Shawn Spearman

Job Titles:
  • NIC / Medical / Mental Health, Secondary Education & Deafblind Endorsements
As a 12-year-old boy, Shawn first learned sign language when his grandfather, who was becoming late deafened, decided to take a sign language class. Shawn's grandfather never did anything small, so the two went on a vacation to a deaf camp in Tennessee where they spent a week learning sign language, Deaf culture and meeting Deaf people. He passed before Shawn could do anything with his sign language, but that was his start. Years later, Shawn attended a church that had a Deaf ministry where they took him in and helped him grow. While interpreting services for his newfound friends in the church setting, Shawn realized that he wanted to do this professionally. He started his formal education at Washtenaw Community College and earned his first certification. Later, he continued his education at the University of Northern Colorado and got his national certification. It was during this time that he met his beautiful wife, Jessica. They have two amazing children. Shawn has now been interpreting since 2001 - mostly in religious, educational, medical, community and mental health settings. When he is not interpreting, he is probably coaching baseball, running a boy scout meeting or tinkering in his garage workshop.
