Alex Nelson

With over 25 years of business development experience, Alex has spent his career building relationships and leading teams across a variety of industries, which include biotech, software and professional services. In his role as the Practice Development Director at KBF, Alex is responsible for new client acquisition, building strategic partnerships and enhancing client engagement through educational events and tactical marketing activities. Prior to joining KBF, Alex spent the previous decade as the Managing Director of a regional consulting firm specializing in accounting and finance. Prior to that, he was the Vice President of Sales & Marketing for an emerging growth software company focused on the medical industry. Alex holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business, Marketing from the Eller College of Management at the University of Arizona. He previously spent six years on the Board of Directors at the Friends of Doernbecher Children's Hospital serving as the Board Member Relations Chair and was the Finance Leadership Exchange Chair for the Technology Association of Oregon.

Allen Plass

Allen has rejoined KBF after working as a Managing Director at EY for the past eight years where he served as one of the ASC 740 technical leaders for EY's West region. He has over three decades of professional experience between EY and KBF advising corporate clients on tax matters with a focus on ASC 740. Allen was also part of EY's quality network, was an ASC 740 training instructor and looks forward to contributing to KBF's training initiatives. He has been married to his wife Linda for 26 years and lives in San Clemente along with his three children (one of which is currently attending UCSB). He is an avid baseball fan and loves exploring our National Parks.

Brian Kehoe

Brian is a seasoned professional with more than a decade of public accounting experience specializing in outsourced tax department services for medium to large enterprises. Brian's expertise lies in ASC 740 accounting for income taxes, serving multinational companies across diverse industries including technology, manufacturing, biotech, mining, and restaurant/consumer products. His skill extends beyond tax accounting and compliance, encompassing complex transaction reporting such as initial public offerings, mergers, acquisitions, and business combinations. Brian graduated from Northern Michigan University with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting, with a secondary concentration in Chemistry, and is a Certified Public Accountant in the state of Oregon.

Bruce D. Larsen

Bruce is an Emeritus Partner of Ernst & Young. During his 31 year career at EY, Bruce served U.S.-based multinational corporate taxpayers in a variety of industries. He led the EY tax practices in Irvine, California, San Diego, California and Phoenix, Arizona. He also led the EY West Region Tax Practice for the Technology Communication and Entertainment Industry Group. Bruce's areas of expertise include US corporate income taxation and accounting for income taxes. Bruce has extensive experience in U.S. international tax, tax accounting methods, stock-based compensation matters, the R&D tax credit, state and local tax, and representation before the IRS and state tax authorities. Bruce has served on numerous community and professional boards, including the Arizona Society of CPA's, where he served as Chairman of the Tax Legislation Committee and St. Margaret's Episcopal School, where he serves as Chairman of the Audit Committee. Bruce has published and lectured extensively on corporate tax matters. Bruce joined the KBF team as a Partner in January 2015. Bruce is a graduate of Arizona State University with high honors in accounting and completed the EY Executive MBA program at the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University. Bruce is a licensed CPA in California.

Carole J. Trent

Carole (known as Jodi) joined KBF CPAs in November of 2012, bringing over 20 years of experience in public accounting. She is an active member of the firm's Family Financial Services and Expatriate Tax practices, dividing her time between offices in the Bay Area, Southern California, and Pacific Northwest. The experience she gained from a 5+ year rotation in Europe enhances her ability to relate to her clients and help them navigate through the unknown.

Clark R. Dunn

Clark has managed and performed tax planning, consulting, research and compliance projects for privately and publicly held corporations including large and middle market C corporation and S corporations. He has experience with corporate acquisitions and multi-state tax filings (combined state filings, separate filings, apportionment and allocation issues). Darin Pretti

With several years of public accounting experience, Darin has spent his career providing tax and accounting services to both public and private clients across a diverse range of industries. In his role at KBF, Darin is dedicated to serving clients by assisting with accounting for income tax matters and providing efficiencies to facilitate the tax provision process. Darin's focus on accounting for income taxes and outsourcing of tax compliance and consulting needs is enhanced by substantial experience in federal and state tax compliance and consulting, inbound and outbound tax-related issues, mergers and acquisitions and due diligence. Serving public and emerging growth companies, Darin is committed to delivering exceptional tax accounting services to clients. Darin has spent his entire career with KBF and has contributed to the growth of both the Portland and Seattle offices. While Darin's primary emphasis is in the technology and life science industries, he also has experience with manufacturing, retail, and aerospace companies. Darin works with companies of all sizes from start-up companies to large multinational Fortune 100 companies. Darin holds a Master of Accounting with an emphasis in Taxation from Washington State University in Vancouver, Washington and a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting and Business administration from Chapman University in Orange, California. Gregory A. Fletcher

