Europe has gone a long way through hostility and war to attain the understanding that the only way to build and secure freedom and prosperity is mutual respect, cooperation and solidarity. The hopes and promises of those laying ground for the European project more than half a century ago have materialized into an unprecedented period of peace and welfare. The concept has proven its high quality and puts Europe at the forefront of political civilization in a globalizing world... In the recent past various challenges, either of internal or external origin, have shaken the stability of the European Union. At the same time many citizens have got used to the high quality of life and do not appreciate adequately the relevance of European cooperation for achieving it.
