Between 1960 and 2015 the worldwide urban population was never growing less than 2 percent per year. Every year millions of people flock to cities. In 2017, more than 54 percent of the worldwide population is living in urban agglomerations. Especially the urban population in East Asia was growing rapidly in recent years. Without doubt, the world's cities face an urban future for which they must prepare. In more concrete terms, ensuring medical care, drinking water supply and sanitation, clean air, affordable and modern energy supply, wastewater treatment and affordable housing will be scarcely manageable.