Greg joined the KBF team as a partner in the Portland office in June 2005 to focus on growing the audit practice in the Pacific Northwest. In addition to serving the mainline full-service audit practice, he heads the firm's GAAP consulting and advisory practice, focusing on both publicly traded and privately held companies by assisting with technical accounting and SEC reporting requirements. Prior to joining KBF, Greg was at several of the Big 4 firms, rising to senior manager. Greg consults on numerous technical accounting areas including purchase accounting assistance, audit assistance projects, SEC reporting, and internal controls and process reviews. Working as a liaison between the Big 4 audit firms and their clients on these technical accounting areas has allowed Greg to develop and maintain a level of technical proficiency uncommon in non-Big 4 firms. Greg has assisted with SEC reporting and general consulting for many companies that were ultimately successful in obtaining effective S-1 registration statements and becoming publicly traded entities. Greg has performed numerous purchase accounting assistance projects for companies ranging in size from $10 million to $800 million. With his strong technology practice background, including software and SaaS clientele, Greg has been able to assist clients in their business practices with best practice insights in the industry.

Ian Pierson

Ian has worked exclusively with KBF, after he graduated in 2007 from California Polytechnic University of Pomona with a B.S in business administration with an emphasis in accounting. Ian has several years of tax accounting experience. His focus is with assisting public and private multinational companies with ASC 740 (Tax Provision) services, tax consulting, and income tax compliance. His ASC 740 experience includes serving the needs of companies across a wide range of industries in specific areas, such as, uncertain tax positions, stock options, purchase accounting, and creating/designing tax provision models for small domestic US companies to large US companies with significant international operations.

Jake Hoesly

Jeff A. Kieckhafer

Jeff, who has almost 30 years of public accounting experience, joined the KBF team in 2005 to lead the Corporate Tax Services practice. Jeff's practice focuses on complete or partial tax department outsourcing for corporations. Services offerings include income tax provision (aka "ASC 740"¸ "FAS 109" and "FIN 48") assistance and review; income tax return preparation and review; federal, state, and international tax planning; and day-to-day consulting. Jeff currently provides full or partial outsourced tax department services to more than 60 public and many more pre-public companies located in Southern California and throughout the West Coast. The companies KBF serve range in size from multi-billion dollar organizations with established internal tax departments to start-up ventures with no internal income tax expertise. Prior to joining the firm, Jeff was a Principal with Ernst & Young LLP in San Diego where he served as the lead tax service coordinator for many of the area's prominent companies, including numerous SEC registrants. Jeff has provided a broad range of tax services to his clients including federal, state, and international tax planning and consultation, and tax return preparation and review. Jeff's primary focus is Accounting for Income Tax (aka "ASC 740"¸ fka "FAS 109"). At Ernst & Young, Jeff served as an area FAS 109 technical leader, was a member of the firm's FAS 109 technical support network, and was a lead instructor for the firm's Accounting for Income Tax and Sarbanes Oxley 404 for Income Tax training programs and seminars.

Jeff's prior experience includes significant roles at Big 4 Accounting firms before joining KBF in 2023, where he continues to work with multinational companies on inbound and outbound transactions from the United States. Jennifer Pan

Jennifer focuses on serving public and private equity owned companies. Jennifer has in-depth experience in both publicly and privately held companies in providing tax accounting (ASC 740). Additionally, Jennifer manages the corporate tax compliance team, handling income tax preparation for both public and private companies. Jennifer works as a liaison between the client and the audit firm on tax accounting matters. Working directly with dynamic corporate clients has allowed Jennifer to maintain and strengthen her technical proficiency in the area of ASC 740. Jennifer assists many companies on a routine basis with their tax accounting issues and has developed a strong focus in this area. Joel Dullum

Joel has spent the majority of his career providing tax and accounting services to both public and private clients across various of industries. While at KBF, Joel has assisted clients with their accounting for income tax needs, which include complex issues surrounding purchase accounting, uncertain tax positions, stock compensation, and international transactions. In addition to ASC 740 assistance, Joel oversees the outsourcing of tax compliance and consulting projects. Prior to joining the KBF team in 2014, Joel was a tax senior manager with KPMG's tax practice in Portland. Joel holds a Master's of Accounting (Taxation emphasis) degree, as well as a Bachelor of Science in Accounting degree, from Brigham Young University. Joel is a Certified Public Accountant and a member of the Oregon Society of Certified Public Accountants.

