation and biodiesel blending and he undertook a nine month placement designing a gas to liquids pilot plant. His research project at the CDT is biomass gasification using fluidised bed technology. Alf is a keen karate student and holds a second dan black belt. He also enjoys travelling, currys and real ale.

Alison Ryder

Alison graduated from the University of Sussex with an MChem in Chemistry in 2013. Her interest in research developed over two summer placements, first with Professor Geoff Cloke and then in industry at Eli Lilly. Her final year research project with Professor John Spender started with the aim of looking at atom economical routes to 1,4-benzodiazepines but had a slight change of direction. Following graduation, she spent three years working for Infineum UK developing new detergent technologies for engine lubricant applications before deciding to head back to university. Outside of work Alison alternates between running, swimming and cycling but doesn't do triathlons. She shows a casual disregard for recipes in her cooking and is an occasional baker.

Amanda Crowe

Amanda Crowe is the Centre Coordinator of the Centre for Sustainable and Circular Technologies. She assists with the operational aspects of running the Centre, co-ordinating the students' journeys from point of application to graduation. She is also the University of Bath coordinator for the UK Catalysis Hub. Amanda also oversees Professor Matthew Davidson's diary. Whilst obtaining her MA in Politics at the Catholic University of America, Amanda managed the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department. She then lobbied the U.S. Congress on the importance of emerging defence technologies. Amanda re-joined academia in 2021 by taking up her position at the University of Bath.

Andrew Hall

Andrew graduated from Imperial College, London with an MSci in Chemistry in 2014. During his final year he carried out a research project investigating mixed metal oxide nanoparticles for use in the production of methanol from carbon dioxide. Whist at Imperial he also took part in a variety of Outreach activities including teaching Chemistry summer schools. In his spare time Andrew enjoys playing the flute and piano as well as rock climbing and hill walking.

Andrew Kay

Andrew graduated from Strathclyde University in 2022, with a Master's Degree in Chemistry. During his studies, he undertook an industrial placement year abroad, working for Allnex in the Netherlands. For his final year project, Andrew researched new methodology to analyse the interactions between polyamides and double-stranded DNA. Outside of research, Andrew enjoys watching films, going for walks and gaming.

Andrew Rushworth

Andrew graduated in 2012 with a BSc in natural sciences from the University of Bath. His final year project involved chemical vapour deposition to deposit nanoparticulate lead and cadmium sulphides in a polymer matrix and their subsequent characterisation. His interest in sustainability and his excellent experience at Bath meant the CDT was a perfect choice for him. Outside of study he enjoys board games, judo and going to church.

Aneesa Al-Ani

Aneesa graduated with an MChem in 2017. Her thesis discussed the synthesis of a significantly rare spiro [indoline-2,4'-quinoline] system. Through multi-step rearrangements of simple heterocyclic starting materials, to the architecturally complex spirocyclic system. She joined the CSCT to continue with research whilst focusing on her main interest in sustainability. Outside academia she enjoys travelling, hiking, skiing, basically anything that involves the great outdoors.

Anita Plumley

Anita completed her MSci at Imperial College London in 2022, where her Master's research project focused on finding bio-based plasticisers for regenerated cellulose films under the supervision of Professor Tom Welton. In her first year, she completed a summer internship with Notpla, investigating possible filler components for agar films. In her spare time, Anita enjoys sailing (but only if it's sunny!), hiking and baking.

Ben Firth

Ben did his undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of Bath prior to joining the CDT. During this time he interned with a research team investigating the fouling of heat exchangers in oil refineries. Outside academia he enjoys spending time with his wife and kids, watching American Football and Rugby League, and drumming.

Ben Goldmann

Ben graduated from the University of Bath in 2020 with a MSc in Chemistry. During his degree he spent a year on placement, studying the physical properties of various plastics to be used as electrical cable coatings. In the final year of his degree, he studied the ability of chromium-based complexes to catalyze the polymerization of olefins with Dr Randolf Kohn. In his spare time, Ben is a keen basketball player as the captain of the University of Bath's basketball team.

Ben Hodges

Ben graduated from the University of Surrey in 2010 with an MChem (Chemistry). His third year was spent on placement at Holcim in Mons, Belgium working on a method for cement analysis using powder X-ray diffraction. His final year project was undertaken in conjunction with Holcim investigating alternative waste materials for the production of specialist cements. In his spare time he enjoys keeping fit, cooking and socialising.

Ben Jefferey

Ben graduated from the University of Southampton in 2008 with an Msc in Chemistry. His major projects were supramolecular DNA-porphyrin arrays in the pursuit of molecular electronics and bidentate carbene ligands for transition metal catalysts. He has also worked for Sigma Aldrich doing R&D for SAFC Pharma. Ben joined the CDT in 2009 and will be working on biodegradable polymers.

Bethan Charles

Bethan graduated from Durham University in 2013 with an MPhys in Physics; her final year project investigated the efficiencies of photovoltaic devices. After her studies she volunteered as a Maths Teacher in India before moving to London, working as a Consultant in the Energy Industry. In her spare time Bethan competes in ballroom and latin competitions, runs and bakes cakes.

Bill Cunningham

Bill graduated from the University of Bath in 2013 with a MChem degree for drug discovery. He undertook a placement year at BAT where he investigated the effectiveness of different carbon types on the removal of vapour phase smoke toxicants. During his final year at university he worked on developing potential catalysts for [2+2] ketene alkene cycloadditions. In his spare time Bill likes to play sport and is currently attempting to improve his surfing skills.

Bradley Green

Bradley graduated from Loughborough University in 2020, with a Master's Degree in Chemistry. During his studies he undertook an industrial placement year at Lubrizol Additives, working in the Fuels Department. Whilst at Loughborough, during his final year project, Bradley researched dithiolene complexes and their uses in energy harvesting applications, such as in organic solar cells and as water reduction catalysts. Outside of academia, Bradley enjoys many outdoor sports including cycling, sailing and surfing.

Caitlin Taylor

Caitlin graduated from the University of Bristol with an MSci in Chemistry in 2014. Her final project investigated the use of Quantum Dots as glyco nanoprobes. After graduation, she took a year out where she travelled around Oceania, and lived in Berlin to improve her German language skills. During her PhD, she has specialised in advanced oxidation water treatments, specifically photocatalysis. In her spare time, Caitlin enjoys skiing, watching Question Time and the odd board game.

Callum Heron

Callum graduated from the University of Glasgow with MSci Chemistry with European placement in 2014. He then did a placement year at Leiden university in the Netherlands on phosphor materials for LED lighting. His MSci project at Glasgow was on single-molecule magnets. In his spare time Callum enjoys mountain biking, gaming and drinking.

Calum Hand

Calum graduated with a BSc in Medicinal Chemistry from the University of St Andrews in 2016 and a Masters of Research in Green Chemistry from Imperial College London in 2017. As part of his Master's thesis, Calum successfully synthesised novel monomers for organic photovoltaics and investigated a range of compounds using computational methods. After graduating, Calum worked for RIMES - a leading financial data management firm - where he was rapidly promoted from a front line analyst to the account team handling the firm's largest client. Calum decided to return to chemistry to investigate how big data can be used to accelerate sustainably driven research and development. Calum's first MRes project with the CSCT successfully used machine learning algorithms to identify high performing materials from large databases and construct quantitative structure property relationships. In his spare time, Calum enjoys working on his own programming projects and is also studying data analysis and machine learning courses to complement his research interests. Calum also enjoys hanging out with friends after a day in the lab, training in martial arts, and making bad puns whenever the opportunity arises.
