I grew up in rural Northern Illinois, where my father was a cement truck driver and my mother still runs a neighborhood restaurant and bar. My parents always emphasized the power of education despite never having attended college themselves. I graduated from Creighton University's honors program with a degree in history; I was active in theatre and studied in Vienna. The opportunity to attend HMS transformed my life. At Harvard Medical School, I witnessed the wonder that academic medicine could be and met my best friend and my partner in life and medicine - Eileen.
After our training and early academic appointments in San Francisco and Philadelphia, we returned to HMS in 2000. My practice at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear (MEE) centers on the surgical, reconstructive, and longitudinal care of patients with advanced head and neck cancer; my research and academic writings explore multiple aspects of patient care, caregiver needs, and surgical innovation. I direct the HMS student experience at MEE, created and co-direct our head and neck cancer fellowship and serve as Vice-Chair of Academic Affairs for my Department. I feel grateful every day to make a positive difference in people's lives as a caregiver, educator and mentor, and to have the benefit of learning so much from those around me.
I love family time, theatre, movies and music - and any related trivia questions. I enjoy the wonder, heartbreak and elation all sports bring - as seen in my years of Little League coaching and Chicago/Boston fandom. But most of all, I love seeing the joy people exhibit when they engage in something special and from the heart. I am so fortunate to have this opportunity to learn, live and love Lev.

I have research interests in the intersection of identity, reform, and literature in the context of 19th and 20th century South Asia. Originally from Pittsburgh, PA, I completed my undergraduate degree in Political Science at McGill University, and I hold a Master of Theological Studies from Harvard Divinity School. I am a doctoral candidate with the Committee on the Study of Religion at Harvard. I have worked for two think tanks, was a Teach for America corps member, and taught in a public school setting for five years. Kenneth Alyass is a Ph.D. student in history at Harvard University where he studies race, class, and crime in American cities during the late twentieth-century. His proposed dissertation project is provisionally titled "From the Motor City to the Murder City: Detroit in the Age of Mass Incarceration." It examines how transformations in racial capitalism and the emergence of neoliberalism and the modern carceral state shaped urban governance between 1970 and 2000. Kenneth holds a B.A. in History from Wayne State University in the heart of Detroit, and his previous work focused on the intersection between urban redevelopment and policing. He has presented at multiple conferences such as the American Historical Association, Midwestern History Conference, and the Urban History Association. He is also published in the Michigan Journal of History. My name is Mona Dai and I'm a PhD candidate in Environmental Science & Engineering at Harvard SEAS. I use data science to look at historical patterns of environmental contamination and sociodemographic factors in public water systems in the United States, bringing together my engineering and public health backgrounds. In the past, I've also worked at a civil engineering firm and completed a research fellowship at the US EPA. Her research focuses primarily on the criminal justice system, with a particular interest in community corrections (probation/parole), incarceration, and spatial inequality across rural and urban areas. Nicolette is originally from Milwaukee, WI, and, prior to graduate school, she earned a BA in sociology and statistics at the University of Notre Dame.