John Baglien

John joined the KBF team in November 2020 and serves in the firm's audit and advisory practices. In audit, John directs the completion of attest engagements for privately held technology, manufacturing, life science, real estate, and retail companies. In the firm's advisory practice, John assists both publicly traded and privately held companies with technical accounting, internal controls, and SEC reporting requirements. In addition to his client facing responsibilities, John oversees the creation, development, and delivery of the firm's audit team training curriculum. John has a background in both public accounting and industry. He started his career at KPMG in Portland, where he served publicly traded technology and manufacturing companies for six years, as well as non-public companies primarily in the healthcare space. In industry, his assistant controller and controller responsibilities included leading his teams in the recording and reporting of financial results as well as coordinating the external financial statement audits. In these roles, John completed the implementations of ASC 606 and 842 among other technical accounting projects. He has extensive experience in SOX compliance and technical areas including accounting for income taxes, information technology, share-based payments, and revenue. John spends his time away from work volunteering with 4H/FFA, serving as the treasurer for a not-for-profit organization, developing his Suffolk sheep seedstock operations, and spending time with friends and family.

Prior to joining the KBF team, Mark was an International Tax Director at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP in Seattle, WA. At PwC, Mark worked with some of PwC's largest public and private companies International and Domestic tax planning, ASC 740 consulting and audit, tax compliance, and business advisory. Mark was also actively involved in PwC's internal training program teaching classes throughout the country on topics including ASC 740, business combination accounting, international tax, mergers and acquisitions, and assorted corporate, partnership, and individual topics. Mark currently provides high-quality, outsourced tax department services to public and private clients on the West Coast. Mark also serves as KBF's International Tax resource, addressing tax technical issues, international topics unique to ASC 740, and reviewing various international tax forms and filings. Mark graduated from the University of Montana with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with an emphasis in Accounting and Finance. Mark obtained a Masters of Accountancy from the University of Montana and a Masters of Tax from Golden Gate University.

Mimi joined the Portland office of KBF as the Director of Employee Benefit Plan Services in January 2010. Prior to joining KBF, Mimi was a director with KPMG LLP, managing the Portland office Employee Benefit Plan practice serving clients in a variety of industries located in Oregon, Washington and Idaho. Mimi has over 25 years of experience with employee benefit plan accounting, auditing and compliance issues. She has worked with a diverse group of employee benefit plans including 401(k), 403(b), money purchase, defined benefit and health and welfare plans, as well as the Form 11-k filing requirements with the SEC. As the Director of KBF's Employee Benefit Plan practice, Mimi is responsible for overseeing and designing our audit methodology and procedures and providing our employee benefit plan training. Mimi continually attends local and national training, including the AICPA National Employee Benefit Plan Conference, to stay current with IRS, ERISA and DOL regulations. Prior to moving to Portland, Mimi served as a trust officer for the Trust Company of Oklahoma, the largest privately owned trust company in the state of Oklahoma. Her responsibilities included plan design and administration, resolution of compliance and operational issues, and annual compliance testing and reporting to the Internal Revenue Service and Department of Labor.

Monique M. Bertram

Monique joined the KBF team as a Partner in 2012 after spending fifteen years in the corporate tax practices of PwC and KPMG. Monique has spent a large portion of her career focused in the area of accounting for income taxes (ASC 740). In addition to this, she consults on complex tax matters, manages income tax preparation, and assists clients with federal and state tax authority examinations and appeals. Her clients have included publicly-traded Fortune 500 companies and privately-held middle market corporations. Industry sectors of note include retail & consumer products, manufacturing, technology and biotech. Monique was born and raised in Montana. She graduated from Montana State University in 1992 with a Bachelor of Science degree with an emphasis in Accounting. When Monique isn't working, she can usually be found at a sporting event, cheering on one of her three active boys.

