Supporting nonprofits has always been important to Jon and he has a long history providing donated and discounted services, as well as founding and serving on the board of nonprofit organizations. Jon currently is a member of the San Francisco/Bay Area Little Kids Rock Board and is a co-organizer and speaker curator for TEDxSantaCruz. Previously, Jon co-founded the Popular Noise Foundation and the Bay Area Streaming Media Organization (BASMO), spent a number of years as Chair of the Parent Committee at Simcha Pre-School, and has donated services to The Santa Cruz Toddler Center, More Than Just Commerce, Camphill Sventlana USA Foundation, and has provided free services as the delegated manager for a number of .CA.US domains since the early '90s. Also in the early 1990s, he co-founded the "scruz-sysops" - an organization of some of the first free public computer systems connected to the Internet via UUCP.
Luini is a founding member of the Bay Area Streaming Media Organization (BASMO). While the group's first meeting (in February) included a champagne toast, Luini says that its next, in April, is likely to feature a more educational agenda. For more information, email: info@basmo.
Chime founder Jon R. Luini has been in the trenches exploring and helping define the digital world since its birth over 30 years ago. In the 1990s he founded three companies that early on demonstrated the potential of music and entertainment online: the first online music destination site (IUMA, 1993), the first online rock-n-roll magazine (Addicted To Noise, 1994), and the first webcasting company (MediaCast, 1995).
Chime founder Jon Luini was identified as one of the "50 for the Future" ("the most influential people to watch in cyberspace") by Newsweek (Feb 27 1995), named in the "Top 100 Multimedia Producers" by AV Video and Multimedia Producer magazine (Nov. 1996) and has been featured in many other publications over the years.

Lovester Law, vice president of marketing for Bill Graham Presents, agrees the technology has enlivened the job of providing entertainment. The concert-promotion firm joined forces with Apple to produce an Internet broadcast of San Francisco's New Year's Eve party.
"I think this is a perfect example of technology and entertainment coming together in a way that people can touch, feel, and enjoy," he says. "What makes this so special is that we are taking an entertainment experience and sharing it globally."
Martin Belk, partner/sales and marketing director for SenseNet, the New York Web organization responsible for the netcast, says it was also the largest such event to date. "RealAudio confirmed that 2,472 users came in at the beginning of the broadcast and were able to hear it start to finish," he says. "We had some 300,000 hits between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on the fourth [of January]."
The reason for the number of hits can be attributed to the wider availability of the technology and the sheer desire to check out the content of the broadcast. "I think it was a combination of both," Belk says. "The comments we received ranged from [those of] techheads who really wanted to see the concert to [those of] people who were signing in, 'We love you, Debbie.' So it was mix of both scenarios--demonstrating the technology and having some fun also."
"We have a population that is just saturated with the same type of presentation," Law agrees. "What technology and entertainment are doing is fresh, making it novel again. I think it gives people a lift."

Sheila Schat is a partner of Chime Interactive, managing Chime Nonprofit Communications. Sheila brings a keen sense of storytelling and communications strategy to all aspects of her work. Prior to joining Chime Interactive, Schat worked for ten years for Santa Cruz Community Credit Union, a leading community development credit union, where she developed collaborative and innovative asset building programs for underserved communities and a triple bottom line organizational commitment with effective measurement tools. She also worked for ten years as a Program Manager for the Life Balance Institute in Marin County, CA. Sheila's work for many organizations has resulted in nearly $8 million in grant awards.
Schat is a skilled communicator, persuasive writer, strategic thinker and committed to positive social change. Her areas of expertise include family financial security, asset building, community economic development, credit unions, community development credit unions, community development financial institutions, community economic development, microfinance/lending, financial education, earned income tax credit programs, arts and music, and human services.
Schat has a Masters Degree in Social Science from San Francisco State University a BA from The American University in Washington, DC in International Studies and Economics. She is a dual national with the Netherlands and has toured worldwide as professional musician. She lives with her family in Santa Cruz County.