Pamela S. Talbot

Peter K. Buss

Peter focuses on serving public companies, private equity owned and venture-backed entities. Peter has built a niche in providing ASC 740 and purchase accounting consulting services. Additionally, Peter oversees the corporate tax compliance team, handling income tax preparation for both public and private companies. Peter serves as the outsourced tax department for both public and large private companies, handling all tax-related matters for these companies. In many instances, Peter works as a liaison between the client and the audit firm on tax accounting matters. Working directly with dynamic corporate clients has allowed Peter to maintain and strengthen his technical proficiency in the area of ASC 740. With the heightened independence requirements required by the SEC and PCAOB, Peter has filled a necessary void for many public companies. Rob joined the KBF team as a senior manager in the Portland office in April 2020 as a part of the growing audit and advisory practice. Rob has a deep background in public accounting having served both public and non-public clients across a variety of industries, including technology, manufacturing, and forest products. Prior to joining KBF, Rob started his career at KPMG Portland where he established himself as a technical resource and leader, rising to senior manager. He primarily served publicly traded technology and manufacturing companies, as well as non-public companies ranging in size from pre-revenue to annual sales in excess of $1 billion. He has extensive experience in dealing with SEC reporting, SOX compliance, and transactions including acquisitions, initial public offerings, and spin-offs. In his role at KBF, in addition to leading audit teams, Rob assists public and non-public companies with technical accounting and financial reporting matters. Rob has assisted with SEC reporting and general consulting for clients in technical areas including business combinations, share-based payments, debt issuances, and revenue recognition. Shane Orr

Shane, prior to joining the KBF team in 2016, was the Tax Office Managing Partner of BDO in San Diego. He has several years of accounting experience providing tax compliance and consulting services. Shane's experience is broad and covers a range of tax services to U.S. companies in full-scale consulting, tax provision assistance, co-sourcing, and outsourcing engagements. He has worked with companies on tax compliance and planning, R&D credits, tax attribute limitation and reductions, tax accounting methods, intellectual property migration, M&A, and internal controls over tax. His tax-provision experience includes extensive work in the specific areas of purchase accounting, stock options, uncertainty in income tax accounting, and IFRS. Shane has also worked with many companies whose operations span the globe and has effectively coordinated worldwide services for those clients. Tad Gebeyehu

Tad serves clients in various industries, focusing on multi-state sales and use tax issues. He provides guidance on quantification of multi-state sales tax exposure and risk mitigation strategies for due diligence purposes, to businesses going through Mergers and Acquisitions. On a day-to-day basis, he manages sales tax nexus study, taxability review, exposure analysis, voluntary disclosures, and sales tax controversy. Tad has a strong passion to understand the services that his clients provide, and that helped him win sales tax controversies. For businesses located overseas and entering the US market, Tad provides guidance on the US sales tax landscape and helps them to be compliant with applicable state and local sales tax laws. Prior to joining the KBF team, Tad had been with mid-size and Big 4 Accounting firms and served the mid-market and Fortune 100 companies since 2008.

Todd D. Nakamoto

Todd has over 20 years of public accounting experience. Prior to joining the KBF team as a partner, Todd was a Tax Director with a Big 4 firm in Orange County, where he served both SEC and private companies in various industries. His practice focuses on ASC 740, Accounting for Income Taxes. Services include income tax provision review and preparation, application and documentation of Accounting for Uncertainty in Income Taxes ("FIN 48"), income tax consulting and income tax return preparation. Todd started his career in 1993 with BDO Seidman before joining Deloitte Tax LLP in 1996. He has experience with both closely held companies as well as multinational billion-dollar SEC registrants. He has implemented and identified a broad array of tax consulting projects for his clients including accounting methods, R&D credits, international and multi-state issues. At Deloitte, Todd devoted a significant amount of his time in the area of Accounting for Income Taxes. Todd prides himself in developing people and working together as a team with both his clients and colleagues. He has instructed at both the national, regional and local levels including topics related to Accounting for Income Taxes. He is focused on best practices to be effective and to provide timely services in the often fast-paced world of providing financial results. Todd holds a Master of Science in Taxation degree from Golden Gate University and a Bachelor of Arts from the School of Business of California State University, Fullerton. He became a Certified Public Accountant in January 1996. Todd resides in Aliso Viejo with his wife, Susan, and son, Lucas.
